Up to 1960, children in need of neurosurgical treatment in France were treated either in neurosurgical departments where anesthetists, nurses and neurosurgeons had no specialized training in pediatrics or in departments of pediatric surgery in which the specific aspect of neurosurgery was ignored. Clearly a mutation was needed before any progress could be made: the development of pediatric neurosurgery services. This essay tells the story of the creation of the first pediatric neurosurgery service in France, of the difficulties encountered and of the strategies applied to overcome them. It also recalls the discussions about what size such a service should be and whether it should be located in a general hospital or in a pediatric hospital. During the second half of the twentieth century, progress in neurosurgery, and more specifically in pediatric neurosurgery, has been tremendous. The contribution of the pediatric neurosurgery service at Les Enfants Malades in Paris is briefly summarized.
The development of pediatric neurosurgery in the United Kingdom, as experienced by one recently trained neurosurgeon in the late 1940s and the 1950s, is described.

Difficulties in social interaction are a central feature of Asperger syndrome. Effective social interaction involves the ability to solve interpersonal problems as and when they occur. Here we examined social problem-solving in a group of adults with Asperger syndrome and control group matched for age, gender and IQ. We also assessed autobiographical memory, on a cueing task and during social problem-solving, and examined the relationship between access to specific past experiences and social problem-solving ability. Results demonstrated a social problem-solving impairment in the Asperger group. Their solutions were less detailed, less effective and less extended in time. Autobiographical memory performance was also impaired with significantly longer latencies to retrieve specific memories and fewer specific memories retrieved in comparison to controls.
In this essay, I analyze two memoirs--Rafael Campo's The Poetry of Healing: A Doctor's Education in Empathy, Identity, and Desire and Abraham Verghese's My Own Country: A Doctor's Story of a Town and Its People in the Age of AIDS--which describe the effects of treating HIV/AIDS on each doctor's identity, on his desire for community and belonging, and on his identification and/or disidentification with the medical profession in the United States. My readings of Campo and Verghese revolve around three key terms provided by Campo's subtitle: identity, empathy, and desire. I shift the order of these terms in Campo's subtitle because I want to read identity, empathy, and desire in Campo and Verghese through and along with the theoretical "pragmatics" of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari.
The practice and study of clinical neuropsychology is considered an empirical enterprise. However, such an approach may result in missing the more humanistic or phenomenological side of the experience of brain dysfunction. This addresses a personal journey rather than a professional and scientific one. In doing so, the limits of the discipline and the suffering and value of the experience of the illness are presented.
