Three dogs reared on a dairy farm with a high incidence for Brucella abortus were serologically positive for B. abortus and no other Brucella spp. The identity of the organism was confirmed to be B. abortus by AMOS (abortus melitensis ovis suis)-polymerase chain reaction with specific primers for B. canis. One hundred percent homology of the canine isolate and the bovine pathogen isolated from the farm was demonstrated. The only possible source of infection was infected cattle on the same farm. It is suggested that dogs be routinely included in brucellosis surveillance and eradication programs.

To support the results of typing the amplicon of the spacer site 5S-23S of pRNA by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) assay, the isolates from the ticks I. trianguliceps and I. pavlovskyi underwent sequenation of rrf (5S)-rrl (23S) spacer to make a comparative analysis of derived nucleotide sequences with the DDBJ/EMBL/ GenBank databases. For this purpose, the authors used six isolates (three imago and three nymphal) from I. trianguliceps and three isolates from adult hungry I. pavlovskyi females from the Borrelia museum of the Laboratory of Infection Transmitters, N. F. Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. In the natural foci of the Perm Region, in the tick I. trianguliceps the same genetic variants of B. afzelii VS461 and B. garinii NT29 was found to occur as in I. persulcatus and small mammals, the reservoir Borrelia hosts. Borreliae previously detected in the tick I. pavlovskyi belong to B. garinii 20047.

In a community survey of 19,410 people for 12 months in southeastern China (Fujian Province), the overall annual incidence rate of diarrhoea was 729.9 episodes/1,000 population. The incidence varied with different age groups; children aged under five years had the highest rate, 2.25 episodes per child per year. A bacterial pathogen was isolated from 883 cases (44.03%), and 147 (14.76%) strains from 996 healthy controls. Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, enteropathogenic E. coli, and Shigella species were the most frequently isolated bacterial pathogens. Isolation was highest during the hot summer months. The investigation showed that the diarrhoea incidence was related to the status of economy, education, healthy, hygiene, food, and water.
It was found that Citrobacter freundii SLJ10 strain was an etiological factor of swine diarrhoea in North Poland. This strain harboured a plasmid aggregate consisting of two plasmids-pEM4 responsible for virulence and pEM6 for selective advantage of the strain, determining resistance to tetracycline and production of bacteriocin. These two plasmids cooperated in conjugal transfer and formed an infective block of genetic information, which could be transferred to other strains of Enterobacteriaceae and cause their virulence.
