Urinary mutagenicity and N-acetylation phenotype in textile industry workers exposed to arylamines.

Primary aromatic amines have been identified epidemiologically as human carcinogens. It has been suggested that the target organ affected by aromatic amines is dependent on the rate of metabolic activation. Epidemiological studies have shown an association between low acetyl transferase activity and bladder cancer risk. On this basis, our working hypothesis was that the slow acetylators could follow in a higher extent the metabolic pathway independent of N-acetylation, leading to the excretion of conjugates of electrophyles with glucuronic acid. The instability of these glucuronides could be responsible for the association between arylamine-induced bladder cancer and slow acetylator phenotype. A total of 153 individuals were included in this study: 70 exposed to arylamines (working in textile industry) and 83 nonexposed. The following parameters were determined in urine: mutagenic index in the absence of metabolic activation, S9; mutagenic index in the presence of S9; and the mutagenic index after incubation of the urine with beta-glucuronidase. All individuals were phenotyped according to their capacity of N-acetylation by using isoniazid as drug test. The results show that the mutagenic index after incubation of the urine with beta-glucuronidase is statistically higher in exposed subjects when compared with nonexposed individuals (P less than 0.001), this parameter being statistically higher among exposed subjects who were slow acetylators than among rapid metabolizers, independent of the fact that they were smokers or nonsmokers. There were no significant differences between groups for the mutagenicity in urine not incubated with beta-glucuronidase.

Biosorption of Baftkar textile effluent.

Decolourization of wastewater from a textile plant by a marine Aspergillus niger was studied. The fungus was previously isolated from Gorgan Bay in the Caspian Sea. The kinetics of decolourization was studied by varying energy sources. The best decolourization was achieved when sucrose was used as source of carbon and energy. NH4+ ion was demonstrated to be the best nitrogen source. Color reduction was found to increase from 80-97% as inoculum concentration increased from 0.04-1.0 g/L. A minimum inoculum of 0.2 g/L is necessary to achieve decolourization. The optimal temperature for the growth of A. niger on Baftkar wastewater is found to be 30 degrees C. 90-96% colour reduction is achieved in 19-20 hr of contact of mycelium cell with the wastewater. Colour reduction in a continuous column reactor of 70% was obtained using treated mycelium (NaOH, 90 degrees C) after 1 hr.

The role of enzymes produced by white-rot fungus Irpex lacteus in the decolorization of the textile industry effluent.

The textile industry wastewater has been decolorized efficiently by the white rot fungus, Irpex lacteus, without adding any chemicals. The degree of the decolorization of the dye effluent by shaking or stationary cultures is 59 and 93%, respectively, on the 8th day. The higher level of manganese-dependent peroxidase (MnP) and non-specific peroxidase (NsP) was detected in stationary cultures than in the cultures shaken. Laccase activities were equivalent in both cultures and its level was not affected significantly by the culture duration. Neither lignin peroxidase (LiP) nor Remazol Brilliant Blue R oxidase (RBBR ox) was detected in both cultures. The absorbance of the dye effluent was significantly decreased by the stationary culture filtrate of 7 days in the absence of Mn (II) and veratryl alcohol. In the stationary culture filtrate, three or more additional peroxidase bands were detected by the zymogram analysis.

Pulmonary function and morbidity in textile mill workers.

The study was conducted in a large cotton textile mill in Surat City. A selected number of 278 employees were evaluated for social, anthropological and pulmonary functions. No parameters except the period of exposure to dust reduced pulmonary function; it was statistically significant in the case of vital capacity and maximum breathing capacity. Out of 23.94% pulmonary morbidity observed, the byssinosis rate was 1.62.

Study on ground water characteristics and the effects of discharged effluents from textile units at Karur District.

A study was made on the physico-chemical characteristics of water samples mixed with effluent discharged from textile industries at Chellandipalayam (Site--I), Senaparatti (Site--II) and Pasupathipalayam (Sites--III and IV) revealed the elevated levels of Ca, Mg, Na, Cr, K, Ni, Cu, Zn, CO3, SO4, NO3 and Cl- . The concentrations of these ions exceeded the limit prescribed by ISI. The increase in the concentrations of ions was revealed by higher values of electrical conductivity (EC). Water at these sites was found to be hard, brackish and unsuitable for drinking purpose. In all these sites, the seed germination of rice alone was significantly affected among the other crops tested. Irrigation of crops with ground water notably lowered the quantity of reserve food in rice, wheat (starch), and sugarcane (sugar), indicating the interference of their metabolic pathway by polluted ground water.

[Assessment of asbestos exposure, mortality study, and health intervention in workers formerly exposed to asbestos in a small factory making drying machines for textile finishing and the paper mill industry in Pistoia, Italy].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Three malignant pleural mesotheliomas occurred among workers of a small factory that manufactured drying machines for the textile and paper mill industries using asbestos cement (crocidolite, amosite and chrysotile) as insulating panels. The Occupational Medicine Unit of the Local Health Unit of Pistoia, Italy, carried out an intervention programme in the plant in order to 1) assess past asbestos exposure via analysis of the fibre content of samples from drying machines, and of dust samples collected in the factory. Information on the characteristics of occupational exposure was also collected; 2) investigate cancer mortality by means of a mortality study of the employees and, 3) carry out a health intervention programme in workers formally exposed to asbestos in the past. METHODS: Samples from the drying machines and dust samples collected in the factory were analysed using X-ray diffractometric methods. Information on the characteristics of occupational exposure were collected by interviewing plant workers. Two-hundred and fifty employees who had worked in the factory between 1962 and 2000 were included in the mortality study. Follow-up was performed from 1962 to 2002. Health intervention in workers exposed to asbestos in the past involved general practitioners and occupational physicians (first level medical examinations); pneumologists and radiologists (second level medical examinations) of the local health unit. RESULTS: Asbestos fibres were found both in samples from drying machines and in dust samples collected in the factory. Interviews with workers showed that asbestos exposure varied considerably. The SMR for mesothelioma and lung cancer in 234 male workers were 37.0 (95%CI: 4.47-130.0), and 1.29 (95%CI: 0.26-3.78), respectively, based on mortality rates for Tuscany region. Sixty-two workers underwent first level medical examinations; 57 second level examinations. Chronic obstructive lung disease was found in 3 workers; restrictive lung disease was found in 3 employees, one of whom had pleural plaques. CONCLUSIONS: Further investigation is needed in order to identify unknown asbestos exposures in small metal engineering factories.

Evaluating occupational health nursing units in Bangkok textile factories: exploring the world through international occupational health programs.

The purpose of this study was to examine the service quality of nursing units in Bangkok textile factories. Descriptive survey research was combined with a qualitative design using participative observation. The sample consisted of factory managers, nurses, and employees. Data were collected between November 2001 and February 2002 using questionnaires, observation, in-depth interviews, and focus groups. Nurses' education levels and quality of design and arrangement of nursing units explained 15.7% of the variance in service quality. Furthermore, qualitative data supported clients' satisfaction with service quality, except for the tangibility of the service. These findings suggest that the quality of nursing service units could be improved by management's attention to unit design, arrangement of nursing units, and nurses' education levels. Hiring registered nurses and restructuring nursing units are recommended.

Effects of long term exposure to occupational noise on textile industry workers' lung function.

UNLABELLED: Vibroacoustic disease is a pathology caused by long occupational exposure to large pressure amplitude and low frequency noise. It is a systemic disease, with evolvement of respiratory structures. The exposure workers to this noise of textile industry may favour alterations in lung function. We studied 28 women working more than ten years in cotton-mill rooms to evaluate their lung function, including Spirometry, forced oscillation technique (I.O.S.) and Diffusion capacity. These results were compared with those of 30 women of similar ages not exposed to similar noise and not presenting respiratory disease. Statistical significance (P<0.05) was found with FEV25, R5 and Delta Rs5-Rs20. There was a resistance frequency dependence in 36% of the population exposed to noise, not statistically confirmed. Neither restriction nor changes in diffusing capacity where detected. CONCLUSION: The analysis of global alterations of lung function parameters suggests small airways aggression by noise. However we cannot definitively exclude the influence of cotton dust inhalation in itself which effects could be increased by the loss of ciliated cells and impairment of airways clearance caused by noise.

[Modification of DNA typing of blood stains by textile stain carriers].

Samples of 20 microliters blood were applicated von 55 different textiles, containing all usual materials for clothes, straight from the fabric and after thorough washing. DNA profiling was influenced only by blue jeans and blue terry towel straight from the fabric; in some of these samples there was an inhibition of the restriction enzyme digest that could not be prevented by an additional dialysis step.

[A study of textile noise influence on maternal function and embryo-growth].

Ninety hundred seventy-eight female textile workers exposed to noise (greater than or equal to 85 dB (A)) were recruited as the subjects of observation group, and 402 nonexposed female workers were chosen as the controls (less than 75 dB (A)). According to noise level, the observation group was subdivided into three groups: group 1, 100-104 dB (A), 416 workers; group 2, 95-99 dB, (A), 310 workers; group 3, 85-94 dB (A), 252 workers. Non-conditional logistic regression model was used to exclude the effect of mixed factors, such as age and working life. The result showed that noise-exposure could have some adverse effect on reproductive function of women and embryo growth. The workers exposed to noise had significantly increased incidence rates for irregular menstrual cycle, dysmenorrhea, lumbago, hypertension in pregnancy, threatened abortion, spontaneous abortion, premature labour, dystocia and low birth weight of newborns. When the noise intensity heightened, the sorts of abnormal function of reproduction increased and the risk of incidence raised too. These demonstrated a dose-response relationship between the noise intensity and incidence rate. The noise-working life had significant effects on the incidence of hypertension in pregnancy and prematurity. Although the age had some influence, it was not statistically significant. In terms of the maternal function and embryo growth, the factors in order of risk are: noise intensity greater than working life greater than age.

[Nutritional assessment of women working in the textile industry in Lodz from 1986 to 1989].

This communication was designed to determine the intake of food products and nutrients in randomly selected manual workers (women) of the textile industry, as well as to quantitatively evaluate the deficiency or excess of nutrients in their average diet. Daily nutrition was evaluated in 300 females, manual workers aged 35-44 years. Rheir nutrition was assessed by the method of a questionnaire concerning food intake during 24 h prior to the inquiry. As a result, the kind of nutrition was determined. Moreover, the nutritive value of the daily food rations, as well as the intake of the different groups of food products were calculated and compared with the recommended food standard B. The results indicate that: the observed unbalanced nutrition involving deficiencies of milk, vegetables, fruits and cereals may lead to e.g. disturbances in the acid-base equilibrium and to hypovitaminoses; the deficiency of magnesium and calcium creates the risk at the accelerating sclerotic changes; deficiencies of iron, zinc and cooper in the diet of women of reproductive age may result in the occurrence of anemia and exert an adverse effect on the offspring; on account of work in two or three shifts, it is indispensable to organize taking of meals during working hours.

[The effect of a preventive health care program in a textile plant].

A two-month field experiment was carried out on a sample of 95 women spinners and weavers in a textile plant. In the experimental group, which consisted of 54 workers, a programme of four preventive health measures was applied. The workers were asked to wear a combination of ear-muffs and cotton-wool offering optimal hearing protection and to take up individual mini programmes of physical exercise at work; they were offered a meal of the Pliva dietetic preparation Vitamalt before work and Donat-Mg natural mineral water from Zdravilisce Rogaska Slatina as a magnesium supplement. The measures from the programme were accepted and respected by 85-94% of the workers. As a result, fatigue at work was significantly reduced, and the subjectively estimated work satisfaction was markedly improved. A statistically insignificant trend towards the rise of productivity was also noticed during the period of programme application.

[Inhalation anthrax in a textile worker: non-fatal course].

The development of dyspnea, hematemesis, melaena and symptoms of shock following an apparently minor infection of the upper respiratory tract in a 37-year-old textile worker marked the onset of an acute threatening illness. Pleuracentesis revealed 3.8 l of hemorrhagic exudate. Chest x-rays showed a significant increase in mediastinal width. Conspicuous laboratory findings were hemoconcentration, anemia and leukocytosis, and increased serum activities for SGOT, SGPT and alkaline phosphatase. The infection occurred during an industrial epidemic of 24 cases of cutaneous anthrax, and the diagnosis of inhalation anthrax was based on the occupational exposure and a positive "Anthraxin" skin test which was later confirmed by EIA. The patient survived the usually fatal illness after treatment with antibiotics and prednisolone.

Byssinosis in cotton textile workers of Kishangarh.

Byssinosis is an occupational hazard for the workers exposed to cotton dust. In this study 616 cotton textile workers were studied; out of which 149 had byssinosis; 37 (24.7%) had grade-1/2, 78 (52.7%) grade-1, 25 (16.6%) grade-2 and 9 (6.0%) of grade-3 byssinosis. Majority of the byssinotics were of age group between 36-40 years and had developed disease after 16 years of exposure. Disease was more common among smokers and severe, in whom consumption was more than 15 cigarettes/bidis per day for more than 10 years. Ventilatory function tests were markedly abnormal compared with non-byssinotic. On clinical examination and laboratory investigation (specially eosinophilia) and, radiological investigation (x-ray chest) no positive finding was detected. The high prevalence rate of the disease in this study was apparently due to poor working conditions of the workers.
