Customized shade guide.

The technique described provides the dentist with a customized shade guide for each patient. A shade selection is made before the preparation appointment. The laboratory can supply the dentist with a preview of the finished restoration (Fig. 4) to provide a second chance to match tooth shades without an extra appointment or remakes.

Custom-made denture teeth and denture base material for removable partial dentures.

A method that uses Isosit material to fabricate custom-made denture teeth and denture base has been described. The advantages of this technique are the denture teeth can be made to function in harmony with dynamics of the stomatognathic system; any type of occlusal scheme can be used; the material is esthetically pleasing; it can be characterized; it can be used as a denture base material, which can also be characterized; it can be repaired, relined, or rebased with little difficulty; and laboratory procedures can be accomplished in the dental office or laboratory.

Subpontic osseous proliferation.

Nine patients, five women and four men, demonstrated bone growth in an edentulous region of the posterior mandible covered with a pontic. The reasons for this bone growth could include genetic predetermination, functional stresses, and chronic irritation. This bone growth has important clinical and basic science implications. The condition was seen only in adults, only in the mandibular posterior region, and with a variety of pontic designs. Subpontic osseous proliferation was documented in nine patients, but no conclusion about the etiology was made.

Esthetic matching.

A chart that allows the reader to appreciate the diverse factors involved in esthetic matching has been presented. Although substantial information is presented in the chart, it is incomplete; and future research will contribute additional information. The chart is not intended as a substitute for learning, but a stimulus to further study.

Effects of batch variation on shade of dental porcelain.

Three different batches of three commercially available porcelains were applied to 36 specimens of two noble alloys. The shades were visually compared by nine observers. Results indicated the following. No color differences were found among specimens of individual batches. Discerning color changes were observed among three batches of one brand of porcelain. The porcelain fired in the laboratory may not match the manufacturer's standard shade guide. Batch to batch variation of porcelain may necessitate the fabrication of customized shade tabs with fresh batches of porcelain.

Combination syndrome: a treatment approach.

A method of treating patients who require a complete maxillary denture opposing a mandibular bilateral distal-extension removable partial denture has been described. This technique attempts to minimize the destructive changes seen in these patients by carefully distributing occlusal stress over the hard and soft tissues and by developing an occlusal relationship that is stable and balanced.

The acid-etched fixed partial denture: a two-year report.

A 2-year report on 10 acid-etched fixed partial dentures was presented. Similar to other studies, it indicates that the acid-etched fixed partial denture is a clinically acceptable restoration for properly selected patients.
