Histamine H1- and H2-receptors are differentially and spatially distributed in cerebral vessels.

Receptor sites for neurotransmitters may be spatially oriented within cerebral vascular walls. The direction from which neurohumoral stimuli arise (e.g., perivascular or intravascular) and the location and type of receptor activated may therefore determine the nature of vascular response. I review a series of studies that examined cerebrovascular responses to histamine and suggest that histamine receptors are differentially and spatially organized in two profiles within the cerebral circulation. A transmural distribution is suggested from the following results: increases in permeability of the blood-brain barrier (endothelial cells) to intra-arterial infusion of histamine were mediated by H2-receptors; increases in blood flow to intra-arterial infusion of histamine occurred only after the blood-brain barrier was disrupted and were the result of stimulation of both H1- and H2-receptors. These responses probably occur within inner layers of arterial smooth muscle; dilatation of pial arterioles to local microapplication of histamine and its receptor agonists indicates that H2-receptors are the predominant type in outer layers of arterial smooth muscle. A segmental profile of histamine receptors within the cerebrovascular bed is suggested as follows: since both H1- and H2-receptors could mediate dilatation of arterioles and arteries, it may be concluded that both types of receptor are present in resistance vessels; in the capillary bed, H2-receptors are the predominant type; capacitance vessels (pial veins) did not respond to perivascular application of histamine or its agonists. These studies suggest that receptors for histamine may be sparsely populated or absent in cerebral venous smooth muscle.

Increasing inequalities in risk of murder in Britain: trends in the demographic and spatial distribution of murder, 1981-2000.

This study analyses demographic and spatial factors that underlie the rise in murder rates seen in Britain between 1981 and 2000 and considers the possible contribution of a public health approach to the understanding of murder. Comparison of murder rates by age group and sex finds that increases occurred only among males aged 5-59 years, and were greatest among males aged 20-24 years. Analysis of the relationship with poverty at the area level, using the Breadline Britain index and deciles based on wards, demonstrates that increases in murder rates were concentrated in the poorest areas. Rates of murder have risen in the same population groups and areas that have experienced increases in suicide and may be associated with worsening social and spatial inequality.

Spatial distribution of galls caused by Aculus tetanothrix (Acari: Eriophyoidea) on arctic willows.

The distribution of galls caused by Aculus tetanothrix (Acari: Eriophyoidea) on three Salix species was studied. The factors influencing this distribution were analysed, i.e. willow species, study area and shoot length. Spatial pattern of gall distribution within the shoot was also examined. The study was conducted in Russia, Kola Peninsula. Densities of galls caused by A. tetanothrix differed significantly among willow species. Considerably higher gall density was recorded in the White Sea coast than in the Khibiny Mountains. This may be explained by the influence of a milder maritime climate that favors mite occurrence compared to a harsh and variable mountain climate that limits mite abundance. There was no relationship between the gall density and the shoot length. The highest density of galls was recorded on the inner offshoots; within the offshoot, there was a maximum density on the fifth leaf. This pattern was repeatable for all shoots studied, independent of the study area, willow species and length of shoots, suggesting the optimal conditions for A. tetanothrix exist on leaves in the middle part of a shoot. This distribution pattern may be an effect of the trade-off between the costs and benefits resulting from leaf quality and mite movement along the shoot. This hypothesis, however, needs to be tested experimentally.

Levels of 137Cs in muddy sediments of the seabed of the Bay of Cadiz, Spain. Part I. Vertical and spatial distribution of activities.

This is the first of a two-part paper. This first part describes a detailed study conducted of the spatial and vertical distribution of the concentration of the radionuclide (137)Cs, utilising columns of sediment extracted from the seabed of the Bay of Cadiz (Spain) as specimens. The activity concentrations have been measured by means of gamma spectrometry using a HPGe detector and (137)Cs is used as an indicator of the sedimentation and contamination processes in the zone. At the same time the relationship between the levels of activity found and other hydrodynamic and sedimentological variables characteristic of the zone have been studied. The experimental results obtained will also serve to develop a model of the distribution of (137)Cs, which will be presented in the second part of this paper.

Can biopsy be a reliable predictor of spatial distribution of prostate cancer? Comparison of a novel biopsy regimen with radical prostatectomy findings.

OBJECTIVES: To obtain accurate spatial information on cancer distribution with a novel prostate biopsy regimen. METHODS: From 2003 to 2005, 265 patients underwent a three fan-shaped biopsy (3FSB) technique of 12 to 14 cores and sextant biopsy (SB) simultaneously. When both techniques had positive findings, and radical prostatectomy was performed, the concordance among the positive biopsy locations of the SB, 3FSB, and the combination of both (the reference standard biopsy [RSB]), the proven locations of cancer, and the presence of extracapsular extension and positive surgical margins was calculated. RESULTS: A total of 41 patients were selected, and 74 locations (left and right apex, left and right lobe) had cancer. Of these, 61 were confirmed by RSB, 58 by 3FSB, and 43 by SB with a sensitivity of 95%, 78%, and 58%, respectively. The sensitivity at the apical location was consistently greater for the 3FSB at 68% (19 of 28) compared with 40% (11 of 28) for all proven apical positive localizations and 100% (19 of 19) compared with 58% (11 of 19) for the RSB. The receiver operating characteristic analysis showed 78% accuracy for 3FSB and 68% accuracy for SB compared with the RSB. At the apex, the 3FSB and SB revealed positive surgical margins with a sensitivity of 1 and 0.4, specificity of 0.067 and 0.4, positive predictive value of 0.263 and 0.182, and negative predictive value of 1 and 0.667, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The 3FSB had a great ability to find cancer in the gland, especially at the apex.

The Abdominal-B gene of Drosophila melanogaster: overlapping transcripts exhibit two different spatial distributions.

The Abdominal-B (Abd-B) gene of Drosophila controls the specification of segment identities in the posterior abdomen. We describe here the spatial and temporal distribution of Abd-B transcripts. At least five RNA species are detected on Northern blots with probes within the region of the Abd-B homeobox. We have identified probes specific for subsets of these transcripts and have used these probes to study the distribution of each subset by in situ hybridization to embryonic tissue sections. The transcripts can be divided into two groups: one group is expressed maximally in parasegment (PS)13 and extends anteriorly to PS10; the other is expressed only in PS14 and 15. These two different patterns of expression correspond to the anatomical domains defined by two classes of mutations in Abd-B. These results help explain the complex genetic interactions and phenotypes of mutations within this gene.

A neuron model with spatially distributed synaptic input.

I have assembled a neuron model simulating contiguous patches of nerve cell membrane. With this model I have examined the functional significance of different spatial and temporal distributions of synaptic inputs. The model consists of two terminal electronic analogue circuits with inputs controlled by a LINC computer. One terminal represents the inside of a membrane patch, the other represents the outside. Two circuit designs are used: one simulates spike-generating regions of the neuron, the other simulates subthreshold activity in inexcitable regions. To simulate a neuron, patches are assembled in various spatial arrangements by suitable connection to the "intracellular" nodes. Thus the relation of neuron geometry to aspects of spatiotemporal summation of synaptic inputs can be investigated readily. Performance of the model is assessed by comparison with results from microelectrode studies in the cochlear nucleus of the cat. In particular, the peristimulus time (PST) histogram and averaged membrane potential are used for quantitative comparison. The model suggests that the geometry of the neuron's receptive surface can account for a wide variety of physiologically observed behavior, particularly in response to dynamic stimuli.

Components of change in the spatial distribution of the elderly population in Ontario, 1976-1986.

"Using data from the 1976, 1981, and 1986 [Canadian] Censuses for Ontario, components of change in the elderly population are obtained by cohort survival methods. The significance of rapid metropolitan growth of the elderly compared with the slow growth of the rural elderly is highlighted, while intra-county distributional shifts in the elderly population raise important questions for the next decade." Seasonal and spatial distributions of tributyltin in surface sediment of the Tolka Estuary, Dublin, Ireland.

Aquatic pollution by tributyltin (TBT) is of concern because of its high toxicity to marine life. TBT loadings of estuarine sediments may remain elevated because of long flushing times in estuaries due to their enclosed physicality. The Tolka Estuary, Co. Dublin, Ireland, is a typical Irish urban estuary. It has a significant pollution loading. The results of 12 months' analysis of TBT spatial and temporal distributions in this estuary are presented in this paper. Data from a total of 10 sample points are presented. The concentrations of TBT in the sediment were analysed using differential pulse polarography. Significant seasonal and spatial trends in TBT distribution were observed over the 12-month period. TBT concentrations ranged from 0.1 ppb in winter to 8.6 ppb in summer with a 1.5 ppb average. Organic matter (OM) concentrations of sediment exhibited similar seasonal trends and a positive correlation between OM and TBT distributions was observed.

Spatial distribution and redistribution of immigrants in the metropolitan United States, 1980 and 1990.

"Using data from the 1980 and 1990 5 percent [U.S.] Public Use Microdata Samples, I compare the settlement patterns and reasons for migration among foreign-born cohorts.... Although it is not possible to follow individuals over the two periods, aggregate changes in group location and migration patterns can be evaluated. Both period (differences associated with migration over time) and cohort (differences in migration behavior across arrival cohorts within a particular period) effects can be modeled. Of interest are the distribution, redistribution, and magnitude of change in the immigrant settlement system, along with why these adjustments occur for the 25 largest metropolitan areas in the United States. Results indicate that arrival cohorts of different vintages show contrasting responses to the determinants of settlement and migration behavior, although the overall distribution of the foreign-born population changed little over the two census periods."

[Prediction of the spatial distribution of Oncomelania snails in marshland of Jiangning County using the Ordinary Kriging].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the methods to predict the distribution of Oncomelania hupensis in the marshland of Jiangning County. METHODS: Semi-variogram was used to analyze the spatial autocorrelation of snails' distribution in the marshland of Jiangning using the Arcview8.1. A prediction map for the snails' distribution was established using the Ordinary Kriging and evaluated using the cross-validation. RESULTS: Analysis showed that the distribution of alive snails in the marshland of Jiangning in the year 2000 was auto-correlated in spatial. The semi-variogram model which was spherical demonstrated that the variation of alive snails in spatial were related with distance apart when the distance was less than 0.0301. The prediction map of the snail distribution in the marshland of Jiangning was established based on the semi-variogram using the Ordinary Kriging. The cross-validation showed that the prediction map could estimate the distribution of snails in the marshland of Jiangning correctly. And the determinant coefficient for the prediction model was 0.973. CONCLUSION: It is feasible to predict the snail distribution in the marshland of Jiangning County by using Ordinary Kringing and data from the surveillance spot.
