Using guiding-idea theories of the person to develop educational campaigns against drug abuse and other health-threatening behavior.

Educational campaigns against health-threatening behaviors such as drug abuse may lose effectiveness because they tend to be narrow, atheoretical and to stress negative effects. As a corrective, it is proposed that health campaigns take into account the broad range of human needs and consider how the health-threatening behavior may be gratifying to each need. This allows taking into consideration not just the bad effects (which tend to be obvious) of such behaviors as drug abuse, but also the gratifications they provide to a variety of human needs, by their associated lifestyles as well as by their pharmaceutical effects. In this way anti-drug campaigns can be made to cope more relevantly with the attractions of such health-threatening behaviors. We sketch 16 theorized human needs, widely contrasting in their assumption of what instigates human action and what terminates it, each of which theories has proven provocative in guiding basic research. From each of the 16 theories some implications are drawn regarding the attractions of drug abuse and regarding the design of educational campaigns against such health-threatening behaviors.

Clinical photography simplified: developing a personal set of uniform views.

Clinical photography in plastic surgical settings often falls into the hands of staff nurses. Since physicians often don't have the luxury of employing full-time professional photographers, nurses and/or other auxiliary staff are responsible for shooting clinical photographs. A standard photographic routine, outlined in the following article, will ensure accurate photographic documentation.

Personality traits in women with Turner syndrome.

Turner syndrome is caused by the total or partial absence of, or structural abnormalities in, one sex chromosome. A personality style characterized by traits related to low neuroticism and high extroversion has been reported for females with Turner syndrome, indicating possible genetic factors related to personality development. This study examines personality traits in 37 Swedish women with Turner syndrome using the Karolinska Scales of Personality Inventory. Compared to reference data, the subjects rated themselves as more sensation seeking, less detached, less verbally aggressive and less irritated. These results partially support previous findings. The subjects were divided into three karyotype groups: 45,X (n = 13), 45,X/46,XX or 45,X/45,XY (n = 13), and structural abnormalities (n = 11). Contrary to some previous findings, no differences in personality were found between the karyotype groups.

A retrospective study of separation in the development of adult avoidant personality disorder.

This retrospective study investigated experiences of separation and perceptions of early relations with parents and peers by patients diagnosed as having avoidant personality disorder. The main hypothesis of our study was that patients diagnosed as having avoidant personality disorder would report more actual separations and more pathogenic parenting than normal control subjects. This hypothesis was not supported. The main features differentiating patients from normals were: perceptions of a encouraging home climate, and less demonstrations of love and pride in the child on the part of the parents.

A critical review of the validity of ego development theory and its measurement.

Loevinger's (1976) theory of ego development represents an important and original approach to understanding personality development. More than 20 years have elapsed since the last substantial critical review of the validity of the theory and its measurement (Loevinger, 1979). Our article provides an updated critical review of the theory by reviewing the considerable body of research that has accumulated over the past 20 years. This review addresses the construct, predictive, and discriminant validity of ego development theory and the Washington University Sentence Completion Test (WUSCT; Loevinger & Wessler, 1970; Loevinger, Wessler, & Redmore, 1970) as its measurement. We conclude that there is substantial empirical support for the conceptual soundness of ego development theory and the WUSCT.

Prevention of alcohol misuse through the development of personal and social competence: a pilot study.

Seventh graders (N = 239) from two New York City junior high schools were involved in a 9-month study testing the efficacy of a broad-spectrum approach to prevention of alcohol misuse. The two schools were randomly assigned to experimental and control conditions. The seventh graders in the treatment school received a 20-session program targeted at the major cognitive, attitudinal, social and personality factors believed to promote the early stages of alcohol misuse. The program contained material on decision making, coping with anxiety, general social skills and assertiveness (including techniques for resisting peer pressure to drink) as well as information about the short- and long-term consequences of alcohol misuse. Complete pretest, posttest 1 and posttest 2 data were collected from 167 students (89 women). A significantly greater proportion of the students in the experimental group reported less frequent drinking (p less than .02), less drinking per occasion (p less than .04), and less frequent episodes of drunkenness (p less than .01) than the students in the control group.

An introduction to Rasch measurement for scale development and person assessment.

This article: a) outlines some of the limitations of True Score Theory, b) discusses some advantages of Rasch measurement, and c) compares the results of Rasch and factor analytic techniques applied to a common data set. Using a mail survey, 206 female members of a national nursing association completed Ryckman's (1982) Perceived Physical Ability Scale. Exploratory factor analysis identified one factor with a Cronbach alpha of .78. Rasch fit statistics also identified one dimension with a person reliability of .76. Rasch methods were also used to investigate the rating scale functioning, additional construct validity issues, and person diagnosis. Discrepancies between the two estimates of internal consistency are discussed and differences in the utility of the two methodologies are reviewed.

Peptide phage display: opportunities for development of personalized anti-cancer strategies.

Personalized medicine is critical for cancer patients, because (1) cancer is a highly heterogeneous disease with major molecular differences in the expression and distribution of tumor cell surface markers among patients with the same type and grade of cancer, (2) cellular mutations tend to accumulate as cancer progresses, further increasing tumor heterogeneity, and (3) currently used cancer therapies often are toxic to normal cells, causing severe side effects rarely seen in other diseases. To prevent side effects and to improve effectiveness, cytotoxic therapies should be targeted and each patient should be profiled for the presence of cancer targets before the therapy is administered. Phage display technology utilizes combinatorial libraries of proteins expressed on phage particles that can be selected for specific binding to cancer cells. Such cancer-specific molecules can be used in a variety of applications, including identification of cell-specific targeting molecules; identification of cell surface biomarkers; profiling of specimens obtained from individual cancer patients, and the design of peptide-based anti-cancer therapeutics for personalized treatments. This review is focused on peptide phage display strategies that target cell surfaces because many biomarkers important in cancer are differentially expressed molecules located on the outside of the cell membranes.
