Electrophoretic subtyping of phosphoglucomutase locus 1 (PGM1) polymorphism in the Italian and Czechoslovakian populations.

About 3,500 subjects from Italy and Czechoslovakia have been analyzed by acid starch gel electrophoresis for the subtyping of PGM1 polymorphism. The Italian sample included three different subgroups, from Northern, Central and Southern Italy. The allele frequencies found in the three groups do not differ significantly from each other; the observed values in the pooled sample are: PGM1S1 = 0.594, PGM1F1 = 0.118, PGM2S1 = 0.231, PGM2F1 = 0.057. In the Czechoslovakian group, which differs significantly from the Italian population, the following allele frequencies were found: PGM1S1 = 0.639, PGM1F1 = 0.118, PGM2S1 = 0.180, PGM2F1 = 0.063. The analysis of 217 families did not show any exception to Mendelian inheritance of the patterns.

Polymorphism of placental phosphoglucomutase in Japanese.

Polymorphism of PGM1 and PGM3 types was investigated in placental extracts from 127 unrelated Japanese parturients living in Yamanashi Prefecture. The gene frequencies were 0.787 for PGM1(1), 0.213 for PGM1(2); 0.760 for PGM13, 0.240 for PGM3(2), respectively. There was no significant association between the PGM1 and PGM3 systems. The PGM3(2) frequency in the present sample population was higher than those in Kanto District, but lower than those in Kinki District.

[Distribution of erythrocyte EsD and PGM1 (phosphoglucomutase) phenotypes in the Han population of Changsha district].

Phenotyping of erythrocyte EsD and PGM1 enzymes was performed by a mixed agarose-starch gel electrophoresis in 165 healthy blood donors of Changsha District. The gene frequencies and cumulative discrepancy power(CDP) were calculated. The phenotype frequencies of EsD and PGM1 were compared not only with the different Chinese nationalities but also with those reported by the other countries showing a good correlation with the phenotype distributions of Han people in the other cities of China. The result showed that the gene frequencies of erythrocyte EsD1 and PGM1(1) were 0.6242 and 0.7121 in Han population of Changsha District, respectively. This method is now used routinely in our laboratory and is superior for the examination of individuality and identification of paternity.

Preliminary evidence for a fourth phosphoglucomutase (PGM) locus in the dog.

The PGM polymorphisms were investigated in starch gel electrophoresis in a total of 34 dogs. After prolonged incubation, a zone located 5-6 cm anodal to PGM3 was found in which two clear bands were identified. Two dogs had only the faster band, and two dogs had only the slower band. This provides preliminary evidence for the existence of a fourth PGM locus in dogs. A series of exclusion experiments indicates that the newly found bands contain PGM activity.
