Eight patients with muscular tumors--all malignant--were reviewed. Seven patients were examined by magnetic resonance imaging. Some of them also underwent conventional radiology and computed tomography. One patient was examined by computed tomography only. An overview and short description of the muscular tumors are given. The findings with the different imaging techniques are presented, followed by a discussion of the role of the imaging techniques. The final conclusion is that MRI is the modality of choice for detection, staging, and follow-up of muscular tumors, although the signal intensity features are not always specific.

The biopsy of a musculoskeletal lesion is an important event, the outcome of which guides patient management and helps determine patient prognosis. The principles of biopsy include complete radiologic staging before the biopsy, thorough prebiopsy planning including consultation with the pathologist and radiologist, determining the most appropriate method of biopsy (fine needle, core needle, open surgical biopsy), placing the biopsy tract appropriately, and making sure the biopsy tract can be removed at the time of resection, avoiding contamination of uninvolved structures, avoiding transverse incisions, preventing pathologic fracture, handling biopsy tissue appropriately, and considering referral before biopsy. The common errors of biopsy include sampling errors, postbiopsy hematomas, the use of transverse incisions, tumor implantation, and the treatment of an unsuspected sarcoma with prophylactic fixation. Thoughtful prebiopsy planning and careful completion of the biopsy can result in an expedient and accurate diagnosis. If the treating physician lacks significant expertise in performing biopsy and management of patients with musculoskeletal lesions, then referral to a musculoskeletal oncologist before biopsy should be considered.

Growth characteristics, survival time, sex differences and hormonal effects, and various biochemical parameters were evaluated in a transplantable Furth/Wistar rat Wilms' tumor model. Survival time was dependent on site of tumor transplant and ranged from a mean of 28 days for intrarenal implantation to 44 days intramusculary. Maximum tumor weight (130 g) was obtained via subcutaneous implant. Lung metastasis was evident in the majority of animals with the exception of those receiving the tumor implant intraperitoneally. The levels of erythropoietin and serum calcium and phosphatase were comparable to control values whereas hematocrit levels declined. Tumor tissue arginase or total protein remained unchanged during tumor growth. In these same tissues DNA, content and 5-alpha-reductase activity significantly and progressively increased with concomitant tumor growths. Measurements of lactic dehydrogenase, alkaline phosphatase, and their isoenzymes indicated patterns of liver involvement which were not macroscopically evident. After 31 days of subcutaneous tumor transplant, male and female rats had tumors of comparable weights. Orchiectomy or estradiol treatment significantly reduced tumor weight in males. In female rats testosterone treatment significantly increased tumor weights. DNA concentration in tumor tissue was unaffected by treatment. Similiarly, although 5-alpha-reductase activity was higher in tumors from males, and arginase higher in females, these enzymes were not affected by surgical or hormonal treatment.

A 42 year old male presented with painless soft tissue mass 8x7x6.5 cm in right scapular region for 2 months. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) showed a malignant clear cell tumour. Ultrasonography (USG) abdomen revealed a heterogeneous mass m 8.6x7x8.4 at the lower pole of left kidney. USG guided FNAC from left kidney mass showed cytomorphology consistent with RCC.
We present the case of a 67-year-old man with primary malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) of the diaphragm. He was admitted to our hospital with anorexia and loss of body weight. High serum levels of AST, ALT, ALP and gamma-GTP were observed. Several imaging studies disclosed a large tumor on the right side of the diaphragm to the right lobe of the liver. The entire tumor was resected, and histopathological examination of the specimen revealed the characteristics of MFH. MFH originating from the diaphragm is very rare, and we present the case of this patient in addition to a discussion of previous literature.
BACKGROUND: Bone marrow infiltration occurs rarely at presentation of rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) or other childhood solid tumors. This possibility leads to misdiagnosis of leukemia and incorrect therapies might be administered. METHODS: We report two patients presenting with diffuse bone marrows involvement by neoplastic cells. Initial studies were not consistent with a diagnosis of leukemia and the cases were further studied extensively by indirect immunofluorescence, immunocytochemistry, electron microscopy and cytogenetics. RESULTS: In both cases blast cells were large, poorly differentiated, with immunological reactivity to the anti-desmin antibody. Ultrastructural findings of muscular features and chromosomal translocation t(2;13) (q37;q14) further confirmed the diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma of the alveolar subtype. This was then confirmed histologically in one patient. CONCLUSION: This study stresses the utility of analyzing cases of morphologically undifferentiated marrow blast cells by various techniques, as well as investigating for different types of both hematological and solid neoplasms.
