[The composition and characteristics of the spread of the shot products from a gas-barrel weapon].

Chemical composition and diffusion of additional factors of a shot from barrel gun supplied with a standard chemical cartridge are studied. Experimental shots from gas pistols of three designs were made. During shots from gas barrel guns the victim is exposed to additional factors characteristic of both fire arms and gas barrel guns, namely, fragments of plastic cartridge container and pads, magnesium particles, and lacquer powder. The characteristics of the short range zone for gas barrel guns correspond to those of short barrel fire arms.

[The evaluation of the balance organ in workers occupationally exposed to organic solvents and tinctorial dusts].

The aim of the study was to evaluate the balance organ in persons occupationally exposed to organic solvent vapours. The study was performed in a group of 35 workers employed for eight years on average in two departments of the Polifarb S.A. factory of patients and lacquers, Wrocław. The control group consisted of 53 healthy persons. Static and dynamic posturography was used to assess the condition of the balance organ. In the persons exposed static posturography tests revealed statistically significant increase in the field of spread area and extent of sways, and dynamic posturography tests indicated an increased radius. It was shown that posturography ensure an objective assessment of balance disorders and can be applied in the screening of persons exposed to toxic substances. It is also useful in recording functional condition of the balance organ.

The assessment of DNA damage in lymphocytes of wooden furniture workers.

Single-strand breaks (SSB) and DNA repair were detected in peripheral lymphocytes derived from workers of a furniture factory in a non-polluted region of Poland. The workers were exposed to wood dust (n = 19), or to the dust and varnishes or lacquers together (n = 5). Four groups were studied simultaneously: (a) exposed workers smokers of cigarettes (n = 14), (b) nonexposed smokers--control (n = 14), (c) exposed workers' nonsmokers (n = 14), (d) exposed nonsmokers (n = 10). In exposed workers DNA SSB and DNA repair were statistically significantly increased. DNA SSB was clearly higher in the smoking workers than in the smoking controls. Cigarette smoking itself has produced no evident increase in the frequency of DNA SSB in the control group. Occupational exposure had a significant effect on DNA repair in non stimulated lymphocytes both in smoking and nonsmoking workers.

Clinical and microbiological effects of local chlorhexidine applications.

AIM: To study the effects of an application of chlorhexidine varnish (40%) on dental plaque. DESIGN: Randomised controlled clinical trial. SUBJECTS: 40 patients (50% females), aged 25-34 years after undergoing any necessary restorative treatment. Exactly one half of these individuals practiced good oral hygiene, the efforts of the others were poor. METHOD: Test groups received a chlorhexidine varnish application, the control group received a placebo varnish. Initially and after 2 and 6 weeks, a modified Dentocult SM-test, bleeding on probing, and a plaque index (Quigley-Hein) were recorded. RESULTS: In contrast to the control group, improvements in plaque index and bleeding on probing scores were found in patients with poor oral hygiene. The results of the Dentocult SM-tests showed a considerable reduction of streptococcus colonisation. The test group with good oral hygiene showed only slight improvement of the examined indices after chlorhexidine application. The index parameters of all patients of the placebo groups remained unchanged over the examination time period. CONCLUSION: The application of a chlorhexidine varnish reduced the quantity of the Streptococcus mutans colonies significantly and improved clinical parameters in patients with elevated plaque accumulation.

[Clues in pedestrian-vehicle collisions and their significance for reconstruction of accidents].

Investigations of clues in 87 fatal pedestrian-car accidents which took place with erect posture of the body are reported. Traces of paint proved to be most important clues transferred from the vehicle to the pedestrian's clothing. They derived from the outer paint layer of the collision sites at the front of the vehicle and occurred in 49% of the cases investigated. As has been shown by light and scanning electron microscopic investigations, there is intensive contact between the textile fibers and the paint traces which can be explained by action of heat in the collision. The higher the collision speed, the more readily paint is rubbed off. Because traces of rubbed off paint mark the site of the vehicle impact and indicate the color of the vehicle, they have a high evidence value for reconstruction of the accident. This also applies to traces of molten plastic material as well as to rubbed off chrome and rubber. In contrast to the prevalent view, paint splitters are unsuitable for determining the impact direction. Textile microtraces, traces of blood, hair and tissue occur as transferred clues from the pedestrian to the vehicle. These clues do not permit any statements with regard to the impact direction. They must be evaluated in connection with the remaining clues and the injuries.

The effect of a preventive program, including the application of low-concentration fluoride varnish, on caries control in high-risk children.

The aim of this 2-year prospective randomized clinical study was to evaluate the efficacy of a prevention program for schoolchildren with high caries risk. A sample of 419 subjects was divided into a test (T, n = 259) and control group (C, n = 160). Four times a year, the test group received professional tooth-cleaning and application of a 0.1% fluoride varnish as well as motivation and instruction in oral hygiene. The control group received only oral hygiene instruction and took part in supervised toothbrushing once a year. At baseline and after 2 years, the D3,4MFS and the incipient lesions (D1,2) were recorded. After 2 years, 318 subjects (T = 187, C = 131) were included in the data analysis. The baseline D1,2 was 6.18 (T) and 5.50 (C), the D3,4MFS 2.13 (T) and 2.08 (C), respectively. No statistically significant difference was found for the baseline values. At the final examination, the D1,2 increment was 3.96 in the test and 6.53 in the control group, showing a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001). No such difference was found for the D3,4MFS increment (T: 2.22; C: 2.61). The results indicate that it might not be possible to prevent cavities in high caries risk children by means of the described program.

Effect of an antibacterial varnish on lactic acid production in plaque adjacent to fixed orthodontic appliances.

The effect of an antibacterial varnish on lactic acid concentration in suspensions of early supragingival plaque collected adjacent to fixed orthodontic brackets was evaluated in 25 adolescents using a double-blind split-mouth design with a placebo varnish control. The test varnish contained 1% chlorhexidine and 1% thymol as active ingredients. Both varnishes were applied on two occasions within 3 days and plaque was subsequently collected at 3, 7 and 30 days after the first treatment. The samples were evaluated for total viable counts (TVC) and the proportion of mutans streptococci. Acid fermentation in suspensions was induced by glucose and L(+)-lactic acid concentrations were determined enzymatically after a 30-min incubation period. The test varnish did not affect TVC but reduced the proportion of mutans streptococci significantly at the 7-day follow-up (P<0.05). The concentration of lactic acid was reduced by approximately 20% on the 3- and 7-day follow-ups (P<0.05). The results suggest that the chlorhexidine/thymol-containing varnish may to some extent reduce the viability and metabolic activity of susceptible oral bacteria in suspensions of early supragingival plaque.

Cavity varnish and cavity liner appearance on enamel and dentin.

To study the appearance of a cavity varnish and a cavity liner on prepared enamel and dentin surfaces, longitudinal tooth sections were coated once or twice with Copalite or Tubulitec. Some test specimens were immersed in saline solution for 24 hours, while others were kept in air. They were observed in SEM, and the degree of coverage of the test surfaces, and the smoothness of the materials were evaluated. Neither material provided complete coverage whether one or two layers were applied. Tubulitec seemed to be partially dissolved after immersion in saline solution. Generally, Copalite covered the surfaces better and was smoother than Tubulitec. These findings have implications in regard to the ability of the materials to protect the underlying tissues and to prevent microleakage, which were discussed.

Effects of dental medicaments on examination glove permeability.

Dental care providers wear gloves for all clinical procedures. This study was designed to assess the intactness of examination gloves after exposure to commonly used agents. Finger portions from latex and vinyl examination gloves were sealed to syringe barrels and exposed to alcohol, eugenol, a surface disinfectant, cavity varnish, or commercial mouth wash. Tritiated water was introduced into the finger-tip portion, which was suspended in a vacuum flask containing distilled water. Aliquots of water were withdrawn from the flask at intervals of 5 minutes to 8 hours and analyzed for transfer of radioactivity through the glove tip. Treatment with agents such as eugenol and cavity varnish resulted in significant leakage after 5 to 15 minutes. Although some agents apparently quickly damaged the gloves, leaks developed in untreated gloves with time. Results suggest that visibly intact gloves may have developed microleaks and that changing gloves during long clinical procedures may be indicated.

Surface treatment of a temporary soft liner for increased longevity.

This is a preliminary report on the use of several surface-conditioning agents on a commonly used temporary soft lining material. The surface of the material was treated with either poly(ethyl methacrylate) monomer, mono-poly glaze, or Minute-Stain glaze. Samples were compared with untreated soft liner before and after it was worn by a patient for 30 days. The scanning electron microscope was used to analyze samples. Initially the surface of all samples was intact, with the samples treated with mono-poly glaze and Minute-Stain glaze having fewer irregularities. After 30 days, untreated liner and that treated with monomer showed severe wear with resultant exposure of generalized pits and holes. Most of the defects represented exposure of subsurface air bubbles incorporated during mixing. The mono-poly glaze-treated specimen retained the glasslike appearance that it had before it was worn for 30 days. The Minute-Stain glaze specimen appeared irregular, although without the extensive pitting seen in the first two types of specimens.

In vitro marginal leakage in varnished and lined amalgam restorations.

Black's class I classic cavity preparations were completed in 440 extracted, intact human premolars and restored with two silver amalgams and five different base materials with and without cavity varnish, which resulted in 20 combinations. A standard fluorescent dye test was performed and the percentage of marginal leakage recorded after storage for 7 days, 3 months, and 1 year in 1% NaCl at 20 degrees C. The results were computed by use of a linear logistic statistical analysis with a critical level of statistical significance of p < 0.05. Sealing improved with time and there was consistently better sealing in the first months without varnish, but after 1 year this was not significant. The low-copper amalgam recorded better sealing than the high-copper amalgam. A calcium hydroxide base promoted sealing but base-free cavities performed second best. Sealing declined with 1 year if Dycal base was used. Zinc-containing bases exhibited poor sealing, even those containing tin. Base solubility can improve sealing in calcium-containing bases but not in zinc-containing bases.

Evaluation of the apical seal of amalgam retrofillings with the use of a root canal sealer interface.

The apical seal of amalgam retrograde fillings was evaluated in 86 extracted teeth. The experimental groups included retrofillings of amalgam alone, amalgam with a cavity varnish interface, and amalgam with a root canal sealer interface. After a 3-month immersion of the teeth in Higgins ink and subsequent clearing process, statistical analysis of ink penetration measurements showed significantly less leakage (p < 0.001) around amalgam retrofillings when using a root canal sealer as an interface between the retrograde cavity preparation and the condensed amalgam.

Reaction time, impulse speed, overall synaptic delay and number of synapses in tactile reaction neuronal circuits of normal subjects and thinner sniffers.

In control subjects, warned auditory reaction time (RT) for a given effector organ was less than the warned visual RT for the same organ. The RT of the circuits between eye or ear or sites of tactile stimulation (SOS) and the index fingers were significantly shorter than that between eye or ear or the same SOS and the right or left big toes. The greater the distance between the SOS and the brain the longer the RT of the response by a given effector organ. The overall signal speed (OASS) from the neck to the index finger was less than that from the neck to the big toe. The OASS from the neck to a given effector was less than that from the toe to the same effector. Sensory nerve impulse speed was slightly faster than motor nerve impulse speed. The overall synaptic delay and estimated number of synapses (ENOS) of simple tactile reaction neuronal circuits of normal subjects did not significantly vary with site of tactile stimulation or effector organ. The mean number of synapses of various tactile reaction neuronal circuits of normal subjects was estimated to be between 69 and 77, which is far greater than the number of synapses in the touch-tactile and motor pathways combined. The overall synaptic delay in the tactile reaction neuronal circuits between SOS and the left and right big toes were significantly lower in sniffers than in control subjects. This may be due to a decrease in either the average synaptic delay, the number of synapses, or both in the tactile reaction neuronal circuits between sites of stimulation and big toes (but not index fingers) in sniffers.

In vitro evaluation of two microleakage detection tests.

Two microleakage detection tests were evaluated to compare their capabilities for revealing the extent of leakage at the interface between amalgam restorations and tooth structure. Class V cavities were prepared in the buccal surfaces of extracted human canine and premolar teeth and were treated in one of the following ways: no liner or varnish, a copal varnish, or an adhesive resin liner. The cavities were restored with a high-copper single composition spherical amalgam alloy and the specimens thermally cycled. Following storage for 6 months, the teeth were exposed to separate solutions of 45Ca and an ultraviolet fluorescing dye. The teeth were hemisected longitudinally and leakage was evaluated by determining the degree of penetration of the two tracers at the occlusal and gingival margins. Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference between the two leakage techniques (P less than 0.05). The radioisotope test generally indicated a greater degree of leakage than did the ultraviolet dye test.
