The 1975, 1980, and 1986 sample surveys from the National Institute of Mental Health were used to predict the type of inpatient psychiatric facility where people were admitted. Predictors used were demographics (age, gender, race, marital status, and education), psychiatric diagnosis, and insurance status (primary payment source). A discriminant analysis revealed that insurance status was the most important discriminator in predicting hospital type. State hospitals were more likely to care for patients with little or no resources, whereas private hospitals cared for patients with some form of insurance. The authors discuss the implications of insurance status and access to psychiatric treatment.

Using data on 975 elderly persons from the 1990 Health Supplements to the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, we describe the predictors of expenditures for dental services. Forty-four percent of elderly persons reported using some dental services within a year. Thirteen percent had private dental insurance, and 8% had a separate dental policy. The average total expenditure for those who used any dental services was $378, 88% of which was paid out-of-pocket. Persons with a separate dental insurance policy, younger and better educated persons, and those with greater financial resources were more likely to use dental services.

We examine twelve-year trends in the Latino uninsured population by ethnic subgroup and immigration status. From 1993 to 1999, most Latino subgroups, particularly Puerto Ricans, had large decreases in Medicaid coverage. For some subgroups these were offset by increases in employer coverage, but not for Mexicans, resulting in a four-percentage-point increase in their uninsured population. During 2000-2004, Medicaid/SCHIP expansions benefited most subgroups and mitigated smaller losses in employer coverage. However, during 1993-2004, the percentage of noncitizen Latinos lacking coverage increased by several percentage points. This was attributable to Medicaid losses during 1993-1999 and losses in employer coverage during 2000-2004.
