[Contempt and hatred: sociologic indications for an approach to current juvenile violence].

Violence is present in all forms of society that impose limits that must not be surpassed (murder, incest ...) in order for social life to be possible. But these limits are always broken. Youth are, in this respect, in a difficult situation, especially those from marginalized areas. Victims of contempt and exclusion, they react through violent acts; to violence experienced because of excessive constraints in school, they respond with violence. This juvenile violence calls for macro-social responses that return credibility to the institutional system often corrupt and responsible for hidden social violence. It also calls for micro-social actions, especially within the community. These actions may allow for awareness of violence generating phenomena, the discovery of obstacles to exercising rights, and the make-up of conflicts and their resolution in negotiation procedures.

Perception, memory and pathological identification as precipitating factors in parental attacks on children.

This paper examines the origins and the importance of pathological identification by the parent of the child who was maltreated or is at risk of maltreatment. The understanding of these identifications suggests methods of effective preventive action without recourse to the undesirable practice of removing the child from the home, other than in exceptional circumstances. Brief case history vignettes illustrate the clinical application of this approach.

Grudge and the hysteric.

Our understanding of the bizarre sexuality of the hysteric began with Freud's discovery that its roots lay in infantile sexuality, but since then little knowledge has been added. This paper argues that the hysteric in early childhood deals with the failures of good-enough mothering and care by precocious sexual development, which is accompanied by an inability to be nurtured by any loving relationship. Sexual solutions to problems prove, for the hysteric, temporary, and inevitably end in grudge and complaints, as the love-object misreads the hysteric's gestures as expressing sexual wishes and desires instead of as a symbolic body language for care and protection. The author briefly examines the nature of the deprivation in childhood and the reason that the hysteric is such a promising yet recalcitrant patient, and offers a case illustration.

Psychotherapy and the aged.

Psychotherapy for ageing or old people is defined and described, and certain theoretical and practical aspects are dealt with. Special emphasis is laid on the direction and movement of a series of therapeutic encounters, so as to make clear, even to the non-specialist reader, what the patient might expect to gain from these.
