Achieving quality esthetic dentistry and integrated comprehensive care with new generation techniques and materials.

BACKGROUND: Prosthodontics is the dental specialty responsible for diagnosis, rehabilitation and maintenance of patients with complex clinical conditions involving missing or deficient teeth and/or craniofacial tissues. The essence of the specialty is expert treatment planning. OVERVIEW/LITERATURE REVIEWED: In recent years, new approaches and technology have been introduced as a result of research performed in universities and by industry. The field of prosthodontics continues to evolve owing to a better understanding of the biology of the oral cavity and the introduction of new techniques and improved biomaterials. Improvements in periodontal and oral surgical techniques, implant procedures and materials, esthetic restorative materials, and jaw tracking recorders and articulators have led to enhanced functional and esthetic oral and maxillofacial prostheses. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: The complexities of today's technical and clinical procedures and the higher expectations for more esthetically pleasing dentistry by the general patient population have placed a premium on teamwork involving general dentists, specialists and dental technicians.

Finn Brudevold's laboratory: the Forsyth Institute, 1958-1986.

The years 1930-1931 ushered in the initial group of Rockefeller Fellows at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry the first time in this country that an organized attempt was made in a university framework to formally train dental researchers. A 2001 article published in the JOURNAL OF THE MASSACHUSETTS DENTAL SOCIETY--"A Research Model for Dental Science" (Vol. 49, No. 4, pages 30-31)--examined the preliminary phase of this innovative project. One of the early members, Norwegian émigré Dr. Finn Brudevold, arrived at the Forsyth Dental Infirmary for Children in 1958. His mission was to start a small laboratory in inorganic chemistry and continue his research on the causation and prevention of dental decay. For almost 30 years, Brudevold's ever-expanding laboratory acted as a template for the far-reaching discipline now known as sialogy, the biological laws of saliva.

[Plastic skull for practical education in stomatological radiology].

A plasticmodell of a skull manufactured by Deutsches Hygienemuseum Dresden, German Democratic Republic, was produced with Ba2SO4, natural teeth and special constructions for the practical training of students in Stomatological Radiology. Examples show the radiographed x-ray-photograms.

[Follow-up study of accuracy of fit of crowns, prepared for phantom head under practice conditions].

Mesial, distal, oral and vestibular measurement of fissure spaces in 39 crowns and 51 bridges (divided with interlock-connection) made in the context of propedeutic instruction showed a mean marginal discrepancy of 62-90 microns in a range of 30-160 microns. A simple method to evaluate the fissure space was described. In actually discussion the results would be helpful to determine criterions for quality on fixed restorations.

Predicting esthetics of laminate veneers without tooth preparation.

High expectations may contribute to stress in the patient and dentist during dental treatment. Esthetic and restorative results can be predicted for laminate veneers by using a powder blower and a liquid dispenser preoperatively to form self-cured resin veneers. Trial veneers are formed in a precision "salt and pepper" technique that conserves materials and time. The trial veneers are placed, without tooth preparation, on the treatment site so that the patient can preview the planned treatment and so that the dentist can explain proposed treatment in a reversible procedure. This may circumvent misunderstandings between dentist and patient and allow the consideration of alternate treatment plans.
