In July 1995, Operation Prompt Return was mounted to set up a facility on Wake Island in the mid-Pacific to process 158 illegal emigrants and return them to China. The deployed medical team screened and examined the travelers and the ship's crew. Initial major problems consisted of skin rashes, dental diseases, and signs of physical abuse. Subsequently, urogenital complaints, musculoskeletal pain, and newer cases of scabies were evaluated and treated. Problems relating to planning and provision of medical care to migrants were discussed and solutions were suggested.
Plants that use fog as an important water-source frequently have a rosette growth habit. The performance of this morphology in relation to fog interception has not been studied. Some first-principles from physics predict that narrow leaves, together with other ancillary traits (large number and high flexibility of leaves, caudices, and/or epiphytism) which constitute the "narrow-leaf syndrome" should increase fog-interception efficiency. This was tested using aluminum models of rosettes that differed in leaf length, width and number and were exposed to artificial fog. The results were validated using seven species of Tillandsia and four species of xerophytic rosettes. The total amount of fog intercepted in rosette plants increased with total leaf area, while narrow leaves maximized interception efficiency (measured as interception per unit area). The number of leaves in the rosettes is physically constrained because wide-leafed plants can only have a few blades. At the limits of this constraint, net fog interception was independent of leaf form, but interception efficiency was maximized by large numbers of narrow leaves. Atmospheric Tillandsia species show the narrow-leaf syndrome. Their fog interception efficiencies were correlated to the ones predicted from aluminum-model data. In the larger xerophytic rosette species, the interception efficiency was greatest in plants showing the narrow-leaf syndrome. The adaptation to fog-harvesting in several narrow-leaved rosettes was tested for evolutionary convergence in 30 xerophytic rosette species using a comparative method. There was a significant evolutionary tendency towards the development of the narrow-leaf syndrome the closer the species grew to areas where fog is frequently available. This study establishes convergence in a very wide group of plants encompassing genera as contrasting as Tillandsia and Agave as a result of their dependence on fog.
Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a noninvasive optical technique to monitor cerebral oxygen saturation at the bedside. Despite its applicability, NIRS has had limited clinical use because of concerns about accuracy, noted by intersubject variability in slope and intercept of the line between NIRS- and weighted-average arterial-cerebrovenous saturation (SMO2). This study evaluated transcranial optical pathlength and cerebral hemoglobin concentration as sources for this intersubject variability. Experiments were performed in an in vitro brain model and in piglets. Optical pathlength and cerebral hemoglobin concentration were measured by time-resolved spectroscopy (TRS). NIRS and TRS were recorded in the model, as perfusate blood saturation was varied (0%-100%) at several hemoglobin concentrations, and in piglets, as SMO2 was varied (15%-90%) before and after hemodilution. In the model, hemoglobin concentration significantly altered the NIRS versus blood saturation line slope and intercept, as well as optical pathlength. In piglets (before hemodilution), there was significant intersubject variability in NIRS versus SMO2 line slope (0.73-1.4) and intercept (-24 to 36) and in transcranial optical pathlength (13.4-16 cm) and cerebral hemoglobin concentration (0.58-1.1 g/dL). By adjusting the NIRS algorithm with optical pathlength or cerebral hemoglobin measurements, intersubject variability in slope (0.9-1.2) and intercept (-9 to 18) decreased significantly. Hemodilution significantly changed NIRS versus SMO2 line slope and intercept, as well as transcranial optical pathlength and cerebral hemoglobin concentration (before versus after hemodilution: slope 0.9 vs 0.78, intercept 13 vs 19, pathlength 13.9 vs 15.6 cm, cerebral hemoglobin 0.98 vs 0.73 g/dL). By adjusting the NIRS algorithm with the cerebral hemoglobin measurements, slope and intercept remained unchanged by hemodilution. These data indicate that intersubject variability in NIRS originates, in part, from biologic variations in transcranial optical pathlength and cerebral hemoglobin concentration. Instruments to account for these factors may improve NIRS cerebral oxygen saturation measurements.
In this work, we investigated processing methods to obtain subgrain sizes from electron backscattered diffraction data using samples of experimentally deformed calcite (CaCO(3)) polycrystals. The domain boundary hierarchy method, based on area measurements of domains enclosed by boundaries larger than a given misorientation angle, was applied to these calcite samples and was found to be limited by: (i) topological problems; (ii) undersampling of large grains; and (iii) artefacts caused by nonindexing. We tested two alternative methods that may reduce the problems: (i) the measured linear intercept hierarchy method, based on measurements of linear intercept between boundaries having larger misorientations than a given minimum angle; and (ii) the calculated linear intercept hierarchy method, based on the total length of boundaries having misorientations larger than a given minimum angle. The measured linear intercept hierarchy method was found to produce results more representative for the microstructure than the calculated linear intercept hierarchy method, because the calculated linear intercept hierarchy method has a significant uncertainty related to the grid-based nature of the measurements. Preliminary results on calcite suggest that the measured linear intercept hierarchy method is related, in a complex way, to deformation conditions such as stress, strain and temperature as well as to the characteristics of subgrain rotation and grain boundary migration processes.
