A dog with four patent Taenia hydatigena was placed at a fixed site on a pasture for 50 days. The spread of the eggs was determined by grazing lambs for 10 days on various plots, and counting the cysts present at autopsy. Some 'wild' eggs were detected on the pasture before the dog was introduced. Nevertheless, a marked divergence from randomness was detected in the cyst counts of lambs grazed within 80 metres of the kennel but not beyond from 10-20 and 40-50 days after the dog had been introduced. The main egg clusters remained within a radius of 25 metres.
In order to evaluate therapeutic efficacy of praziquantel against cysticercosis in pigs caused by the 'Taiwan Taenia' 16 small-ear miniature pigs were each fed with 10,000 or 30,000 eggs. Twelve pigs were treated with praziquantel: three were given 100 mg kg-1 on one day, three were given 100 mg kg-1 daily for three days, and six were given 100 mg kg-1 daily for five days. Four pigs were used as untreated controls. The cure rates observed were 33.3% in the pigs treated for one day, and 100% in the pigs treated for three or five days.

DNA/DNA hybridization and sequencing of rDNA (partial 18S rDNA and ITS1) were used to investigate phylogenetic relationships among seven host-specific Bothriocephalus parasites (Cestoda, Pseudophyllidae). The small nucleotide divergence between six of the seven bothriocephalids suggests that isolation and differentiation of Bothriocephalus lineages in the different host species probably occurred recently and over a short time span. Comparison of the molecular phylogeny of the parasite species to the phylogeny of their hosts (teleostean fishes) revealed little congruence between the branching patterns of hosts and parasites, suggesting that bothriocephalids have not cospeciated with their hosts.

Three-week Mesocestoides corti infections of C57BL/6 mice showed significantly raised parasite counts in animals with a targeted knockout of the IL-4 gene. By contrast, antibody neutralization of IL-5 and inhibition of eosinophilia had no effect on parasite numbers. In SV/129 mice, knockout of the interferon gamma receptor and inducible nitric oxide synthase genes had no significant effect on parasite counts. In IL-4(-/-)mice the dominant IgG1 antibody response was dramatically reduced, with a concomitant increase in IgG2a/b responses and a partial twofold reduction in IgM and IgE responses. We conclude that murine resistance to M. corti is dependent on IL-4, but occurs independently of IL-5 and eosinophils. This provides the first direct evidence for IL-4 mediated immunity of mice to infection with a tissue-dwelling platyhelminth.
