Population redistribution policies and development planning in the Pacific Basin: rationale and objectives.

"In this article, the general arguments about population redistribution are discussed within the context of [Pacific island nations]....A review of circular and permanent population movements in the Pacific Basin reveals the complexity of the networks of relations of multilocal people....A range of possible population policies to accomodate and correct migration problems is discussed. An analysis of the national development plans of Fiji, Kiribati, and the Solomon Islands illustrates the need for sustainable development and population redistribution policies which explicitly address: (a) nation-building with regional equity; (b) population growth control and native supremacy; and (c) population redistribution with ecological sustainability." Comments are included by A. Crosbie Walsh (pp. 102-6) and Antony J. Dolman (pp. 107-11).

Economic and political restructuring and the sustainability of migrant remittances: the case of Western Samoa.

This study examines the importance of remittances from emigrants to the economies of Pacific island states. The author considers two basic questions: "Are there enough island-born or island-linked people in the labor forces of industrialized countries to generate a given level of remittances to the island states?...[and] Will those who are able to sustain the flow be willing to? In this paper I examine the case of remittance flows between New Zealand and Western Samoa."

How many Samoans? An evaluation of the 1980 census count of Samoans in the United States.

"This paper reports the results of applying demographic methods, in combination with assumptions about vital rates and migration, to estimate the total Samoan population of the United States in 1980." The authors conclude that the most plausible estimate of the Samoan population in the United States in 1980 is between 46,600 and 50,800. These estimates are 10 to 17.5 percent higher than the census count.
