The use of barium salts of ribose 1-phosphate and 2-deoxyribose-1-phosphate as the donors of the carbohydrate part of the required nucleosides in the reaction of enzymatic glycosylation of heterocyclic bases was studied. It was shown that application of indicated substrates in the synthesis of modified nucleosides-ribothymidine and bromovinyldeoxyuridine, catalyzed by the nucleoside phosphorylases from Escherichia coli BM-11, leads to the 96-98% yield of required products even at an equimolar ratio of original pentose 1-phosphates and heterocyclic bases in the reaction mixtures.

In order to validate a rodent biochemical model of delayed neurotoxicity of organophosphates (OP) inhibition of rat and hen brain neurotoxic esterase (NTE) by some dichlorovinyl phosphates and phosphonates was studied in vitro and in vivo. It was shown that compounds investigated exhibited the similar inhibitory potency to NTE from both species in vitro, in addition rat and hen NTE showed the same sensitivity to variation of the structure of OP inhibitors. A good correlation was found between pI50 estimated with enzymes from rat and hen trains: r2 = 0.951, n = 18, p < or = 0.05. NTE activities were also measured in rat and hen brains after acute administration of various dosages of potent axonopathic compound dipropyldichlorovinyl phosphate. The results obtained indicate that difference in species susceptibility to neurotoxic action of OP, in particular the absence of ataxia in rats, is not caused by difference in target enzyme sensitivity to axonopathic organophosphates.

Alkylation reactions of phosphorus oxyacids (i.e. phosphoric acid, phosphorous acid, hypophosphorous acid) were examined by means of several methods for the synthesis of the corresponding esters. These reactions were applied to the synthesis of oligonucleotide having phosphotriester bond or phosphonate diester bond.
Two hundred twenty permanent young molars in 60 children aged 8 to 13 years received only one application of a light-activated resinous sealant. The retention rate was assessed 6 and 12 months later. The teeth were divided into 2 groups of 110 each. In one of the groups the pits and fissures were etched with 37% phosphoric acid before being sealed (group 1); in the other (group 2) these areas were etched with 10% maleic acid. The retention rate of group 1 was 98.4% at 6 months, and 96.8% at 12 months. Group 2 had retention rates of 97.5% at 6 months and 95% at 12 months. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in the two test periods, nor were there differences in the same group at the different periods.
The aim of this investigation was to establish a regime for orthodontic bonding to feldspathic porcelain, which ensures adequate bond strength (6-8 MPa) with minimal damage on debond and consisted of an ex vivo investigation measuring the effects of porcelain surface preparation and thermocycling on shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets. One-hundred-and-twenty feldspathic porcelain bonded crown surfaces were divided into 12 equally-sized groups to assess the effects of: (1) glaze removal, (2) application of hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid, or omission of acid treatment, and (3) silane priming upon the bond strength of premolar brackets bonded with Right-on (TM) composite resin adhesive. Specimens were subjected to thermocycling and then to shear debonding forces on an Instron machine. Removal of the porcelain glaze, or use of hydrofluoric acid, prior to bonding were found to be unnecessary to secure the target bond strength. Hydrofluoric acid application was associated with increased porcelain surface damage. Thermocycling caused a significant reduction in shear bond strength to porcelain (P < 0*001). The best regime for orthodontic bonding to feldspathic porcelain was to apply phosphoric acid for 60 seconds, and prime with silane prior to bonding. Usually the porcelain surfaces could be repolished. Refereed Paper
We followed amino acid composition, sugar content, immunological reactivity and thermal coacervation of elastin-derived peptides in order to show whether the preparation procedure influenced the properties. Insoluble elastin was prepared by alkaline hydrolysis (N-elastin) or cyanogen bromide cleavage (C-elastin) of bovine ligamentum nuchae. The insoluble elastins were solubilized in oxalic acid, phosphoric acid or trifluoroacetic acid. The differences in properties were found in the case of trifluoroacetic hydrolysis only in comparison with soluble elastin-derived peptides prepared by oxalic or phosphoric acids hydrolysis. Trifluoroacetic acid probably breaks down the structure markedly including the antigenic determinants, which results in a low reactivity with antibodies. The ability of these peptides to form coacervates is also decreased.
Vegetable oils were investigated to evaluate their potential to act as the sole carbon source for production of cephamycin C in shake and jar-fermentor cultures. Soybean oil was the best carbon source for cephamycin C production. Bioautography and HPLC analyses showed that cephamycin C was exclusively produced even when soybean oil was used as the sole carbon source. The optimal pH and initial concentration of soybean oil was 7.5 and 7 g/l, respectively. Both pH and the pH-control agent affected cephamycin C production, and among phosphoric acid, acetic acid and sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid was associated with the best production. Soybean oil was slowly consumed after the soluble nitrogen source was consumed. When the initial soybean oil concentration was 7 g/l, cephamycin C production was maximal, 2.0 g/l, which was twice as high as that from starch. The product yield from soybean oil was 4.7 times higher than that from starch. These results show that vegetable oils, which are cheaper than other carbon sources, could be used as the sole carbon source in the production of antibiotics.
The activities of various concentrations of 4 acidity regulators (anhydrous citric acid, phosphoric acid, malic acid and lactic acid) used in food industries in Iraq was assayed using the Salmonella/microsome mutagenicity assay. None of the samples was mutagenic in the absence or in the presence of S9 to any of the tester strains of Salmonella typhimurium.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the surface morphology and the permeability of dentine after different acid treatments: polyacrylic acid, maleic acid, phosphoric acid and saline solution as control. Dentine permeability was expressed as hydraulic conductance. All the acid treatments removed the smear layer and increased the dentine permeability.
Titanium implants have a thin oxide surface layer. The properties of this oxide layer may explain the good biocompatibility of titanium implants. Anodic oxidation results in a thickening of the oxide film, with possible improved biocompatability of anodized implants. The aim of the present study was twofold: (1) firstly, to characterize the growth behaviour of galvanostatically prepared anodic oxide films on commercially pure (c.p.) titanium and (2) secondly, to establish a better understanding of the electroche0mical growth behaviour of anodic oxide on commercially pure titanium (ASTM grade 1) after changes of the electrochemical parameters in acetic acid, phosphoric acid, calcium hydroxide, and sodium hydroxide under galvanostatic anodizing mode. The oxide thickness was measured by Ar sputter etching in Auger Electron spectroscopy (AES) and the colours were estimated by an L*a*b* system (lightness, hue and saturation) using a spectrophotometer. In the first part of our study, it was demonstrated that the interference colours were useful to identify the thickness of titanium oxide. It was also found that the anodic forming voltages with slope (dV/dt) in acid electrolytes were higher than in alkaline electrolytes. Each of the used electrolytes demonstrates an intrinsically specific growth constant (nm/V) in the range of 1.4--2.78 nm/V. In the second part of our study we found, as a general trend, that an increase of electrolyte concentration and electrolyte temperature respectively decreases the anodic forming voltage, the anodic forming rate (nm/s) and the current efficiency (nm.cm(2)/C), while an increase of the current density and the surface area ratio of the anode to cathode increase the anodic forming voltage, the anodic forming rate and the current efficiency. The effects of electrolyte concentration, electrolyte temperature, and agitation speed were explained on the basis of the model of the electrical double layer.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Various methods of rotary preparation and conditioning of teeth affect surface topography and may affect the retention of dental restorations. PURPOSE: This study microscopically evaluated dentin surfaces prepared by different rotary instruments and etched using several types of acid etchants that have been deemed suitable dentin conditioners. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Occlusal surfaces of 35 extracted human molars were ground wet with 320-grit silicon carbide paper to the depth of the central groove and then prepared with diamond (n = 5) and finishing burs (n = 30). Five specimens from each group were used for SEM evaluation of mechanical preparation effects. Dentin specimens (n = 5) prepared with finishing burs were then etched with 1 of 5 etchants (25% polyacrylic acid, 10% phosphoric acid, 10% citric acid, 20% lactic acid, or 32% phosphoric acid) for 10 seconds. Specimens were critical-point dried and freeze fractured for SEM analysis. RESULTS: Diamond rotary instruments created more undulating surfaces than finishing burs. Fine grooves were observed running perpendicular to undulations and parallel to the direction of instrument rotation. Specimens prepared with finishing burs exhibited a smooth surface interrupted by only a slight granularity. The amorphous smear layer was partially removed after the application of 25% polyacrylic acid (pH 1.53), but all dentinal tubules contained plugs. The number of dentin tubules containing plug material and the amount of material in the tubules decreased noticeably with 10% phosphoric acid (pH 0.86), and the dentin surface had an appearance similar to the specimen etched with 10% citric acid (pH 1.70). The surfaces treated with 20% lactic acid (pH 1.40) produced a clearly etched surface with minimal demineralization. Etching of dentin with 32% phosphoric acid (pH 0.16) revealed significant changes in dentin with the evidence of increased tubule diameter. CONCLUSION: Differences related to the method of instrumentation were found in the surface characteristics of dentin. The degree of smear layer removal was related to the pH of the acid etchant.
Many dental adhesive systems now rely on simultaneous etching of enamel and dentin. Instead of the traditional 35-40% phosphoric acid, new etchants (including 10% maleic acid, 10% phosphoric acid, and oxalic acid/aluminum nitrate) are used. This in vitro study determined the shear bond strengths of resin composite to enamel which was etched with these agents according to manufacturers' instructions. The control etchant, 35% phosphoric acid, gave a mean bond strength of 24.5 MPa. 10% maleic acid and 10% phosphoric acid had significantly lower shear bond strengths (13.2 MPa). Gluma 1 & 2 Conditioner (oxalic acid/aluminum nitrate) had a mean bond strength of 6.3 MPa, which was significantly less than the other etchants. Bond strengths for each etchant were not affected by the type of unfilled resin used.
Captopril, a well-known angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, is widely used for treatment of arterial hypertension. Recent studies suggest that it may also act as a scavenger of free radicals because of its thiol group. Therefore, the present study describes a rapid, sensitive and relatively simple method for the detection of captopril in biological tissues with reverse-phase HPLC. Captopril was first derivatized with ThioGlo 3 [3H-Naphto[2,1-b]pyran,9-acetoxy-2-(4-(2,5-dihydro-2,5-dioxo-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)phenyl-3-oxo-)]. It was then detected by fluorescence-HPLC using an Astec C(18) column as the stationary phase and a water:acetonitrile:acetic acid:phosphoric acid mixture (50:50; 1 mL/L acids) as the mobile phase (excitation wavelength, 365 nm; emission wavelength, 445 nm). The calibration curve for captopril was linear over a range of 10-2500 nM and the coefficient of variation acquired for the within- and between-run precision for captopril was 0.5 and 3.8%, respectively. The detection limit of captopril with this method was found to be 200 fmol/20 microL injection volume. Its relative recovery from biological samples was determined to the range from 93.3 to 105.3%. Based on these results, we believe that our method is advantageous for captopril determination.
