Ascites tumor invasion of mouse peritoneum studied by high-voltage electron microscope stereoscopy.

Interaction of Krebs-2 and Ehrlich tetraploid cells with NYLR/Nya mouse peritoneum mesothelium and penetration of basal lamina and elastic reticulum were studied. Invasion of abdominal viscera was rare. Invading cells had a shrunken nucleus and cytoplasm like the "dark cells" of hyperplastic epithelia. High-voltage electron microscope stereoscopy showed that invasive cells pass through small holes in the elastic reticulum by adherence to the reticulum and by constriction of the cells. High voltage electron microscopy stereoscopy of collagen fibers near tumor cells indicated that fragmentation and loss of collagen is minimal. Rapid progression by ascites transfer appears to produce anchorage-independent cells adapted to ascites fluid growth, but new selection steps must be adopted to concentrate strongly invasive subpopulations.

[Liver function in cows with traumatic inflammation of the reticulum and peritoneum after rumenotomy].

The studies resulted from clinical observations recorded earlier on the basis of which it was found that traumatic inflammation of the reticulum and peritoneum Uzco is accompanied by liver lesion. Basing on the animal material (72 cows) collected in the area of the Station's activity at Busko-Zdrój, the diagnostic value of the selected laboratory liver tests was estimated to be utilized in diagnosing the damage of this organ as well as in the treatment of cows after rumenotomy. The studies showed that for these purposes the determination of total bilirubin and its fraction, the concentration of which in cows of the Uzco breed before the operation exceeded considerably their normal level, is of highest value. In the postoperation period lasting about 10 days, the level of total bilirubin constantly decreased. The determination of total cholesterol and protein was found to be of slightly lower value. Among the opacity tests the iodic one is of highest value in determinations of liver parenchyma lesions in cows with the Uzco. The decrease in the level of total bilirubin and its fraction as well as the decrease in the number of positive reactions to iodic test in the postoperaton period have been recognized as prognostically favourable symptom.

Malignant localized fibrous tumor of the peritoneum arising in its benign counterpart.

We report a case of malignant localized fibrous tumor (LFT) of the peritoneum in a 78-year-old man. The tumor was pedunculated and the malignant area completely surrounded by its benign counterpart, forming "a nodule within a nodule" appearance. Histologically, the latter area showed typical features of a benign LFT, while the former fulfilled the criteria of a malignant LFT as defined by England et al.; i.e., one being rich in fibroblastic spindle cells with plump and atypical nuclei, hyalinized stroma and mitotic figures. Immunohistochemically, spindle cells in both portions of the tumor were positively stained for vimentin but completely negative for keratin (AE1/AE3), S-100 protein and desmin. There was a significant increase in proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA)-positive cells in the malignant portion (80%) in comparison with the benign portion (45%). To date, we are not aware of any report on a malignant localized fibrous tumor in association with a benign counterpart. The unique association, therefore, prompted us to report our experience, and suggests the possibility of malignancy developing in the benign localized fibrous tumor.

Evidence for a multifocal origin of papillary serous carcinoma of the peritoneum.

Histopathological evidence suggests that papillary serous carcinoma of the peritoneum (PSCP) may be multifocal in origin. Utilizing a PCR based method to detect tandem repeat polymorphisms in formalin fixed tissue, loss of heterozygosity at eight loci on chromosomes 1, 3, 4, and 17 was studied in six cases of PSCP. Loss of heterozygosity was assessed at between 5 and 11 tumor sites/patient. Allelic losses at 4 loci (1q32-qter, 3p14.3-21.1, 17q12, 17q21.3-23) were noted. Three cases demonstrated a different pattern of allelic loss at various anatomic sites within the same patient. In an additional case, a mutation of the p53 gene, detected by quantitative PCR followed by single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis, was detected in only 2 of 5 tumor sites. The pattern of allelic loss and the mutational pattern of the p53 gene varied at tumor sites within the same patient in 4 of 6 cases of PSCP. These findings are consistent with histopathological evidence that PSCP is multifocal in origin.

[Well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma of the peritoneum: an attenuated malignant tumor. Review of the literature apropos of a case].

The authors present a new case of a well-differentiated papillary mesothelioma of the peritoneum. This is an uncommon tumor which have a slow evolution like a low malignant potential tumor. But, because of its tendency to recurrence, the designation of Well-Differentiated Tumor is better. The diagnosis with others peritoneal tumors is sometimes difficult, especially with the Peritoneal Serous Tumors. Tumor recurrence must be treated by curative surgery. Adjuvant therapy is discussed for the diffuse form.

[Multicystic mesothelioma of the peritoneum].

A case of multicystic peritoneal mesothelioma in a young woman is reported. Tumor consisted of multiple cysts involving the pelvic peritoneum. The cells demonstrated positive staining for keratin peptides, and epithelial membrane antigen. No staining was demonstrable for endothelial markers. The findings are in accord with the proposed mesothelial origin of the neoplasm and can be of help in the differential diagnosis of the other multicystic neoplasm arising in the peritoneal cavity.

Pregnancy associated diffuse malignant fibrous mesothelioma of peritoneum. Immunohistochemical studies of ectopic decidual reaction and concomitant myofibroblastic and mesothelial proliferations.

A case of diffuse proliferations in the peritoneum in a 24-year-old woman several months post partum has been reported. Multinodular growth of myofibroblastic cells without atypia was observed, which predominated and revealed a positive immunohistochemical reaction to muscle-specific actin and vimentin, and dispersed clusters of mesothelial cells showing a positive reaction to cytokeratin and vimentin, with moderate atypia and scarce mitotic figures. On cesarean section the greater omentum contained an ectopic decidua in the form of a nodule. Decidual cells, in part transforming into spindle-shaped cells, showed the presence of desmin. Multifocal proliferation of myofibroblasts, most probably of metaplastic type, concomitant with pregnancy-induced peritoneal deciduosis and diffuse progressive mesothelial proliferations has been identified.

Primary serous papillary carcinoma of the peritoneum: a report of 18 patients.

Eighteen patients with primary papillary serous carcinoma of the peritoneum (PPSCP) were treated at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of the University of Graz between 1980 and 1996. Primary tumours from other sites, particularly the pancreas and ovary, had been excluded. Because of extensive spread of the disease particularly in the upper abdomen, seven of the 18 patients (38%) underwent exploratory laparotomy only. Median overall survival time was 10 months (range 1-28+). This figure reflects the extent of spread of the disease at diagnosis on one hand, and that optimal cytoreductive surgery (residual disease < or = 2 cm) was possible only in six of the 18 patients (33%) on the other. The six patients with optimal cytoreduction had a better survival (range 4+ to 28+ months) than those who underwent less radical surgery. These data indicate, that, similar to primary ovarian cancer, the amount of residual disease may be an important prognostic factor in patients with PPSCP.
