Phase II rehabilitation of the temporomandibular joint dysfunction patient.

Treatment of pain and dysfunction of the craniomandibular apparatus commonly follows one of two courses, not necessarily independent of each other. In many patients, treatment involves both appliance and non-appliance modalities. A thorough and careful diagnostic evaluation of the patient will help the dentist to select the proper modality of treatment. Following successful Phase I therapy, the patient is now prepared for Phase II therapy, a more definitive treatment stage. The purpose of this article is to provide the reader with the rationale and principles underlying the stabilization and rehabilitation direction of Phase II therapy, emphasizing the prosthodontic and orthodontic perspectives.

[Indications and technic of transdental fixation].

Transdental fixation, as closed implant, offers the most favourable preconditions of all dental procedures of implantation. Teeth where the root-crown relation is altered to the detriment of root length, which is held firm in bone, can with its help be made functional. Loosening and premature loss of teeth can be prevented. Further discussed is the indication for this procedure, especially in tooth fractures and luxations as well as the operative steps. Up to now transdental fixation has proved itself although the number of cases and the follow-up time are insufficient to allow final judgment.

[Conservative periodontal therapy and its indication in stomatological general practice].

The term of "conservative periodontal therapy" covers all therapeutical measures with the exception of surgical interventions. Since each periodontal therapy constitutes a complex of various measures, it seems to be more favourable to subdivide it, on principle, into continuous phases, which results in advantages for the methodics of treatment planning and performance. The contents of the hygienizing, correcting and stabilizing phase of periodontal therapy are expressed in words and tables.

[Use of a semi-rigid plastic material: value and possibilities].

The use of semirigid plastic material is shown in its use in orthodontia, in the chair and in the laboratory. The products: vestibular screen, shaped in the mouth, the "bumper" for the correction of fan shaped lower anteriors, tooth positioners which serve to correct slight positional occlusal dysharmonies. The use of this material saves time for the practitioner while it allows to the devices thus obtained to retain their qualities and advantages within their respective indications.
