Broadband multimedia for education.

Over the next five to ten years the accelerating development of computing and broadband networks will lead to a revolution in the ways in which health care is delivered. Patients will spend less time in the great institutions of the tertiary hospitals and the illnesses taking them there will assume a different pattern. The new information technologies will foster the emergence of general practices with a new emphasis on keeping patients in their communities for medical management. Knowledge exchange and delivery--to both patient and practitioner--will therefore become an increasingly important component of the health-care system in the next millennium.

Effectiveness of multimedia reading materials when used with children who are deaf.

The purpose of the study was to assess the relative effectiveness of print, sign, and pictures in the transfer of reading-related information to children who are deaf. By means of personal computers, deaf children were presented CD-ROM-generated stories in four different formats: print only, print plus pictures, print plus sign language, and print plus pictures plus sign. A repeated-measure design was used to analyze participants' reading comprehension performance. Significant differences were found among the four presentation options. One observed phenomenon was that participants would switch from American Sign Language to Signed English when analyzing text. The study findings suggest that presenting stories on CD-ROM with multiple modes of reading cues, such as print, pictures, and sign language, may be an enjoyable and interesting supplement to standard reading practices.

The asthma files: evaluation of a multimedia package for children's asthma education.

Children's knowledge of asthma triggers and the impact on children's knowledge of using 'The Asthma Files', an interactive, educational computer program, were evaluated in this pilot study. Thirty-one children aged between seven and 14 years and diagnosed with asthma were recruited to the study. Ten boys participated in evaluating the triggers section and a questionnaire was used to determine their feelings about the program and retention of information. Children enjoyed using the package and knowledge about asthma triggers increased significantly. 'The Asthma Files' shows promise as an additional tool to augment existing education.

The multimedia power portfolio: creative strategy for core curriculum.

To address today's rapidly changing health care environment, educational programs for students in the health professions must also change by exploring new and innovative ways to better prepare students for their future as members of the health care team. This demand for change in allied health and nursing educational programs comes at a time when institutions of higher education are faced with shrinking funds. Therefore, creative efficient utilization of resources must be a prime consideration when implementing new educational models.

Inappropriate calls to an emergency medical despatch centre via cellular telephones--no impact of a once-only multimedia coverage.

Due to fusions of emergency despatch centres, implementation of computer-aided localization and medical regulation, the despatcher's workload is increasing. We report about one more phenomenon which is needlessly disorganizing alarm centres. Moreover, the unintentional activation of the '100' ('112') alarm centre continued to increase even after a once-only media campaign.

Telemedicine in the Malaysian Multimedia Super Corridor: towards personalized lifetime health plans.

The Malaysian Telemedicine initiative advocates a paradigm shift in healthcare delivery patterns by way of implementing a person-centred and wellness-focused healthcare system. This paper introduces the Malaysian Telemedicine vision, its functionality and associated operational conditions. In particular, we focus on the conceptualisation of one key Telemedicine component i.e. the Lifetime Health Plan (LHP) system--a distributed multimodule application for the periodic monitoring and generation of health-care advisories for all Malaysians. In line with the LHP project, we present an innovative healthcare delivery info-structure--LifePlan--that aims to provide life-long, pro-active, personalised, wellness-oriented healthcare services to assist individuals to manage and interpret their health needs. Functionally, LifePlan based healthcare services are delivered over the WWW, packaged as Personalised Lifetime Health Plans that allow individuals to both monitor their health status and to guide them in healthcare planning.
