Effectiveness of one-to-one health education in the home.

HEALTH education conventionally takes one of two forms, a mass campaign to the whole population using the media, or an approach to members of chosen at-risk groups, through individual or small group sessions. The following study explores the efficacy of one-to-one education of the whole adult population, at risk or not, by visiting a random sample of them in their homes and giving them information on one of four relevant topics, adapting the style and content to the individual's needs and interests. The survey therefore tests the technique of a flexible, person-orientated approach to health education.

Survey of accredited master of public health (MPH) programs with health education concentrations: a resource for strengthening the public health workforce.

The authors designed survey research to assess accredited master of public health (MPH) programs with health education concentrations. A Web-based survey was distributed to program directors and was used to collect characteristics of program faculty, students, graduates, internships, employment, and competency development. Results indicate that students and graduates are diverse; 72% of students complete internships and 61% of graduates work in government or community public health-related agencies; 98% of faculty hold a doctoral degree and 67% have at least one degree from an accredited public health school or program; and 85% of programs build competencies in most of the Institute of Medicine-suggested areas. The authors conclude that accredited MPH programs with a concentration in health education train diverse public health practitioners highly likely to work in a government or community public health agency with competencies to enhance public health.

Health education in the management of diabetes at the primary health care level: is there a gender difference?

We examined differences between male and female diabetic patients, as recipients of health education messages provided in a primary health care setting and its implications on the control of the disease. The files of 198 diabetic patients attending a diabetes clinic in Abha, Saudi Arabia were analysed. The results showed that females had significantly higher body mass index and fasting blood sugar levels than men with significantly fewer mean number of health education sessions in the last 12 months. Multiple logistic regression model pointed to the female sex as a significant predictor of poor glycaemic control. The model for females alone showed significantly poorer diabetes control when the number of health education sessions received was less.

Inter-institutional cooperation in allied health educational planning: a case for statewide studies.

During the fall of 1977, a committee of educators and health planners conducted a study to compile data concerning numerous features of allied health education programs in Wisconsin. Such information was seen as vital in enhancing articulation of educational efforts and in implementing policy decisions in the 1980s. The authors of this paper served as project associate and chairman, respectively, for the committee. This paper reviews aspects of the Wisconsin study and the factors which the authors believe necessitate the undertaking of similar studies at this time in other states. Some of the problems in data collection, retrieval, and reporting are summarized. The paper makes suggestions for gaining support and increasing participation in such endeavors among different groups. Important outcomes of the present study are highlighted, and the utility of basic research of this kind is explored briefly.

Deaf community analysis for health education priorities.

Deaf persons' access to health-related information is limited by barriers to spoken or written language: they cannot overhear information; they have limited access to television, radio, and other channels for public information; and the average reading level of Deaf adults is at a 3rd to 4th grade level. However, literature searches revealed no published reports of community analysis focusing specifically on health education priorities for Deaf communities. A seven-step community analysis was conducted to learn the health education priorities in Arizona Deaf communities and to inform development of culturally relevant health education interventions in Deaf communities. The word "Deaf" is capitalized to reflect the cultural perspective of the Deaf community. A 14-member Deaf Health Committee collected data using multimethods that included review of state census data, review of national health priorities, key informant interviews, discussions with key community groups, a mail survey (n = 20), and semistructured interviews conducted in sign language with 111 Deaf adults. The community diagnosis with highest priority for health education was vulnerability to cardiovascular disease (CVD). Following completion of the community analysis, a heart-health education intervention (The Deaf Heart Health Intervention) was developed using a train-the-trainer, community health worker model. If this model proves to be effective in addressing vulnerability to CVD, then a similar protocol could be employed to address other health concerns identified in the Deaf community analysis.

[Health education in the communities. A survey conducted in 1987].

Health education in the primary health sector in Norway is to be strengthened. The recently implemented health service reform (1984) is intended to stimulate the development of health promotion and health education in the municipalities. A survey on municipality involvement in health education was conducted in 1987, and showed a higher level of activity as well as an increased interest in the subject among health professionals. However, when the official policy is compared with the local situation several discrepancies are revealed: no substantial improvement of health education methodology has appeared; cooperation with non-governmental organizations is less than anticipated; and health education is normally not directed at local politics or participation. The chosen strategy for governmental control, characterised by decentralising the decision-making process, has not been found to be sufficient to ensure a stronger emphasis on primary prevention and health promotion. In 1989 a nation-wide five-year programme to stimulate local health promotion was launched by the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs in cooperation with the Directorate of Health. A research programme on health promotion has also been started, administered by the Medical Research Council.

School health education: a foundation for school health programs.

This article describes the present status of health instruction--one of the original three components of the school health program--and suggests ways to improve its effectiveness as one of the eight components of a comprehensive school health promotion program. The article also demonstrates the complexity of the theory base, content, methodology, and outcome expectations of health instruction; a complexity that demands the subject be taught by teachers who are thoroughly prepared and committed to teaching health.

Health education's contributions to public health in the twentieth century: a glimpse through health promotion's rear-view mirror.

A lesson of the first half of the century was that growth and technological development brought new health problems and challenges in their wake, many of which were to prove more intractable to technological fixes than the ones that had been so dramatically fixed before. Massive expansions of resources in support of the extension of these medical fixes resulted in an escalation of costs that had to be reigned in by breaking from the resource-based planning cycle that had prevailed through two eras of expansion. The 1970s ushered in an era of cost containment as the central theme of new policies. They included provisions for health promotion that sought to find new handles on the intractable social and behavioral aspects of the demand for health care resources, especially through primary prevention and building of capacity for community, family, and individual self-management of health problems and programs. Lessons from this era for public health in the next century are considered.
