[Flocculant interaction with native antibiotic solutions. An examination of the mechanism of the process].

Some characteristics of the fermentation broth filtrates, i.e. concentration of the disperse particles and some of their parameters (projected length, area, distribution of the particles along the maximum chord) were determined and estimated after flocculation. It was shown that the floccules were mainly formed as fine colloid admixtures present not only in "turbid", but also in visually transparant solutions. It was found that the mechanism of flocculation was rather complicated and not always similar for different batches of the fermentation broth filtrate: it was, in particular, affected by the electrostatic interactions, the flocculant interaction with inorganic reagents, bridge-forming processes.

[Immunochemical analysis of toxic protein fractions of burned skin].

As a result of hyperimmunization of rabbits with a preparation of toxic protein fractions from burned rat skin an antiserum, containing specific "antiburn" antibodies, was obtained. The antiserum cross-reacted in the precipitation reaction with proteins from normal skin and with macroglobulin fraction of normal blood serum. Purification and estimation of the antibodies specificity were carried out by means of immunoabsorbents, synthesized on the basis of CNBr-Sepharose 4B. The toxin from burned skin was shown to possess both the specific antigenic determinants and those common for the normal properties of skin and serum.

[Study on organ antigens in the gastric mucosa, stomach cancer and its metastases].

Studies of qualitative characteristics of alpha- and beta-antigens in the mucous membrane of the cancer involved or not involved stomach, in gastric concerous tissue and metastases demonstrated the difference in the antigenic structure of normal gastric mucosa and tumor tissues by means of the reaction of precipitation in agar. In the process of tumor development a partial loss of alpha-antigen and the appearance of beta-antigen to be directly dependent on the pronouncement of tumor changes were noted.

[Immunologic reactions in cervical cancer].

Under study were immunological indices--the reaction of microprecipitation (tumor and embryonal antigens) and HRDT (tumor and tuberculine antigens) in 305 patients with cancer of the uterine cervix. It was found that most patients showed impaired immune responses: an increased number of persons with specific antibodies circulating in blood serum and increased hypersensitivity of of delayed type. The percentage of positive reactions of microprecipitation and HRDT increases as the tumor spreads. The methods of combined therapy generally improve immunological indices, however, the process starts 1-3 years following the treatment.

Syphilis seroprevalence among pregnant women and its role as a risk factor for stillbirth in Maputo, Mozambique.

OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the role of current syphilis as a risk factor for foetal death. METHODS: Sera were obtained from 57 women with third trimester foetal death (cases) and 58 women with foetus alive (controls) matched for age and parity. All sera reactive in qualitative Rapid Plasma Reagin (RPR) analyses were tested with serial twofold dilutions to determine endpoint flocculation titres and tested with the micro-haemagglutination assay for Treponema pallidum (MHA-TP). Placental biopsies were sectioned and stained by haematoxylin-eosin and Warthin-Starry for light microscopy. SETTING: Central Hospital, in Maputo, Mozambique, from January 1990 to June 1991. RESULTS: The MHA-TP was reactive in 42% of cases and in 12% of controls (OR = 5.3; 95% CI: 1.9-15.4). The RPR card test was reactive at the dilution of 1.32 or greater in 28% of cases and in 7% of controls. All these results were confirmed by MHA-TP (OR = 5.3; 95% CI: 1.5-15.4). In 9/28 (32%) MHA-TP seroreactive women (7 cases and 2 controls) placental morphological changes indicated syphilitic infection. CONCLUSION: MHA-TP seroreactivity and high titre RPR were associated with stillbirth. Morphological changes presumptive of syphilis infection were found in 32% placentas histologically studied. Syphilis is a risk factor for foetal death in Maputo, Mozambique.

[Serology of typhoid fever in children. I. Capillary flocculation- agglutination. Its specificity in an asymptomatic population and its utility at a pediatric emergency service].

Using a capillary flocculation technique we evaluated serum samples of asymptomatic children for typhoid fever serology. Thirty one (5.16%) of the 600 serum samples tested were positive for a specificity of 95%. To evaluate the sensitivity of the test, serum samples from 36 children with proven typhoid fever and a similar number of control patients were evaluated. The sensitivity of the capillary flocculation test in this group was 100%. The test compared favorably with the Ruiz Castañeda serologic test for typhoid fever.
