Neuropsychological assessment of learning disabilities: a discriminant analysis.

The neuropsychological test scores of 23 learning disabled children were compared with those of a matched population of normal children in the 9-1 to 13-1 age range. All children were administered the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R), a dichotic listening task involving both free and directed recall conditions, a handedness inventory, the Tactile Performance Test and the Category Test from the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery. A multivariate analysis of variance resulted in a significant separation between groups (p less than .001) using these procedures. A stepwise discriminant function analysis revealed that both of the directed dichotic tasks contributed the most of all 13 measures to the significant group separation. In addition, other cognitive tasks found to discriminate normal from learning disabled children include general verbal processes, concept formation, and tactile memory. These findings suggest that the directed dichotic listening procedure and the WISC-R Verbal IQ measure are reasonably valuable clinical tools in the classification of learning disabilities.

Discriminant analysis using the unweighted sum of binary variables: a comparison of model selection methods.

Many clinical decision-making rules are equivalent to linear discriminant functions that involve the unweighted sum of binary variables (SBV). We briefly consider the geometry of this restriction and then propose a number of methods for forward stepwise selection of SBV models. Using a simulation study, we compare the performance of these methods under a wide range of plausible conditions and show that no single method is uniformly superior for selecting models of a fixed size. Factors of general importance in relative method performance are the ratio of sample size to the number of candidate variables and the class-conditional moment structure of the data. We conclude by offering some practical strategies for SBV model construction.

Computer interpreted fetal monitoring data. Discriminant analysis or perinatal data as a model for prediction of neurologic status at one year of age.

Intrapartum fetal monitoring may be useful in discriminating short-term and long-term infant outcomes. In order to develop a model for the classification of infants for measures of outcome and to evaluate the discriminatory value of selected perinatal data, 61 data files, which included computer interpreted fetal electroencephalogram and fetal heart rate, one and five minute Apoar scores, results of neonatal neurologic examination, and results of neurologic examination at one year of age, were submitted to computerized discriminant function analysis. For the classification of infants for neurologic status at one year, using FEEG patterns alone, 64% of the 42 normal infnats and 63% of the 19 abnormal infants were correctly classified. Using intrapartum FEEG and FHR patterns simultaneously, 69% of the 42 normal infants and 63% of the 19 abnormal infants were correctly classified. Combining intrapartum data with postpartum data, including one minute and five minute Apgar scores and neonatal neurologic examinations, 81% of the 42 normal infants and 79% of the 19 abnormal infants could be correctly classified. These results suggest that brain damage may already be present before birth, during labor, and that the risk of abnormal neurologic outcome at one year can be detected for a large percentage of infants using computer interpreted monitoring data during labor.

Identification of protein-coding regions in Arabidopsis thaliana genome based on quadratic discriminant analysis.

A new method (MZEF) for predicting internal coding exons in genomic DNA sequences has been developed. This method is based on a prediction algorithm that uses the quadratic discriminant function for multivariate statistical pattern recognition. With improved feature measures, an Arabidopsis thaliana-specific implementation of MZEF is completed and made available to the plant genome community.

[Computer software and hardware requirements for the differential diagnosis of periodontal diseases using discriminant analysis].

A method of differential diagnosis of parodontium diseases has been devised with the aid of a functional diagnostic system using multichannel rheo- and photoplethysmographs and the deciding rule of discriminant function computation in accordance with an algorithm elaborated. As many as 200 patients have undergone diagnostic examination with the aid of the above-indicated software and hardware system to demonstrate a high probability (92%) of diagnosis.

[Determination of skeletal sex using discriminant analysis of ulnar measurements].

Twelve ulnar measurements take on a series of 80 skeletons (40 male, 40 female) of a known Southern Italian population have been used in 9 combinations to produce discriminant functions for skeletal sex determination. The highest percentage of correct sex classification (95%) was obtained by the association of the minimum circumference and the maximal length. Using other four discriminant functions sex is correctly identified in 93.75% of the sample; in addition two of these functions, obtained by the associations of: minimum circumference and distal epiphyseal breadth, height of proximal articular surface, superior breadth and corio-olecranic distance, allowed to have a sex determination even by fragmented ulnae. For each discriminant function proposed, coefficients of discrimination, section points, male and female centroid and the percentage of misclassification are reported. Practical applications of this method will be certainly of aid in sexual identification in case of forensic interest.
