A study of sleep in the light of Pavlovian conditioned reflexes is proposed. Sleep and its disturbances would appear to reflect different cell metabolic biorhythms, coinciding with intracellular states interdependent of extracellular chemical and physical values and strictly determined by reflexological factors. Reference is made to a personal paper ("Metodica psicoterapica su elementi di cultura cibernetica") for the view that the DNA memorising function, which is responsible for conditioned reflex patterns, genetic metabolism and new valid or non-valid metabolic equilibria via the synapses, could, by conditioning, lead to normal, eurhythmic sleep in terms of the subject's own pattern or that of the statistical mean of the population to which he belongs. Reharmonisation of subjectively disturbed sleep rhythms by new hetero- or autoinduced conditioning is suggested.

The diagnosis of pheochromocytoma is established more frequently in recent years due to better diagnostic possibilities. The aim of this study was to determine whether it is possible to distinguish the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma from mild, moderate and severe hypertension by analysis of symptoms and signs of pheochromocytoma using mathematical methods such as the pattern recognizing procedure before investigation of catecholamines in serum and urine. We retrospectively analysed the presence or absence of 45 symptoms and signs of pheochromocytoma except for investigation of catecholamines in 20 randomly selected patients with mild hypertension (HT), 20 patients with moderate HT, 20 patients with severe HT, and 20 patients with known pheochromocytoma. This procedure improved screening of pheochromocytoma and allowed early detection of the disease on a large scale.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the usefulness, compatibility, and long-term operability of a microelectrode array into the median nerve of the left arm of a healthy volunteer, including perception of feedback stimulation and operation of an instrumented prosthetic hand. SETTING: The study was carried out from March 14 through June 18, 2002, in England and the United States. RESULTS: The blindfolded subject received feedback information, obtained from force and slip sensors on the prosthetic hand, and subsequently used the implanted device to control the hand by applying an appropriate force to grip an unseen object. Operability was also demonstrated remotely via the Internet, with the subject in New York, NY, and the prosthetic hand in Reading, England. Finally, the subject was able to control an electric wheelchair, via decoded signals from the implant device, to select the direction of travel by opening and closing his hand. The implantation did not result in infection or any perceivable loss of hand sensation or motion control. The implant was finally extracted because of mechanical fatigue of the percutaneous connection. Further testing after extraction has not indicated any measurable long-term defects in the subject. CONCLUSIONS: This implant may allow recipients to have abilities they would otherwise not possess. The response to stimulation improved considerably during the trial, suggesting that the subject learned to process the incoming information more effectively.
The biological macromolecule hemoglobin (Hb) represents a reversibly functioning molecular machine. The Hb molecule is engaged in inner or structural work, which is cyclic in nature and is regulated through an exchange with the external milieu, of warmth and matter. The endothermic process of deoxygenation requires an external milieu that gives off warmth and that absorbs oxygen; the exothermic process of oxygenation, on the other hand, requires an external milieu that absorbs warmth and gives up oxygen. The Hb molecule exists in two extreme states: in a signal state for oxygenation and in a target state for deoxygenation. The transition from the signal to the target state occurs via the information process that is coupled to the structural work of the Hb molecule, whereby the absorbed warmth is converted via the structural work, without loss of energy, into the structural energy of the Hb molecule.
The sequential fulfillment of the principle of succession necessarily guides the main steps of the genetic code evolution to be reflected in its structure. The general scheme of the code series formation is proposed basing on the idea of "group coding" (Woese, 1970). The genetic code supposedly evolved by means of successive divergence of pra-ARS's loci, accompanied by increasing specification of recognition capacity of amino acids and triplets. The sense of codons had not been changed on any step of stochastic code evolution. The formulated rules for code series formation produce a code version, similar to the contemporary one. Based on these rules the scheme of pra-ARS's divergence is proposed resulting in the grouping of amino acids by their polarity and size. Later steps in the evolution of the genetic code were probably based on more detailed features of the amino acids (for example, on their functional similarities like their interchangeabilities in isofunctional proteins).
