The influence of Mesocestoides corti on subsequent Angiostrongylus cantonensis infection in mice (C57BL/6 and BALB/c) was assessed. Both strains of mice infected with M. corti demonstrated a peak blood eosinophilia at around 3 weeks post-infection (p.i.). C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice primarily infected with M. corti were given A. cantonensis infection 18 days later, but pre-existing M. corti infection did not affect the recovery of intracranial worms of A. cantonensis at day 21 p.i. BALB/c mice with mixed parasite infections showed low morbidity and mortality as compared with mice singly infected with A. cantonensis and some mice demonstrated a pulmonary migration of intracranial worms. In C57BL/6 mice, intracranial worms were killed and thus all mice survived. C57BL/6 mice with mixed parasite infections failed to resist A. cantonensis reinfection. The blastogenic responses of spleen cells against A. cantonensis antigen were lower in BALB/c than in C57BL/6 mice and mixed parasite infections also resulted in less blastogenic responses against both concanavalin A and A. cantonensis antigen than monoinfection. The recovery of M. corti biomass was significantly higher in mice with mixed parasite infections than mice with monoinfection with M. corti. These data suggest a distinct difference in response to A. cantonensis infection between C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice, and the induction of immunosuppression in both mouse strains following M. corti infection. Blood eosinophilia provoked by M. corti infection is not directly associated with the killing of worms in subsequent A. cantonensis infection.
Especially in an urban environment man and carnivores live closely together, whereby one has to pay attention not only to animal parasites, but also to human pathogenic connections regarding these parasites. Because of the infection risk the animal owner has to be competently informed by his veterinarian. While some cestodes make great demands on hygiene, with others the cycle can be interrupted by consequent diet restrictions. Of all nematodes the stomach worm of the cat is of greater importance as it is easily overlooked because of its small size, is difficult to diagnose and is occurring in our regions with an infestation rate of about 40%. "Larva migrans visceralis" and "Larva migrans cutanea" caused by ascaride and hookworm larvae are important in human medicine and demand therapeutic measures. The contamination of parks, playgrounds and beaches with these parasites caused by carnivores requires a critical evaluation of the human pathogen interests.
Nine antigens, prepared from somatic tissue, cyst fluids or produced during in vitro culture of Echinococcus granulosus, Taenia hydatigena, T ovis or T crassiceps were tested for their suitability for the diagnosis of larval cestode infections in sheep by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The sensitivity and specificity of each of these antigens were assessed using sera from sheep experimentally infected with graded monospecific infections of E granulosus, T hydatigena or T ovis eggs and sera from naturally infected aged sheep. The ability of eight of the antigens to detect the antibody response to larval cestode infection was also compared over 12 months using sera from serial bleedings. Using the ELISA, all of the antigens were able to detect the presence of larval cestodes, even in sheep with only one or two cysts. Over 12 months, the antibody responses were not generally statistically related to the total number of cysts present in the animals. None of the antigens was able to detect specific infections only. The antigen with least non-specific background activity, which consistently detected the highest antibody titres in the sera of all infected animals was the secretion from T ovis worms cultured in vitro, and is, therefore, the antigen of choice for the detection of non-specific infections with larval cestodes in sheep.
