Influence of age on VDU work.

This study was conducted in a data processing centre with intensive work load. The keying speed and typing errors were monitored daily by the management for performance appraisal. The average keying speed of the operator was about 10,000 key strokes per hour. A survey on the subjective symptoms and feelings of fatigue of 68 experienced data entry operators revealed that there was no significant difference as far as physical health was concerned for the 42 young(18-30 years old) and 26 older operators (31-45 years old). However, there was a higher prevalence of visual strain and musculo-skeletal complaints among the older workers. A follow up study on the performance of 22 operators for 5 years showed that there was a significant reverse correlation between age and keying speed, r = 0.74 (p less than 0.01). A lower but significant correlation was also noted for typing errors and age, r = 0.50, (p less than 0.05). These results suggest that age has a significant influence on speed, accuracy and health of VDU operators. When discussing the ergonomics approach to VDU work, attention must be paid to the effect of this factor.

[The working adaptation in visual display terminal (VDT) workers].

The working adaptation in VDT workers was conducted by investigating from two different standpoints: one was to indicate an improvement of working conditions and environments around the VDT workers, evaluating the fundamental data of their visual physiological functions, and the other was to investigate the relation between their performances and production. The results were as followed: 1. Eye strain induced by VDT work was able to take an objective view as accommodative and convergent depression including the tear productive function, followed by making good working conditions. 2. The measurement of eye movement was able to analyze the response time and the response process for the informations indicating on the display, and the concept of recovery time for deteriorated accommodative function was useful to improve the display design. 3. It was suggested that the measurement of visual evoked potential was more simple method to evaluate the workers' attention. 4. The relation between performance and psychological stress and the time course analysis of performance were studied, so that it was given suggestions as to assign suitably the work management and the working design to each VDT worker.

Fatigue of accommodation: changes in accommodation after visual work.

The present study was designed to determine whether classical accommodation theory or dual-innervation accommodation theory best explains the visual fatigue effects of prolonged visual work. The accommodation responses of 20 young male adults were measured, using a laser optometer, while they viewed a near target (30 cm), a far target (6 m), or in total darkness. Measurements were made before and after 1-h fatigue sessions, during which subjects either read monocularly presented slides of text at near or far distances, or remained in darkness. There were no significant changes in near or far target static accommodation as a result of any of the fatigue sessions. Dark focus accommodation shifted inward after the near target viewing task and after prolonged dark viewing. The results are discussed in terms of their implications for research in accommodative fatigue, and their relation to other current research.
