Growth of acellular extrinsic fiber cementum (AEFC) and density of inserting fibers in human premolars of adolescents.

The present study describes for the first time the changes of both AEFC thickness and the numerical density of collagen fibers inserting into AEFC at specified levels and sites of human premolars at different stages of development. The investigation was based on 45 premolars (25 maxillary, 20 mandibular; 25 first and 20 second), extracted from adolescents and young adults. All teeth were free of disease and presented with roots developed from 30-100% of their final length. They were prefixed in Karnovsky's fixative, decalcified in EDTA and subdivided into about 14 slices each, cut from mesial and distal root surfaces, vertical to and along the root axis. The slices were postfixed in OsO4, embedded in Epon and cut for light-microscopic study. AEFC thickness (4086 measurements) and the density of the collagenous fiber fringe (454 counts) inserting in AEFC were measured at 1, 3, 5 and 7 mm apical to the cementoenamel junction. The data obtained showed: AEFC thickness increased with age and varied between 0 and 57.5 microns. Between 9 and 17 years, cervical AEFC thickness increased in maxillary first premolars from an average of 5 to 30 microns, and in mandibular second premolars from 6 to 20 microns, i.e., AEFC grew at approximately the same rate as later in life. Depending on the differences in tooth development, AEFC on maxillary first premolars became thicker than that on mandibular second premolars. Due to the corono-apically decreasing gradient of AEFC development, its increase in mid-root regions lagged behind that in cervical regions of all teeth in people younger than about 14 yr.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Crayfish muscle fiber: spike electrogenesis in fibers with long sarcomeres.

Most of the muscle fibers in the walking legs of the crayfish Procambarus clarkii generate only graded electrical responses. However, some fibers in extensor muscles of the carpopodite have long sarcomeres, about 10 micrometers in length, and generate overshooting spikes that have conduction velocities of 0.3 meter per second. The spikes induce twitch contractions.

Genomic organisation and chromosomal assignment of ODF2 (outer dense fiber 2), encoding the main component of sperm tail outer dense fibers and a centrosomal scaffold protein.

ODF2 (outer dense fiber 2) was first described as the main protein component of the sperm tail cytoskeleton, the outer dense fibers, but was shown recently to be a component of the centrosomal scaffold in chicken. In mouse two related ODF2 cDNA clones were isolated which have been suggested to be most likely the result of alternative splicing. We show here the exon/intron organisation of mouse ODF2 and demonstrate that alternative splicing results in related cDNA sequences and most likely explains, at least partially, the highly complex protein pattern detected on Western blots. ODF2 was mapped to rat chromosome 3 and more specifically by FISH analysis at bands 3q11-->3q12. In addition, we demonstrate that ODF2 is indeed a component of the centrosome and the mitotic spindle poles in mammals.

Transparent network for hybrid multiplexing of fiber Bragg gratings and intensity-modulated fiber-optic sensors.

A network for multiplexing fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and intensity-modulated fiber-optic sensors with no need to distinguish between the two kinds of sensor is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Two FBG sensors and two intensity-modulated sensors are wavelength-division multiplexed; the electrical phase of the output signal is measured as a common parameter for both types of sensor. Furthermore, the intensity sensors become power referenced, and the FBG sensors are interrogated by a low-cost technique. Low cross talk is achieved by use of a tunable optical filter at the detector.

Double-clad 10-W Yb3+-doped fiber master oscillator power fiber amplifier for He3+ optical pumping.

We describe an all-fiber ytterbium-doped laser followed by a double-stage ytterbium-doped double-clad fiber amplifier of 10-W output power for helium pumping. Different cavity designs are investigated with the goal of achieving high-power multimode emission at 1083 nm, wavelength tunability over the helium absorption bands, and linewidth envelope control over the range 1-3 GHz. We point out the domains with unstable output power and discuss their origin.

Wavelength tuning in optically mode-locked semiconductor fiber ring lasers with linearly chirped fiber Bragg gratings.

We demonstrate wavelength tuning in single-wavelength and multiwavelength semiconductor fiber ring lasers that are mode locked with an optically injected control signal. A semiconductor optical amplifier is used to provide gain as well as to function as an optically controlled mode-locking element. Linearly chirped fiber Bragg gratings--single or superimposed--are used to define the lasing wavelengths as well as to provide wavelength tunability and allow for multiwavelength operation. We obtain pulses of tens of picoseconds in duration when we inject a sinusoidal optical control signal into the laser cavity, and we can tune the lasing wavelength(s) over the reflection bandwidth(s) of the grating(s) by simply changing the frequency of the injected control signal.

Low-pump-power, short-fiber copropagating dual-pumped (800 and 1050 nm) thulium-doped fiber amplifier.

Using optical frequency-domain reflectometry to reveal the gain distribution and allow us to optimize a thulium-doped fiber amplifier, we have demonstrated 18-dB gain by employing only 5 m of a 2000-parts-in-10(6)-Tm-doped fiber pumped with 145 mW of power at dual wavelengths of 800 and 1050 nm. The role of the 800-nm pump, which by itself does not permit population inversion, was clearly observed experimentally.

Mutual injection locking of an erbium-doped fiber laser and a fiber-pigtailed Fabry-Perot laser diode.

Mutual injection locking of a fiber-pigtailed Fabry-Perot laser diode (FPLD) and a closed-loop erbium-doped fiber-amplifier-based laser (EDFL) system are studied. A single FPLD longitudinal mode can be lasing in the EDFL-FPLD link, with a reduced linewidth of <0.017 nm and an improved sidemode-suppressing ratio of 50 dB. The FPLD's optimized current range is below threshold within 10%, and its required feedback-injecting power is 12.4 microW (corresponding to 0.03% of the EDFL output power). The maximum detuning ranges of the current and temperature of the FPLD that preserve the narrow linewidth and the highest sidemode-suppressing ratio of the EDFL-FPLD link are 2.4 mA and 2.2 degrees C, respectively. The power dissipated by the EDFL-FPLD link is 20% more than that of the free-running EDFL.

Interrogation unit for fiber Bragg grating sensors that uses a slanted fiber grating.

A novel interrogation technique for fiber Bragg gratings is presented. It is based on measuring the characteristics of the outgoing near-field radiation from a tilted fiber grating. This scheme was experimentally checked and was found to offer a wide wavelength interrogation range as well as a good linearity, stability, and wavelength resolution.

Continuous-wave, totally fiber integrated optical parametric oscillator using holey fiber.

We present, for the first time to our knowledge, a cw, all-fiber optical parametric oscillator that uses a holey fiber. The oscillator operates at 1.55 microns and can yield an oscillating parametric signal that consists of a single line with a 30-dB extinction ratio and a 10-pm linewidth or that consists of multiple lines. In addition to the signal and the idler, five other pairs of spectral lines can be observed that are due to multiple parametric interactions. The source reaches threshold for a pump power of 1.28 W and saturates for pump powers in excess of approximately 1.6 W.

Saturable absorbers incorporating carbon nanotubes directly synthesized onto substrates and fibers and their application to mode-locked fiber lasers.

We present novel carbon-nanotube-based saturable absorbers. Using the low-temperature alcohol catalytic chemical-vapor deposition method, high-quality single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were directly synthesized on quartz substrates and fiber ends. We successfully applied the SWNTs to mode lock a fiber laser producing subpicosecond pulses at a 50-MHz repetition rate.

All-fiber narrowband polarization controller based on coherent acousto-optic mode coupling in single-mode fiber.

An all-fiber, narrowband, tunable polarization controller is proposed and demonstrated. The device is based on coherent acousto-optic mode coupling induced by two orthogonal acoustic waves on a dispersion-compensating fiber. The cooperative coupling between the two polarizations of the core mode and the TE01 cladding mode through the two gratings permits indirect coupling between the two polarizations of the core mode with nearly 100% efficiency, which makes the polarization-controlling function possible. Experimental results verify the operation of the polarization controller with an insertion loss of <1 dB.

Design of dispersion-compensating fibers based on a dual-concentric-core photonic crystal fiber.

A photonic crystal fiber based on a particular periodic arrangement of airholes and pure silica is designed for chromatic dispersion compensation. A two-concentric-core structure is obtained by introducing two different sizes of capillaries (for the airholes) and exhibits very high negative chromatic dispersion [-2200 ps/(nm km) at 1550 nm]. The variation of optogeometric parameters is also investigated to evaluate the tolerance of the fabrication. Finally, the bending influence on the modal characteristics shows that it is possible to tune the phase-matching wavelength over the C band by adjusting the diameter of the fiber.

Investigation of a multiwavelength raman fiber laser based on few-mode fiber Bragg gratings.

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a simple multiwavelength Raman fiber laser based on few-mode fiber Bragg gratings without additional multichannel filters. The multiwavelength Raman laser output has a high extinction ratio of more than 45 dB. The multiwavelength output is so stable that the peak power fluctuation is less than 0.5 dB. The number of lasing wavelengths can be adjusted, corresponding to the properties of few-mode Bragg gratings with multiple resonant wavelengths. By the thermal tuning method, the lasing wavelength of each channel can be effectively controlled, and the laser's tunability is measured to be 10.5 pm/ degrees C.

Lifting polarization degeneracy of modes by fiber design: a platform for polarization-insensitive microbend fiber gratings.

Polarization dependence in microbend gratings is an inherent problem, even in perfectly circular fibers, since antisymmetric modes are almost degenerate linear combinations of four distinct, polarization-sensitive modes. We demonstrate a novel fiber design that lifts polarization degeneracies of the antisymmetric modes to solve this problem. By intentionally exacerbating the polarization splittings, we achieve coupling to only the polarization-insensitive doublet, over wavelength ranges exceeding 100 nm, thus demonstrating a device with practical usable bandwidths. This allows all previous applications envisaged with UV-induced long-period gratings to be realized with the significantly lower-cost microbend technology platform.

Simultaneous demodulation technique for a multiplexed fiber Fizeau interferometer and fiber Bragg grating sensor system.

We propose a demodulation technique for a multiplexed fiber Fizeau interferometer (FFI) and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor system using the discrete wavelet transform with signal processing enhancements. This simple and flexible demodulation technique determines the cavity length of FFI and the Bragg wavelength of FBG simultaneously and is especially suited for quasi-static measurements. We demonstrate this demodulation technique by performing some strain measurements, and a strain resolution of 1.0 microepsilon and an accuracy of 2.6 microepsilon are obtained. The maximum cross-talk of the sensor system is 6% of the applied strains.
