Papillary serous carcinoma of the peritoneum following endometrial cancer.

Two cases of advanced papillary serous carcinoma of the peritoneum occurred after hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy for endometrial carcinoma. Careful resectioning of the original ovarian specimens failed to demonstrate a previously undiagnosed ovarian malignancy. In both cases, CA 125 levels, which were being followed routinely because of the previous endometrial cancer, rose before the diagnosis of peritoneal carcinoma and corresponded closely to patient response to therapy.

[Mortality in malignant tumors of the peritoneum in Italy: search for correlations with exposure to asbestos].

In the years 1981-85, 2438 malignant neoplasms of peritoneum occurred in Italy: the crude mortality rate was 0.86 X 10(-5) per year. The standardized mortality rates of Italian provinces ranged from 0.20 to 1.86 X 10(-5) per year. Some degree of misclassification can affect the ascertainment of peritoneal tumors as a death cause. In some of the Provinces with the highest mortality rates dockyards or asbestos-cement industries are located (e.g. Genova, La Spezia; Alessandria); in other Provinces the presence of industries involving an important use of asbestos could not be ruled out.

Solitary fibrous tumors ('fibrous mesotheliomas') of the peritoneum. A report of three cases and a review of the literature.

The clinical and pathologic features of three new and seven previously described solitary fibrous tumors of the peritoneum are reviewed. The male-female ratio has been 7:3, and the patients have ranged from 27 to 64 (average, 54) years of age. Most of the tumors have been large (over 9 cm) and have been responsible for significant symptomatology. Microscopic examination has typically shown mildly to moderately cellular fibrous tumors with prominent hyalinization, although occasional tumors have exhibited focal marked cellularity. Cytologic atypicality and mitotic figures have been rare or absent. Immunohistochemical stains have shown positivity only for vimentin. There has been no evidence of recurrence in any of the cases. The clinical, gross, histologic, and immunohistochemical features of these tumors are identical to those of fibrous tumors of the pleura, and a similar origin from submesothelial mesenchyme is likely.

[Gelatinous disease of the peritoneum of appendiceal origin. Apropos of 2 Senegalese cases].

The authors report two cases of Peritoneum Gelatinous Sickness of appendicular origin, occurring in male adults aged 65 and 57. Laparoscopy practised on an extended abdomen showing non-homogeneous dullness confirmed the diagnosis in both cases. The laparotomy highlighted the gelatinous substance and led to appendicectomy aimed at the mucocele. They take this opportunity to discuss the unusualness of this affliction in Africa, and recall the clinical and etiological means and the diagnostical difficulties that this disease evokes.

[Non-traumatic colic perforation in free peritoneum. Apropos of 61 cases].

Sixty-one non-traumatic perforations in free peritoneum are reported. The principal aetiology is diverticulitis (35 cases) followed by cancer (22 cases). 18 derivations were carried out, 34 colectomies without anastomosis, 5 ideal colectomies and 4 diverticulectomies. Total mortality was 19.7-14% for diverticulitis, 22.2% for perforations at the cancer site, 50% from diastasic perforations. Stress is laid on the need to treat colic perforation by colectomy without anastomosis, confining derivation openeum. Sixty-one cases.

Comparison of cellular and secreted proteins of macrophages from the testis and peritoneum on two-dimensional polyacrylamide gels: evidence of tissue specific function.

It has been shown that the testis contains a population of cells with many characteristics typical of macrophages of other tissues. However, these macrophages are unique in that they secrete a product(s) that is responsible for stimulating testosterone secretion by Leydig cells while peritoneal macrophages have no similar effect. The purpose of the present study was to compare the pattern of cellular and secreted proteins of rat testicular macrophages to those of peritoneal macrophages using two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE). Cellular and secreted proteins of cultured macrophages from the testis and peritoneum were labeled with 35S-methionine and 35S-cystine and then analyzed by 2D-PAGE using a computer-assisted image analysis system. It was found that the patterns of both cellular and secreted proteins of testicular macrophages were vastly different than those of peritoneal macrophages. One striking difference was the presence of a family of proteins in the 47 kd range, with a range of pI from 5.7-6.3 that represented approximately 57% of the total protein secreted by testicular macrophages. Proteins of similar molecular weight and pI represented only approximately 15% of the total peritoneal macrophage secreted proteins. Many other differences were observed in less abundant cellular and secreted proteins. These studies strongly support the concept that macrophages are functionally heterogeneous and secrete a group of proteins characteristic to the histological location of these cells.

Nontrophoblastic pathology of the female genital tract and peritoneum associated with pregnancy.

This report reviews the clinical and pathological features of nontrophoblastic lesions that involve the female genital tract and peritoneum and are typically or exclusively associated with pregnancy or the puerperium. The majority of them are nonneoplastic lesions that may be confused with a neoplasm on clinical or pathological examination. Pregnancy-related changes within gynecological tumors that may create problems in histological interpretation also are discussed briefly.

[Benign cystic mesothelioma of the peritoneum].

A case of peritoneal cystic mesothelioma in a 40-yr-old woman is reported. The patient was operated on for signs of acute appendicitis. The lesion was made up of small, multiple, thin-walled cysts and both visceral and parietal layers of the peritoneum in the appendix region were involved. The lesion must be differentiated from other cystic lesions of the abdominal cavity and in particular from the multilocular lymphangioma. The diagnostic role of special techniques, such as immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy, in difficult cases is emphasized.

[Perforations in free peritoneum in Crohn disease].

Among Crohn's disease complications, perforation in free peritoneum is extremely rare, this being due to the disease's anatomopathological characteristics. Three cases of free perforation are described: one of the colon and two of the intestine. On the basis of the results of surgical treatment, straightforward suture of the perforation is contraindicated. The most rational treatment, when possible, is resection with immediate or deferred reconstruction.

[Free tumors of the peritoneum. Review of the literature apropos of a case].

Free bodies in the peritoneum are observed infrequently, particularly large solid tumors as in the present report. Of slightly more frequent occurrence are detached epiploic appendices or cystic tumors. Symptomatology varies greatly according to whether organs are compressed or irritated by the free body. Diagnosis is always preoperative, and the postoperative course simple because the tumor is delivered without dissection or ligature. Prognosis is good since these tumors are benign. Histopathology demonstrates origin and histologic nature of free body, and operation for a "chronic uterine fibroma" in the present case revealed a large free tumor. Operative findings (absence of right appendage) and histology suggested a diagnosis more likely to be of ovarian fibroma with a ruptured pedicle from chronic torsion. Despite the advanced age of the patient (96 years) no postoperative complications were reported.

[X-ray computed tomographic aspects of gelatinous disease of the peritoneum. Apropos of 5 cases].

Gelatinous disease of the peritoneum, designated by Anglo-Saxon authors as peritoneal pseudomyxoma is a rare affection characterized by the presence in the peritoneal cavity of a mucoid substance corresponding to an acid mucopolysaccharide. It develops secondary to an acid mucopolysaccharide. It develops secondary to mucosecreting malignant tumors, particularly of ovarian or appendicular origin, and its capacity to provoke multiple recurrences makes it of fairly poor prognosis. Diagnosis has been improved by the availability of non-aggressive investigations such as ultrasound and particularly computed tomography imaging. Suggestive CT scan signs are hepatic scalloping and a partitioned intraperitoneal effusion. Follow up scans can give data on the course of the disease and detect any complications (renal and digestive lesions, intraperitoneal abscess).

[Benign cystic mesothelioma of the peritoneum].

Histological, histochemical and ultrastructural analysis of a rare benign tumour of peritoneum, called "cystic mesothelioma", is performed. Cystic mesothelioma is characterized histologically by a combination of cystic, papillary and adenomatoid structures; mesothelial cell signs are seen ultrastructurally.

[Mesothelioma of the peritoneum with pulmonary metastases (author's transl)].

Report of the case history of a female patient suffering from malignant mesothelioma of the peritoneum. Exceptional findings were a dense nodular hematogenic dissemination over both lungs and the duration of disease, which till now extends over 35 months. Pathogenesis, course of disease, diagnosis therapy and epicrisis are discussed.

[Diffuse malignant mesothelioma of the pleura and peritoneum].

An analysis is presented of 14 cases of diffuse mesothelioma [one of them involving the peritoneum, the rest being of the pleural type] in postmortem material for a period of 18 years [1962--1978] with a view to the clinical course, macroscopic and microscopic pictures, diagnostic possibilities, and to the relationship to aetiological factors. With only one exception, no correlation to asbestosis was found in terms of either the patients' personal histories or morphology. A meticulously performed postmortem examination appears to be the most reliable diagnostic criterion.

[Fossae, recesses and culs-de-sac in the pelvic peritoneum of women (author's transl)].

The pelvic peritoneum in women is peculiarly irregular because of the numerous folds, fossae, recesses and culs-de-sac that exist in it. Blood and purulent serous fluids occur in the abdomino-pelvic cavity and stagnate in these sites. Since they are particularly to be found around the adnexae they can give rise to secondary infection occurring as a result of primary adnexal infection. Furthermore, when serous fluid is regurgitated into the tubo-ovarian hollow through the abdominal os of the tube and into the pertoneum around the ovary, adhesions and endometrial deposits occurring in this area can be explained. Each one of these structures should be systematically explored, particularly when hystero-salpingographies and laparoscopies are being carried out. Furthermore, they should be cleaned out very meticulously after all conservative surgery to prevent the formation of adhesions.

[Liposarcoma of the gallbladder and the peritoneum. A case report].

We report a case of a male patient who was cholecystectomized at the age of 79. We diagnosed an intramural myxoid liposarcoma of the gall bladder without signs of metastasis. Two years later at autopsy we found a diffuse spread of the same type of tumour on mesentery, omentum maius, parietal and visceral peritoneum. The unusual primary site of the tumour is pointed out referring to literature, the question of primary multicentric liposarcoma resp. diffuse peritoneal metastases is discussed.

[Malignant mesothelioma of the peritoneum. Case report].

It is reported about a case of an advanced malign mesothelioma of the peritoneum. After a palliative operation the patient was treated for 3 years combined-cytostatically with cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, 5-fluororacil and vincristin. The patient has been free of symptoms of tumours for 4 years. Possible variants of therapy are discussed because of the rareness of the tumour and the therapeutic problems resulting from it.
