A technique for post-orthodontic retention of maxillary anterior teeth in the restored dentition: A case report.

Retention is one of the most important factors in the long term success of orthodontic treatment. In the adult patient when orthodontic movement is part of an overall treatment plan involving other disciplines, the provision of permanent retention can he complicated. Several methods have been proposed in the literature to date, all with their own problems and risks. This case report presents a technique that may solve this problem for suitable patients in a way that is both non-invasive and has excellent long-term maintenance potential.

Clinical evidence and literature to compare two different therapeutic protocols in tooth avulsion.

AIM: This is to assess the priority in tooth avulsion: replantation as quickly as possible and deferred endodontic treatment, or replantation and elimination of every irritating stimulus for the periodontal ligament. The objective is to establish a univocal protocol by analysing and comparing the various components of these therapeutic procedures. MATERIALS AND METHODS STUDY DESIGN: 20 patients were selected and divided into 2 groups: in group A we focused our attention on the rapidity of replantation, in group B we focused on the elimination of the necrotic pulp and every possible irritating stimulus that might lead to root resorption of inflammatory nature. RESULTS: Clinically, dental mobility seems to be greater in the first group. However after 15 days teeth have a comparable mobility and after one month they all show a mobility degree 1. Radiographically a greater incidence of resorption can be observed in group A compared to group B as in the first one a higher number of replanted teeth undergo resorption. Such lesions have the tendency to remain constant or even increase. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study seem to take only one direction: extraoral endodontic therapy.

The transitional phases of implant-perio-prostheses with root-form implants.

The functional, aesthetic and periodontal integrity of any implant reconstruction depends on good prosthetic planning. Three clinical concepts used to increase control and the predictability of prognosis and outcome are described in this article: the use of templates in the early phase of treatment, temporization or provisionalization during the second transitional phase, and "jumping" the case in the final transitional phase.

Management of pediatric mandibular fractures.

The incidence of mandibular fractures is rare in the pediatric population when compared to adults. Although the basic principles for management are the same as for the adult, certain anatomical features of the pediatric mandible warrant special attention. Problems such as mixed dentition, unerupted teeth, and ongoing growth in the mandible require careful diagnosis and planning in deciding on the proper treatment.

Clinical applications of the etched metal retainer.

This article presents the treatment of several patients directed at the prevention of periodontal disease and restoration of an occlusion from an eating disorder. The disruption of the harmony between the anterior and posterior determinants of occlusion can lead to the loss of teeth. The lack of anterior guidance can create a molar-guided occlusion producing unfavorable occlusal interferences with destructive balancing side prematurities. Conversely, if the posterior teeth are permitted to drift into unstable occlusal relationships, the posterior dentition would develop an irregular guidance despite a suitable anterior guidance. The goal of the profession is preventing occlusal deterioration or disharmony between the anterior and posterior occlusal determinants and restore compromised occlusions when necessary. Etched metal retainers were fundamental to the treatment of specific patients while patient selection and perceptive tooth preparation were essential for success.

A functional acrylic periodontal veneer (case report)

Acrylic periodontal veneers were recommended to improve - aesthetics following periodontal surgery, especially when there is considerable apical movement of the gingival margin with subsequent exposure of roots (L'Estrange and strahan 1970). The present report is a case of a young sudanese lady, 30 years old, who presented with severe gingival recession on the lingual surface of 21/12 with subsequent exposure of the roots as a result of inflammatory periodontal disease. The exposed roots were sharp enough to cause a traumatic ulcer at the tip of the tongue. Healing of the ulcer was only attainable following construction of an acrylic periodontal veneer to cover the sharp roots and was placed on the lingual surface of 21/12. The patients acceptability to the veneer was excellent and encouraging.
