[The function of the hydrokinetic and ekbolic pancreas after acute pancreatitis].

Thirteen patients were investigated 3-4 weeks (I. examination) and 3-5 months (II. examination) after the ceasing of the signs symptoms of an acute pancreatitis concerning their hydrokinetic and ekbolic pancreas-functions. In addition, the pancreatic ducts were demonstrated by ERCP. Reduction of the secretion were shown in 31% at the I. examination and in 23% at the II. examination. There were significant differences in the outputs of bicarbonate, trypsine and chymotrypsine compared to healthy test persons at the I. examination. At the II. examination, however, no significant differences could be observed compared to healthy test persons. The exocrine function of the pancreas was getting worse during the interval between the I. and II. examination in 2 cases but it became normal in 5 cases. Pathological alterations at the pancreativ-duct-system were not demonstrable shown at all.

Rates of receiving HIV test results: data from the U.S. National Health Interview Survey for 1994 and 1995.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency and predictors of receipt of HIV test results. METHODS: Analysis of responses from 19,127 adults in 1994 and 16,848 in 1995 surveyed for the U.S. National Health Interview Survey, using logit models to determine factors independently associated with decreased likelihood of receiving HIV test results. RESULTS: Overall, 12.5% (+/-1.0%) of persons tested in 1994 and 13.3% (+/-0.9%) in 1995 had not received their test results. Those whose test was not self-initiated were significantly less likely (p<.05) to receive their test results. The proportion who did not receive results was lowest among persons who had sought testing (6.1% in 1994 and 4.3% in 1995) and highest among persons whose tests were required for hospitalization or surgery (24.2% in 1994 and 22.9% in 1995). CONCLUSIONS: An estimated 2.3 million of the 17.5 million people tested annually for HIV infection did not receive their test results. Alternative measures to increase the number of persons who receive their results need to be evaluated. These may include enhancing prevention counseling about the importance of receiving test results, telephone notification, or using rapid HIV-screening tests that provide results at the time of testing.

Does computer-synthesized speech manifest personality? Experimental tests of recognition, similarity-attraction, and consistency-attraction.

Would people exhibit similarity-attraction and consistency-attraction toward unambiguously computer-generated speech even when personality is clearly not relevant? In Experiment 1, participants (extrovert or introvert) heard a synthesized voice (extrovert or introvert) on a book-buying Web site. Participants accurately recognized personality cues in text to speech and showed similarity-attraction in their evaluation of the computer voice, the book reviews, and the reviewer. Experiment 2, in a Web auction context, added personality of the text to the previous design. The results replicated Experiment 1 and demonstrated consistency (voice and text personality)-attraction. To maximize liking and trust, designers should set parameters, for example, words per minute or frequency range, that create a personality that is consistent with the user and the content being presented.

Localization and characteristics of ferritin in human bone marrow.

It has been found possible to test ferritin concentrations in the reticulum and hemopoietic cells from human bone marrow by an immunoradiometric assay. Ferritin concentration in healthy test persons amounts to 0.92 +/- 0.38 ng/microgram protein in the reticulum and 0.084 +/- 0.031 ng/microgram protein in hemopoietic cells. In healthy test persons about 90% of the ferritin is localized in the reticulum and about 10% in the hemopoietic cells. The ferritin concentration in the reticulum is decreased in patients having iron deficiency anemia. In these patients only 50-70% of the bone marrow ferritin is localized in the reticulum. Bone marrow ferritin was characterized by a combination of anion-exchange chromatography using Sephadex A-50 and an immunoradiometric assay. Marrow ferritin from healthy persons is eluted at chloride concentrations between 200 and 300 mM. The anion-exchange chromatographic properties of ferritin in the reticulum and hemopoietic cells are identical.

[Renal dipeptidylpeptidase IV excretion in drug-induced kidney changes].

The course of the excretion of dipeptidyl-peptidase IV (DP IV)-alanine aminopeptidase, beta-glucuronidase and total protein with the urine was investigated during the treatment of 11 patients with pyelonephritis with gentamicin, after application of a renal radiographic contrast medium in 7 patients with arterial hypertension and after regional perfusion of an extremity in 10 patients with malignant melanoma. In the reference group in male test persons with 147.0 nmol/s X l a higher DP IV activity in the urine was recognized than in the female test persons (100.0 nmol/s X l). After application of the drugs a rhythmically intermitting increased excretion of all enzymes mentioned develops. The study confirms the usuability of the DP IV-activity for enzymological investigations of the urine.

[Vegetative parameters under the effect of ouabain (g-strophanthin) in endogenous depressive patients. 1. The salivation rate].

In 7 healthy test persons and in 17 endogenous depressive patients the salivations rate was measured in a survey investigation with the SHP-test. The salivation rate of healthy test persons is constant. In endogenous depressive patients it develops a diminishing of depression depth under treatment with Ouabain (g-Strophanthin) between the 6th and the 12th day which is connected with reduction of the drive diminishing and the restauration of mood. The effective salivation rate is gaining. Possible principles of the influence of Ouabain are discussed.

Performance testing of personal dosemeters from eleven dosimetry services in Sweden.

The Swedish regulation, SSI FS 98:5, requires that radiological workers of category A use dosemeters from an approved personal dosimetry service. The 11 services operating in Sweden at the moment use five different types of dosemeter. All have been tested for their ability to determine Hp(10) and some of them to determine Hp(0.07) according to the European Commission report Radiation Protection 73, EUR 14852, of 1994. The five unique systems have been tested regarding the angular and energy dependence of the response of the dosemeters. The test points for the determination of Hp(10) are all, except one, within the trumpet curve and for the unique systems it is shown that the uncertainty related to angular response at three different energies is within the required +/- 40% except for the lowest X ray quality 40 kV. The energy dependence dominates over the directional dependence and the choice of radiation quality for calibration is of great importance for the system performance.

Reversal of a body image disorder (macrosomatognosia) in Parkinson's disease by treatment with AC pulsed electromagnetic fields.

Macrosomatognosia refers to a disorder of the body image in which the patient perceives a part or parts of his body as disproportionately large. Macrosomatognosia has been associated with lesions in the parietal lobe, particularly the right parietal lobe, which integrates perceptual-sensorimotor functions concerned with the body image. It has been observed most commonly in patients with paroxysmal cerebral disorders such as epilepsy and migraine. The Draw-a-Person-Test has been employed in neuropsychological testing to identify disorders of the body image. Three fully medicated elderly Parkinsonian patients who exhibited, on the Draw-a-Person Test, macrosomatognosia involving the upper limbs are presented. In these patients spontaneous drawing of the figure of a man demonstrated disproportionately large arms. Furthermore, it was observed that the arm affected by tremor or, in the case of bilateral tremor, the arm showing the most severe tremor showed the greatest abnormality. This association implies that dopaminergic mechanisms influence neuronal systems in the nondominant right parietal lobe which construct the body image. After receiving a course of treatments with AC pulsed electromagnetic fields (EMFs) in the picotesla flux density applied transcranially, these patients' drawings showed reversal of the macrosomatognosia. These findings demonstrate that transcranial applications of AC pulsed EMFs affect the neuronal systems involved in the construction of the human body image and additionally reverse disorders of the body image in Parkinsonism which are related to right parietal lobe dysfunction.

[Mycological studies of patients with hemoblastoses].

40 patients with haemoblastosis were examined clinically and by cultures for presence of yeast mycosis. Moreover, we analyzed specific antibodies with the help of cell agglutination, the passive haemagglutination and the precipitation using Candida antigen. 29 test persons were found having a yeast mycosis, 3 patients without clinical symptoms in pharynx showed presence of yeasts by culture, 8 test persons were clinically and mycologically negative. In cell agglutination we recorded titres of less than 1:20 to 1:5 160 and in haemagglutination titres of less than 1:20 to 1:5 160 and in haemagglutination such of less than 1:20 to 1:320. 5 patients showed positive precipitation reaction with antigen extracted of membranes of Candida albicans cells. We observed different titre motions with these patients: during illness the titre either rised or decreased clearly, or the patients were in a condition of humoral anergy against the Candida albicans antigen. It is hinted at the necessity to watch over susceptible patients mycologically.

Spontaneous and positional nystagmus in healthy persons demonstrated only by electronystagmography: physiological spontaneous nystagmus or "functional scar"?

We wanted to ascertain whether a physiological horizontal vestibular spontaneous nystagmus is existent, or whether the spontaneous and positional nystagmus seen in clinically healthy persons in the electronystagmogram -- when fixation had been excluded completely -- was always the result of earlier damages to the vestibular system (Jatho). For this purpose we tried to detect a spontaneous and positional nystagmus in 102 healthy persons from 6 age groups (17 each) between 11 and 70 years of age. When the ENG was registered with open eyes in darkness, 63 out of the 102 test persons had a horizontal spontaneous or positional nystagmus, however, under the Frenzel glasses there was a nystagmus in only 2 out of these test persons. With open eyes in darkness, the frequency and intensity was the same in all age groups. With this, we believe to have proved that a physiological horizontal vestibular nystagmus does exist. We share Kornhuber's opinion that the examination with the Frenzel glasses in a dark room, together with the head shaking test and positional test, at the present time represents the best method for differentiating between physiological and pathological spontaneous nystagmus.

Network latency and operator performance in teleradiology applications.

Teleradiology applications often use an interactive conferencing mode with remote control mouse pointers. When a telephone is used for voice communication, latencies of the data network can create a temporal discrepancy between the position of the mouse pointer and the verbal communication. To assess the effects of this dissociation, we examined the performance of 5 test persons carrying out simple teleradiology tasks under varying simulated network conditions. When the network latency exceeded 400 milliseconds, the performance of the test persons dropped, and an increasing number of errors were made. This effect was the same for constant latencies, which can occur on the network path, and for variable delays caused by the Nagle algorithm, an internal buffering scheme used by the TCP/IP protocol. Because the Nagle algorithm used in typical TCP/IP implementations causes a latency of about 300 milliseconds even before a data packet is sent, any additional latency in the network of 100 milliseconds or more will result in a decreased operator performance in teleradiology applications. These conditions frequently occur on the public Internet or on overseas connections. For optimal performance, the authors recommend bypassing the Nagle algorithm in teleradiology applications.
