[Individual reactions, summation phenomena and collective reactions].

If a chance accumulation or a strictly ordained society of people feels threatened in its economic, ideologio-religious or psychological existence, more frequently occurring individual reactions such as pathologically increased anxiety, fear and terror may become new symptoms; of particular community, the "summation phenomenon". This includes especially general unrest, a mood of crisis and readiness to panic. In a mass of humanity all requisites for the development of a panic are present. This can develop acutely, as a weak abortive failure, but it may also be chronic. Measures to prevent or control panic may only be successful if they take into consideration the genesis and nature of individually varied panics.

The "jerks": mass hysteria or epilepsy?

Hysterical "epidemics" of "epilepsy" are well known in Eastern and Western cultures. A unique situation in the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries was the American religious movement, the setting in which "the jerks" occurred. Descriptions of various types of "jerks," including dancing, barking, laughing exercise, running exercise, and singing exercise are described.

Identification of phencyclidine and its analogues at low concentrations in urine by selected ion monitoring.

This paper presents retention behavior and mass spectra of eluting peaks for twelve phenyl and thienyl analogues of phencyclidine (PCP) as well as PCP itself. An on-column decomposition product common to all thienyl analogues is described. Finally, a practical analytical procedure is given for the detection and identification of these compounds in low (under 5 ng/mL) concentrations in urine.

The sociocultural dynamics of mass hysteria: a case study of social conflict in West Malaysia.

This discussion of an episode of mass hysteria in a Malay college in West Malaysia examines stress and conflict in relation to the interpretive process within a specific social setting. Unlike previous studies, which conceptualize mass hysteria as a cathartic response to accumulated stress, the present study treats stress as a matter of definition in a specific sociocultural context rather than as an objective given from which predictions can be made. Objections are raised to the logic of explanations that attribute mass hysteria to environmental stress. What is of concern is how meanings are assigned to events that are experienced as stressful, how participants and observers explain these events, and the consequences that follow from their interpretations.

The sick building syndrome and mass hysteria.

Significant overlaps of symptoms in SBS and MH exist including central nervous system manifestations, mucous membrane irritation, skin abnormalities, and eye symptomatology. Both occur with greater frequency in women with lower job rank and in patients with psychological and physical stresses. No specific cause has been identified in over 75% of the cases of SBS. Remotely, less than 25% have been alleged to be secondary to an environmental toxin but even removal of the inciting irritant does not improve the symptoms. Not surprisingly, litigation is lurking in the background with the chronic complainer. There has been no evidence of exposure to toxins or VOCs that exceed the NIOSH safety standards in any SBS cases. The importance of a thorough work up is to distinguish those cases that are secondary to bacteria or toxic contaminants and infection where significant morbidity and death have occurred in the building related illness. Although this is a separate entity it indicates that the building environment can be a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Other variables such as temperature and humidity do influence the frequency of SBS symptomatology. It may be that we are not yet sophisticated enough to find the causes that are present within our current paradigms. Current levels of toxic data testing may not be sensitive enough to realize that they might be a cause of toxicity. It might be that at low levels with multiple toxins and VOCs present, the additive effects may cause toxic symptomatology whereas individually they do not. In summary, SBS is an emerging phenomena within our litigious society.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The iatrogenic interview in the effective management of the fearful dental patient.

This article discusses how dentists can effectively deal with the dental fears and anxieties of patients. It will provide an understanding of the cause of dental fear and the importance it plays in successful patient management. A simplified approach is described that provides a practical method of implementing these techniques in our daily routines.

[The individual and the collective].

The author introduces and illustrates the position of mental analysis that gives great importance to the relationship between the individual and the collective and he traces in the human mind an endopsychic collective significant structure. This statement sees the collective pressure always present around and inside the individual and we can consider him like a focusing point of a very extensive communication and relationship system. The individual, although he is a part of the collective, is also an antagonist of it: as a collective body cell he can be used or even eliminated by the same collective. Nevertheless through sexuality the individual tries to seize and obtain something favourable for himself, but on this level he meets with his biological and collective dramatic fate. The little family collective is of intermediate structure between the developing individual (child) and the big collective (society). In this sense regarding their own children parents are a filter or a membrane who can let or not let outside stimulus pass through and this can be unsuitable and in consequence harmful. The author vividly shows how in analytic therapy the analyst, as well as reestablishing the filter function that is often lacking in the patient's mind, will struggle together with the patient to obtain differentiation and individualization. The author to end with, refers to simplified quotations of the dreams of patients undergoing analysis, showing how these dreams are tinged by our submersion in the collective or by our relative emersion as individuals.
