AIMS: The purpose of this study was to establish certain epidemiological characteristics of cerebral aneurysm surgery at the Hospital Regional Docente Vicente Corral Moscoso (HVCM), in the city of Cuenca. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We examined the medical records of the patients who were treated at the HVCM, in Cuenca, over a 14 year period after being diagnosed as suffering from aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (ASAH), which was confirmed using cerebral arteriography. Patients were catalogued according to age, sex, origin, marital status, the number of months the aneurysm had been ruptured, their Hunt and Hess score on admission, incurrent diseases, habit of smoking, neurological signs on admission, the site of the aneurysm, treatment received, complications, surgery-rupture and admission-surgery time and outcomes when discharged. Only patients who had undergone surgical treatment were considered. RESULTS: There were an average of 6.07 cases of ASAH and 4.7 aneurysm operations a year. Most patients were females from the provinces of Azuay and El Oro; the average age was 45.9 years, and incidence was higher in the months of March-April and August-September. The most common site for presentation was the posterior communicating artery, which occurred in 44% of the cases. The most frequently observed preoperative complications were rebleeding and vasospasm. Surgery was performed on a total of 67 patients and none of them were submitted to early surgery. Operative death rate was 6%. Overall results were optimal in 55.2%. CONCLUSIONS: The therapeutic option offered by our service for this pathology is satisfactory. Indeed, it is similar to that employed in other centres throughout Latin America and has improved over the last few years thanks to the experience that has been acquired in this field.
Trypanosoma cruzi infection in the Ecuadorian Amazon region has recently been reported. A seroepidemiologic survey conducted in four provinces in this region indicates a seroprevalence rate of 2.4% among the 6,866 samples collected in 162 communities. Among children < OR = 10 years of age, 1.2% were seropositive. Risk factors for T. cruzi seropositivity were having been born and remaining in the Ecuadorian Amazon provinces, age, living in a house with a thatch roof and open or mixed wall construction, recognizing the vector insects, and reporting being bitten by a triatomine bug. These data suggest active transmission of Chagas' disease in the Ecuadorian Amazon region is associated with poor housing conditions, and highlight the need for further studies aimed at understanding the biology of the insect vectors, reservoir species, and the clinical impact of T. cruzi infection as the basis for future educational and control programs in this region.

Floriculture represents one of the major sources of income in the Ecuadorian Andean Region that can be carried out either in open fields as in greenhouses by using chemical compounds, growing hormones and xenobiotics. Among pesticides, ethylenbisdithiocarbamate (EBDTCs) fungicides represent the most extensively used. The aim of the study was the assessment of exposure to EBDTCs in Ecuadorian floricultural workers by the determination of the urinary excretion of the main metabolite of these compounds, ethylenethiourea (ETU). For this purpose, thirty-six floriculture workers and 7 unexposed healthy subjects were recruited for the study. Median level of ETU excretion in agricultural workers before the work shift was 3.2 micrograms/g creatinine, ranging from 0.4 to 34.5 micrograms/g creatinine. After pesticide application, urinary ETU increased to 6.2 micrograms/g creatinine (1.5-26.5) microgram/g creatinine. Urinary ETU resulted significantly higher in overall workers, taken as pre- and post-shift samples, when compared to controls (0.7, 0.4-2.1 micrograms/g creatinine, p < 0.01). According to jobs, applicators showed the highest levels of ETU excretion whereas growing, post-harvesting and maintenance workers showed similar levels of exposure. Higher level ETU excretion was observed in greenhouse compared to open field workers.

A new sciaenid was found at a fish market on the Ecuadorian coast. Cynoscion nortoni, described from 11 specimens, is characterised by a relatively large eye, a long head and pectoral fin, a high dorsal fin-ray count and a dark, steel grey colour on its dorsum. The specimens were captured over the continental shelf with a long line at depths between 100 and 200 meters. Another deep water species, Umbrina bussingi, is recorded for the first time from southern Colombia.
