Most rehabilitation centers only admit patients for rehabilitation who have a reasonable chance of being discharged to a noninstitutional setting. With certain classifications, such as stroke, 20 to 30% of patients are often discharged to a skilled nursing facility (SNF). Problems associated with rehabilitation admission procedures make careful psychosocial determinations difficult. We attempted to have experienced rehabilitation social workers predict discharge placement following a formal evaluation. Three experienced rehabilitation social workers met formally with patients and/or families for an initial interview following admission to the rehabilitation unit. They assessed the functional goals developed by the rehabilitation team and predicted which patients would go home and which would go to a SNF. Their predictions were compared to the actual discharge placement. A chi square test revealed that the social workers accurately predicted discharge home but were unable to accurately predict which patients would go to an SNF. Of those predicted to return home, 95% did so. Of those predicted to go to an SNF, only 57% did so. Of the total sample of 126 patients, 86% were discharged home and 14% were discharged to an SNF. This finding suggests that patients should not be denied a trial of rehabilitation solely on the basis of projected discharge placement.
Thirty three samples from recreational waters from different areas of Río de la Plata were tested for Salmonella (Fig. 1). A 200 ml sample filtered through a diatom bed as well as 2 and 20 ml samples without filtering were studied using a simple and economical technique. The isolation probability was directly dependent on the water volume analyzed. Best results were obtained when tetrathionate broth with novobiocin and Salmonella shigella agar were used (Table 3). Salmonella was isolated from 36% of the samples studied and 12 serotypes were identified (Table 5). The relation between the NPM of each bacteriological indicator used and the NPM of Salmonella are shown in Table 4. Correlation values were calculated by relating mean point logarithms of the classes in Table 4 with the isolation percentages of Salmonella for each class. These values were low, except for fecal Streptococcus (R2 = 0.94). The high density of fecal coliforms found in Bagliardi and Pescadores Beaches (rarely less than 10.000 bacteria/100 ml) and the incidence of Salmonella, lead us to conclude that these waters are unsafe for bathing and swimming, specially for children, according with the international recommendation on the quality of recreational waters. Waters with the characteristics described here should be periodically analyzed for Salmonella concentration. The lack of correlation values between the MPN of total and fecal coliforms and the MPN of Salmonella, also supports this advise.

Adult goldfish had one tectal lobe removed surgically, and several months later, the eye contralateral to the missing tectum was injected with radioactive proline. Radioautographs of the brains were studied to trace the paths and termination sites of the optic fibers. The optic tract decussated at the chiasm, as normally, but then ran caudally in a large neuroma on the tectum-less side of the brain. Substantial numbers of fibers left this neuroma to enter two or more of five commissures, through which they recrossed the midline. These commissures: transverse, minor, horizontal, posterior and ansate, ordinarily contain few or no optic fibers. All are normally linked with the tectum. Negligible numbers of aberrant optic fibers recrossed the midline elsewhere. On the intact side of the brain, ipsilateral to the injected eye, the optic fibers innervated some or all of the nuclei and areas normally served by contralateral retinal fibers. An earlier behavioral study of these same fish had shown that some of them made reversed optokinetic nystagmus in response to stripe movement seen by the eye projecting ipsilaterally; others failed to respond to stimuli through this eye. In all the reversed responders, a caudal group of retinal projection sites was labeled ipsilaterally. This included the basal optic nucleus and the caudal portions of nucleus dorsolateralis thalami and area pretectalis. In the non-responders, these targets were not labeled ipsilaterally. Together, these results suggest that one or more of these three sites is or are responsible for optokinetic nystagmus in normal goldfish.
