[Squamous cell carcinoma arising from chromomycosis. Report of two cases].

Madagascar is the principal area of endemic chromomycosis in the world with 1 400 cases registered from 1955 to 1996. Malignant transformation is rare and only 12 cases have been reported. We describe herein two new cases of squamous carcinoma arising from chronic lesions of chromomycosis. These carcinomas which develop slowly and are non invasive, are similar to those arising from burns, tropical phagedenic ulcers and chronic leprosy ulcers. Epidemiological aspects, histopathology and treatment are described.

Molecular epidemiology of Fonsecaea pedrosoi using mitochondrial DNA analysis.

Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from 49 clinical Fonsecaea pedrosoi isolates (18 isolates from Japan, 17 from Madagascar, 7 from Argentina, 5 from Venezuela, 1 from Costa Rica and 1 unknown) was studied. The 49 isolates were composed of 20 isolates of Type 1, 16 of Type 2, 12 of Type 4 and 1 of a new mtDNA type, Type 7, which was closely related to Type 2. On the bases of the results of 120 isolates of the present (49 isolates) and previous (71 isolates) studies, F. pedrosoi was classified into seven mtDNA types and according to the relationship between mtDNA types and geographic origins: in Japan and probably in China, Type 1 isolates; in Zaire and Madagascar, Type 2; in Central and South America, Type 4 and Type 1. These results indicated that the geographical origin of F. pedrosoi isolate could be roughly inferred from its mtDNA type.

Chromoblastomycosis↗

Cerebral chromoblastomicosis--a rare case report of cerebral abscess and brief review of literature--a case report.

A rare case of Cerebral Chromomycosis caused by chromogenic fungus Cladosporium trichoides in a 35 year old male with classical presentation of cerebral abscess is being presented. The case report lays emphasis on the histological diagnosis of chromogenic fungus in the wall of the abscess cavity, surgically removed from a well delineated circumscribed lesion in the frontal lobe of the cerebrum. The causative fungus could be detected even in unstained paraffin sections. The diagnosis could be made only after surgical removal and histopathological examination. The mycological culture could not be made as the material was received in formaldehyde fixative. The unique features of the case is its recurrence free uneventful survival five years after surgical excision. This is probably the fifth reported case of cerebral chromomycosis from India and first of its type from arid zone of Rajasthan.

[Need for more emphasis on fungal infection in burns].

We have made quantitative bacterial and fungal culture for 148 biopsy specimens from burn patients. Further confirmation was made by frozen section with PAS stain in 82 of the specimens. It was discovered that the fungal infections in these burn patients were characterized by early onset with multiple organisms. It was also found that the incidence of fungal infections was higher in severe burns. Two rare cases of fungal infection were discovered, one of them was infected by Geotrichum SP, and the patient died; the other an infection by Homodendrum SP on the face, and the finally recovered.
