Manual and automated methods for the determination of blood glucose have been devised using an oxidase/peroxidase system, with dl adrenaline, a non-carcinogen, as oxygen acceptor. The manual technique employs a stable single solution protein precipitant and the other reagents used are also stable. The automated methods are operated at 40/hr sample speed and washover between samples, over a very wide concentration range, is negligible.
After reviewing the literature on nicotinic acid in the treatment of schizophrenia, the authors present the results of the Canadian collaborative study. The data indicate that nicotinic acid has no therapeutic effect of schizophrenia.

Superoxide dismutase activity has been identified in both human neutrophils and rabbit alveolar macrophages by two distinct assay procedures. The enzyme is insensitive to both cyanide and azide and is present in the cytosol of the cell. The identification of this enzyme in phagocytic cells is compatible with the theory that superoxide anion might be involved in the bactericidal activity of the cell. It is proposed that the enzyme functions to protect the cell against superoxide generated during the phagocytic process.
Superoxide anion production by liver microsomes from intact, adrenalectomized, and cortisoltreated adrenalectomized rats has been determined. The amount formed was roughly proportionate to the amount of cortisol given, and a similar response was seen in the activity of NADPH-cytochrome c reductase. The amount of measurable superoxide anion was markedly reduced by the addition of superoxide dismutase. The increased production of this potent free radical with cortisol therapy suggests that its formation may contribute to some of the harmful effects of corticosteroids given in more than physiologic amounts.

Microcapsules whose membranes contained soybean lecithin (SL), cholesterol (CH), stearic acid (SA) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) at various compositions were prepared. Then, dissolution and swelling behaviors of the microcapsules in a 0.9% saline solution were studied to be related to the phase diagram of three components containing 42% of PVP in anhydrous state. In the aqueous solution, when an anhydrous microcapsule membrane was composed of SL not saturated with both CH and SA, the microcapsules showed rapid release of carbazochrome sodium sulfonate (CCSS, a model drug), poor particle-swelling and spouting of droplets containing CCSS. Long-delayed release of CCSS and drastic particle-swelling with no spouting of droplets were observed when the anhydrous membrane was composed of SL saturated with both CH and SA and the composition was not close to the two-component line, CH-SA, or to the saturation line. The spouting of droplets would be attributable to the CH and/or SA-poor SL phase and to the SL phase which dissolved CH and SA, but contained either CH or SA only in a small amount, and the delayed release would be due to the CH and SA-rich SL phase dissolving a great amount of CH and SA formed by hydration. The degree of release suppression and particle-swelling depended on the SL content. At 20-45% of SL content, the prolonged-release, great particle-swelling and no spouting of droplets at the early stage were observed only when the CH and SA-rich SL phase formed by hydration contained a high content of CH and SA.
The pharmacological actions of iprazochrome (IC) on the vascular system were studied, and the following results were obtained: No death nor abnormal behaviors were observed in acute toxicity tests conducted on male and female mice and rats despite the administration of large doses of IC (10,000 mg/kg, p.o. and 80 mg/kg, i.v., respectively). IC inhibited dose-dependently platelet aggregation in vitro induced by arachidonate and ADP, whereas no effect was observed on ADP-induced respiratory depression in mice, which is closely related to platelet aggregation in vivo. The antiserotonergic actions of IC on the isolated external carotid arteries and femoral arteries in dogs observed in a noncompetitive manner were found to be 1/24 to 1/65 that of methysergide. On the other hand, IC showed no inhibitory effect on the paw edema of rats in vivo induced by serotonin. The inhibitory effect of IC on peritoneal dye leakage in mice was less than half that of phenylbutazone. IC prevented apoplexy in stroke-prone SHR (SHRSP) without lowering the blood pressure. Histological changes in the cerebrum of SHRSP were ischemic changes such as swelling of the neurons and shrinkage of the nuclei, mainly in the cerebral cortex and corpus striatum area.
