Detection thresholds for electrocutaneous stimulation were measured in young male subjects by two different methods - a method of limits and a forced-choice method - the latter assumed to be less influenced by decision processes. Relations between the threshold measures and scores in the EPI extraversion (E) and neuroticism (N) scales were studied. High N-low E ("unstable introvert") subjects had the lowest thresholds. The result is in line with the predictions made on the basis of Eysenck's personality theory.

Rats that had received septal lesions either prior to acquisition of a position habit (Group SAR) or immediately after position habit acquisition (Group SR) were tested on two reversals of the task. Compared with control-operated rats, both groups of rats with septal lesions exhibited position-habit reversal deficits. The two groups with septal lesions could not be distinguished in terms of the total number of errors made during reversal learning, but could be distinguished on the basis of the type of error committed. Compared with Group SR, Group SAR made significantly more perservative errors on the first reversal and significantly fewer perserverative errors on the second reversal. Group SR made significantly more nonperservative errors than Group SAR on both reversals.
The effects of fluid deprivation on the sexually dimorphic rate of extinction of a conditioned taste aversion in rats was investigated. Under ad lib water conditions, males extinguished a conditioned taste aversion more slowly than females. However, when rats were fluid deprived, there was no difference in the extinction rates of females and males even when the more sensitive two-bottle test was used. This absence of the sexual dimorphism was due to a differential effect of deprivation on females and males. Fluid deprivation increased the rate of extinction of the male but had no effect on the extinction rate of the female. It was proposed that the more rapid extinction rate of the deprived male could be accounted for by a deprivation-induced change in a testosterone-dependent mechanism. This proposal was supported by demonstrating that injection of testosterone propionate blocked the effects of fluid deprivation on rate of extinction in the male rat.

Prior induced abortion and outcome of the next pregnancy are investigated, allowing for two intervening and potentially confounding variables: 1) length of interval between the termination of the first pregnancy and the conception of the next (inter-pregnancy interval) and 2) the utilization of contraception during this interval. Results show that non-contracepting (susceptibility) intervals which immediately precede a subsequent pregnancy are significantly shorter following an induced abortion than those following a spontaneous abortion or delivery. A life table analysis of all susceptibility intervals confirmed this finding. To investigate outcome of subsequent pregnancy as influenced by preceding pregnancy outcome, inter-pregnancy interval and contraceptive use in the interval, a categorical linear model has been developed. Among non-contraceptors, the model indicates no differences in proportions of succeeding adverse outcomes (spontaneous abortion or low birth weight) regardless of inter-pregnancy interval and whether or not the preceding pregnancy had been terminated by an induced abortion. For the contraceptive users, however, proportions of adverse outcomes increased with length of inter-pregnancy interval, and, within each interval category, proportion of adverse outcomes was higher when the preceding pregnancy had terminated in an induced abortion.

5-Bromouracil (5-BU) was shown to enhance reverse mutation rates when added to conidia of a rib-1 strain of Neurospora crassa previously irradiated with ultraviolet light. A comparison is presented between various incubation intervals in the presence and absence of 5-BU while varying the UV dose. An increase in mutation frequency ranging from 0.028 - 2.05 X 10(2) times greater than the spontaneous frequency, UV frequency alone or 5-BU frequency alone was observed when UV irradiation and 5-BU were combined.

Dextran 70 infusion into dogs prevents platelet adhesion to extracorporeal surfaces as effectively as direct coating of the surfaces with albumin. This is demonstrated by two experimental approaches. One of these involves a detailed analysis in 14 mongrel dogs of the effects of hemoperfusion on the systemic platelet levels, hematocrits, and dextran concentrations. The second approach is in the form of 23 platelet retention tests carried out in four mongrel dogs.
