MOTIVATION: A major issue in computational biology is the reconstruction of pathways from several genomic datasets, such as expression data, protein interaction data and phylogenetic profiles. As a first step toward this goal, it is important to investigate the amount of correlation which exists between these data. RESULTS: These methods are successfully tested on their ability to recognize operons in the Escherichia coli genome, from the comparison of three datasets corresponding to functional relationships between genes in metabolic pathways, geometrical relationships along the chromosome, and co-expression relationships as observed by gene expression data.

Arabinoxylans (AX) are cell wall polysaccharides of complex structure involved in many aspects of wheat flour end uses. The study of the variations of AX structure can lead to the identification of genes involved in their biosynthesis, and thus in the control of the various aspects of grain quality related to their presence. A method is proposed to identify AX variations directly in whole grain by enzymatic degradation. An endoxylanase from Trichoderma viride was used to extract AX from a collection of 20 wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.). Enzymatic degradation products were analyzed by HPAEC and multivariate analysis techniques (principal component analysis, canonical correlation analysis, and cluster analysis) were applied to analyze chromatographic data. The method evidenced variations in the proportion of mono- and disubstitution of the xylan backbone by arabinose side chains, allowing classification of the different varieties according to the structural features of AX. A similar classification was obtained starting from flour or whole grain, indicating that the method was specific of AX from endosperm tissues. In conclusion, the method combining endoxylanase treatment of wheat grain and the analysis of degradation products, e.g., enzymatic fingerprinting, can be applied to collections of wheat cultivars, and possibly other cereals in order to establish quantitative trait loci related to the biosynthesis of AX.
The cognitive social-learning-theory literature on alcohol abuse points to failure to generate appropriate alternative behaviors to drinking as a major predictor of relapse to drinking. Viewing drinking as a continuous variable, ranging from abstinence to abuse, it should be possible to demonstrate a relationship between problem-solving abilities and drinking patterns. The hypothesis that individuals' perceived problem-solving skills are related to their pattern of alcohol use was examined. It was expected that poorer perceived problem-solving skills would be related to maladaptive use of alcohol in response to problem situations. 192 students in Introductory Psychology at a midsized southern university participated. Each subject completed questionnaires assessing frequency and quantity of alcohol use, and stimuli associated with the onset of drinking. The Problem-solving Inventory was used to measure perceived problem-solving skills. Drinking pattern variables were formed by factor analysis. Canonical correlation analysis of the data supported the hypotheses. Students with lower confidence in problem-solving capabilities reported greater use of alcohol to cope with negative emotions and to escape from responsibilities than students with high confidence in their abilities. Amount of alcohol consumed was not related to problem-solving skills.
The potential of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy to measure the main inorganic components of seawater as salt-manufacturing materials was investigated. A total of 72 seawater samples collected from six locations was used, and spectra (1100-1800 nm) were acquired by a NIR spectrophotometer with a 1-mm path length. Principal component analysis (PCA), canonical correlation analysis (CCA), and partial least-squares (PLS) regression were performed based on the reference inorganic components. As a result, the principal component analysis and canonical correlation analysis showed that the near-infrared spectra could be related to the inorganic components of seawater. The partial least-squares regression analysis showed that the inorganic components (ion concentration of Cl, Na+, K+, SO4(2-), and Ca2+) could be predicted with good accuracy using NIR spectra and their second derivatives. For Cl ion and K+ ion concentrations, the accuracy was high.
In order to explore an association between psychiatric disorders and employment level, 283 local government officials in Japan were asked to complete a questionnaire consisting of a series of psychometric scales. The Daily Hassles Scale, General Health Questionnaire and Burnout Scale were used to measure stress, psychiatric disorders and burnout syndrome, respectively. As a result of canonical correlation analysis, the first canonical correlation indicated that the higher the level of stress under poorer support systems, the greater the likelihood of burnout syndrome. The second canonical correlation indicated that the stronger the support system, the smaller the tendency toward depression. Officials in higher levels of employment were supported less and were more severely depressed than officials at lower levels of employment.
The distribution and structure of the allelic polymorphism data are analyzed and it is pointed out that the distribution of allelic polymorphism data reveals the characteristic of closed data (also named as compositional data or data of constant sum). It is interpreted that the correlation structure of the allelic polymorphism data contains null correlations introduced by "closure" and the statistical distribution of the data is not normal because of its constant row sum, which resulted in great difficulties in analyzing the data with traditional multiple linear statistical methods such as principal component analysis, factor analysis, cluster analysis and canonical correlation analysis. Based on the theory of compositional data analysis proposed by Aitchison in 1982, a multiple nonlinear statistical method originating from the "logratios" approach to the statistical analysis of compositional data is put forward in this paper. As an example, the "logratios" method was used to analyze the genetic structure of TH01 polymorphic loci in Chinese population and the results were compared with those of multiple linear methods such as component principal. It is concluded that the "logratios" multiple nonlinear principle component analysis is a better method with the virtue of sensitivity and specificity for analyzing the genetic structure of population from the data of allelic polymorphism.
This study investigates the relationships among hematological variables, pulmonary function, and age in a sample of high-altitude natives. The following anthropometric and physiological variables were examined in 77 adult Quechua males from the Peruvian Central Andes (Huancavelica, 3,680 m): height, weight, sitting height, chest diameters, chest and abdominal circumferences, forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume at 1 sec (FEV1), peak expiratory flow (PEF), hemoglobin concentration (Hb), red blood cells (RBC), hematocrit (Htc), diastolic and systolic blood pressure, body temperature, pulmonary rate, and pulse rate. The means of these variables for the Huancavelica sample fall within the range of variability previously observed in Andean populations. Principal components analysis and canonical correlation analysis suggest that in this native Andean population: 1) aging decreases lung function but does not affect hematological features, and 2) there is a negative age-independent correlation between lung function (FVC, FEV1, PEF) and hematological traits (Hb, RBC, Htc).
The relationship of health beliefs, health locus of control, and the frequency of practice of breast self-examination in women was explored through use of a survey. Health beliefs alone and health beliefs combined with internal health locus of control were found to predict the frequency of practice of breast self-examination in a sample of 48 women. The combined variables of health beliefs, internal health locus of control, religion, and occupation explained 80% of the variance in nonpractice and 73.3% of the variance for high practice. Moderate frequency practice was not a significant predictor of breast self-examination. Discriminant function analysis, canonical correlation, and analysis of variance were used in the data analysis.
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the concurrent validity of a new type of personality inventory (NPI) which has been constructed by the present authors. For this purpose, we conducted three kinds of studies. The first one was to find the relationship of the 13 scales of the NPI with the 12 scales of YG personality inventory. Factor analysis and canonical correlation analysis were employed for the study. It was found that the NPI measured relatively wider area of personality traits as compared with the YG inventory. The second and the third studies were concerned with the concurrent validity of the NPI. The inventory was applied to both six hundred company workers and two hundred university students, and they were classified into adjusted and maladjusted groups respectively according to their responses to a questionnaire aimed at measuring the adaptability to jobs or to majors. Results showed that the 13 scales of the NPI had a strong predictive power in the sense of the concurrent validity. Further studies are needed in order to measure the predictive validity of all the scales of the present personality inventory.
In the epidemiologic study of chronic diseases, especially that of cancer and heart disease, it is often necessary to resort not only to the work of epidemiologists but also to that of mathematicians and statisticians. The present study is an application of two main methods of multivariate analysis -- factorial analysis and canonical correlation analysis -- to the determination of the evolution of the risk to develop coronary heart disease in an urban population.
BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to investigate the validity of the prototype-matching, empirically based 200-item Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure (SWAP-200) and its clinical utility for describing underlying dimensions of psychostructural organization and functioning. SAMPLING AND METHODS: Patients (n = 306) from two psychoanalytic out-patient departments were included. Replicatory and exploratory factor analysis, correlation and discriminant validity statistics, and canonical correlation analysis were performed. RESULTS: Replicatory factor analysis failed to reproduce the identical original factorial structure. Standard factor analysis revealed an eight-factor solution displaying a dimensional description of psychostructural personality organization (high functioning - neurotic/inhibited - borderline/emotionally dysregulated - psychotic/dissocial). Discriminant validity exists across the sample owing to high/poor psychological functioning. Canonical correlation analysis does not support the replacement of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, but provides relevant implications for refining DSM-IV axis II. CONCLUSIONS: Support is given for the SWAP instrument in describing dimensional higher-order personality organization and psychostructural functioning.
