Sexual life and sexual frigidity among women developing acute myocardial infarction.

The various aspects of the sexual life of 100 female patients aged 40-60 with acute myocardial infarction were compared with those of a control group of 100 female patients of the same age, hospitalized for other diseases. Sexual frigidity and dissatisfaction were found among 65% of the coronary patients as compared with 24% of the controls. The commonest cause for sexual dissatisfaction was premature ejaculation or impotence in the husband. The incidence of premarital sexual relations was greater among the frigid patients when compared with those who achieved orgasm. The coronary patients had an earlier menopausal age than the controls. The number of coronary patients who underwent artificial abortions in the past was lower than in the control group. All these findings were statistically significant at a level of P less than 0.05. No connection was found between extramarital relations and sexual frigidity. There was no relation found between sexual frigidity and diabetes, essential hypertension, marital status, pathological gynecological findings, or localization of the infarction. Until now, sexual frigidity and dissatisfaction appear to have been a neglected aspect in the female coronary patient.

Older women in developing countries.

Women's issues are markedly underrepresented in international policy and research discussions. This paper addresses these deficits by delineating the particular conditions of aging women in developing countries. While these women experience many of the age-related problems as their counterparts in developed countries, cultural and economic influences place them at a greater disadvantage.

Older women's development: a comparison of women in their 60s and 80s on a measure of Erikson's developmental tasks.

This study compared older women from two age groups in order to refine and extend our understanding of women's development across the life span. Forty-one women from two cohorts aged 60 to 70 and 80 to 90 completed the Measures of Psychosocial Development (MPD), a quantitative measure of Erikson's developmental stages. Age group differences in the resolution of Erikson's identity and trust developmental tasks were found. In addition, these two groups differed on the three summary scales: totals across the positive subscales, negative subscales, and resolution subscales respectively. Implications for women's late life development and possible interventions are discussed.

Frequency of antibody to BK antigen in women whose children developed malignancies and women who developed detectable carcinoma in situ of the cervix during this pregnancy.

Paired sera from 21 women whose children had malignancy and 15 women who were diagnosed as having abnormal pathology in the cervix and matched normal controls were studied for presence of BK antibodies by the ELISA technique. BK antibody was detected in 74% of the women in the first serum sample obtained. Evidence of BK antibody rises were observed in eight of 72 women (11%) and was distributed equally among women with abnormal children and women with abnormal pathology in the cervix and controls and that the level of antibody was not influenced by vaccination with killed polio vaccine during this pregnancy. Our serological data fails to show an association between infection with BK virus and malignancy in the children or carcinoma in situ of the cervix.

Longitudinal changes in maternal serum 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D and insulin like growth factor I levels in pregnant women who developed preeclampsia: comparison with normotensive pregnant women.

This study was undertaken to determine the longitudinal changes of serum 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25-(OH)(2)D) and insulin like growth factor I (IGF-I) levels at 20.7, 27.6, and 35.5 week periods of gestation in 40 pregnant women who remained normotensive (NT) and in 10 women who developed preeclampsia (PE). As compared with the first period, significant increases (P < 0.01) in maternal serum 1,25-(OH)(2)D and IGF-I were observed in the NT group. In the PE group, a similar increase in serum 1,25-(OH)(2)D was observed. In contrast, significant (P < 0.05) lower IGF-I levels were observed in the PE group at the moment of diagnosis. In addition a high incidence of subjects with low increase in IGF-I levels (<percentile 10) was found in the PE group (30% versus 5%, P = 0.02). In conclusion, circulating levels of 1,25-(OH)(2)D were not alterated in women before they developed PE. In the opposite, the high percentage of PE women with low increase in circulating IGF-I levels between the 20th and 35th week of pregnancy suggests early alterations of IGF-I synthesis in women developing PE.
