Time-related changes in skin thickness have been evaluated in the pig using a noninvasive ultrasound technique after exposure to a range of single doses of 0.97 MeV beta particles from (170)Tm plaques. The reduction in relative skin thickness developed in two phases; the separation into two phases was statistically justified only after 120 Gy (P = 0.04). The first phase was between 12 weeks and 24 weeks after irradiation. No further changes were seen until 48-60 weeks after irradiation, when a second phase of skin thinning was observed. No further changes in relative skin thickness were seen in the follow-up period of 104 weeks. The timing of these phases of relative skin thinning was totally independent of the radiation dose; however, the severity of each phase of radiation-induced skin thinning was related to the dose. The pattern of changes was similar to that reported previously after irradiation with 2.27 MeV beta particles from (90)Sr/(90)Y, but the degree of dermal thinning was less for a similar skin surface dose. From a comparison of the depth-dose distribution of the beta particles from the two radionuclides, it was concluded that the target cell population responsible for both the first and second phase of skin thinning in pig skin after irradiation may be located at approximately 800 microm depth. This corresponds to an area in the reticular dermis in pig skin and may be the appropriate site at which to measure the average dose to the dermal tissue.

(Tb1-x Tmx).L2.(ClO4).2H2O(x = 0.000 to 0.200, L = C6H5SOCH2COO-) have been synthesized. The coordination compounds have been studied by means of composition analysis, molar conductivity, IR, and the condition of coordination have been inferred. In the fluorescent spectra it was found that Tm3+ has a strongly sensitization effect to the fluorescence of Tb3+. The fluorescent emission intensity of Terbium perchlorate with phenylcarboxymethyl sulfoxide coordination compounds would be enhanced by Tm3+ in mixing. Tm3+ has a sensitization to the fluorescence of Tb3+ in the ratio of Tb3+:Tm3+ = 0.999:0.001-0.900:0.100. In the solubility experiment it was found that the complexes have high solubility in ethanol.
The spectral interferences of Lu, Tm, Y and Yb (100 microns.mL-1, separately) as matrices on the other REEs (1 or 5 microns.mL-1) were observed with a high resolution ICP-AES with a grating of 3,600 grooves.mm-1. Totally 66 analytical lines of 15 REEs were selected as the prominent lines for spectral interference studies. The "Q" values and "the true detection limit" were calculated for the selected prominent lines with the exist of the four matrix elements. The obtained information is useful in the selection of the best analytical lines for the determination of REEs in the other REEs' matrices.

Laser welding offers several potential advantages over suture closure, including improved healing, lack of a nidus for stone formation, and greater speed and ease. We examined in vitro gallbladder cystic duct welds created by two different systems, the thulmium-holmium-chromium (THC):YAG (2,150 nm) and argon ion (488-514 nm) lasers, in an effort to define suitable parameters for tissue fusion. Mean bursting pressures for argon welds were 95 mm Hg at 1.5 W CW and 26 mm Hg at 1.5 W, 50 msec chopped delivery. For the THC:YAG laser, the mean bursting pressure for welds created with 300 mJ pulses was 45 mm Hg. Full-thickness tissue fusion and limited collateral thermal damage were observed histologically for both the CW argon and pulsed THC:YAG welds. Examination of the suggested mechanisms of tissue fusion for these photothermal lasers suggests that increased duration of tissue heating at the appropriate temperature results in more extensive collagen crosslinking and a stronger weld.
The new stable, neutral Tm(II) complex (Cp(ttt))2Tm [Cp(ttt) = 1,2,4-tris(tert-butyl)cyclopentadienyl] can be obtained either by direct reaction of NaCp(ttt) with TmI2 or by reduction of (Cp(ttt))2TmI in non-polar solvents; this latter route may prove itself useful for the isolation of other neutral non-classical low-valent organolanthanide species.
