DISAPPEARANCE OF A GENETIC MARKER FROM A CYTOPLASMIC HYBRID PLASMODIUM OF A TRUE SLIME MOLD.

Two strains of the true slime mold Didymium nigripes form distinctive plaques when their spores are plated clonally. Strain C6 gives rise to plaques surrounded by large plasmodia. Plaques of strain A20 at first contain only amoebas, the formation of plasmodia being delayed; and strain A20 is resistant to cycloheximide. Plasmodia of C6 and A20 were fused, and at intervals the fused plasmodia were cut into segments and each segment was permitted to fruit. The resulting spores were plated clonally and the plaques scored as C6-type or A20-type. When equal-sized C6 and A20 plasmodia were fused, the A20 characteristic of delayed plasmodium formation disappeared with time so that after 8 hours few A20 plaques could be recovered even from the A20 side of the fused plasmodium. When the ratio between sizes of C6 and A20 plasmodia to be fused was varied, similar results were obtained. The A20 characteristic did not disappear until fruiting.

CELLULAR SEGREGATION AND HETEROCYTIC DOMINANCE IN HYDRA.

Hydra heterocytes-that is, hydra containing cells from both normal and mutant animals, were used for studying some developmental properties of mixed cell populations. Cells which initially had originated from a nonbudding mutant, and which subsequently became part of a heterocyte of normal appearance, were able to proliferate, to segregate, to come off as buds, and to express their phenotype in those buds. Furthermore, the heterocytes underwent a transformation in which the mutant phenotype eventually became dominant in all instances.

CELL PROLIFERATION IN HYDRA: AN AUTORADIOGRAPHIC APPROACH.

Hydra cells take up substantial amounts of tritiated thymidine if the label is injected into an animal's gastric cavity shortly after feeding. Autoradiographic analysis shows that the isotope becomes incorporated into cell nuclei. The distribution of labeled nuclei probably represents the pattern of cell proliferation and is similar to the distribution of mitotic figures in histological preparations. The data show that cell proliferation is distributed along the body column and that there is no localized growth zone.

A SAMPLE SURVEY OF SELECTED AREAS IN AND NEAR LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS, TO ASSESS THE PREVALENCE OF ENTAMOEBA HISTOLYTICA.

Laboratory confirmed clinical amoebiasis was diagnosed among more than 50 persons by the University of Arkansas Medical Center from 1965 to 1961. The presence of this number of patients prompted an investigation into the prevalence of Entamoeba histolytica in four selected areas in and around Little Rock, Arkansas. The results of the study, using a sample survey technique, showed that it is possible to have a seemingly large number of clinically significant cases of amoebiasis in a population without a high prevalence of the parasite. Evidence was also obtained of the beneficial effects of improvements in sanitary facilities, as reflected in the lower amoebic prevalence rate in a 0-4-year age-group from one of the four areas surveyed in which a piped, indoor city-water supply and sewage facilities had been installed six years previously.
