In a new era of increased concern about sexually transmitted diseases, the ethical focus of contraceptive counseling for the early adolescent has changed. "This essay...examines the abortion option [using] two standard economic welfare criteria, efficiency and equity, to evaluate different distributions of property rights." The author critically examines a 1971 article by Judith Jarvis Thomson concerning fetal personhood and the maternal right to privacy. He asserts that "the efficiency of different output allocations and even output and wealth as such are neither ethically neutral nor ordinally invariant but depend on the range of property rights and distributions, wealth-constrained valuations, and populations considered. The results suggest that, insofar as claims of efficiency and equity are met or accepted as appropriate, economic criteria may affect the constitution of justice and behavior as legal and normative constraints."

The discussion on ethical problems in reproductive medicine that has been going on for quite a decade, is of an exemplary nature; it is mainly focussed on extracorporeal fertilisation, prenatal diagnosis with a view to abortion, and post partum diagnosis and treatment of genetic diseases. The fundamental problems of medical ethics in general come to the fore particularly clearly in this discussion. The following article deals with these fundamental problems, whereas a subsequent article will be concerned in greater detail with the three special disciplines I have just mentioned.

Some factors that determine the development and diffusion of medical technologies are discussed. The use of technology in pregnancy and labor cannot be seen as a response to user needs or the result of societal planning alone. Often technologies are developed and diffused without any evaluation of their risks and benefits. The relations between medical research and industrial interests are focused on to explain the development, and against this background user interests and women's strategies as users and providers of health care are discussed.
