Feeding value of poultry by-products extruded with cassava, barley, and wheat middlings for broiler chicks: the effect of ensiling poultry by-products as a preservation method prior to extrusion.

In one experiment, six treatment diets including two levels of cassava meal, barley, or wheat middlings extruded with poultry by-products (PBP; a 3:1 ratio of broiler offal and condemned carcasses) were compared with a corn and soybean meal control diet for broiler performance from 1 d to 3 wk of age. No treatment differences in body weight (P > .05) were observed, and all chicks averaged 166, 421, and 788 g at 1, 2, and 3 wk of age, respectively. Weight gain and feed consumption were not affected by the experimental diets (P < .05). Birds fed the control diet had better overall feed conversion (1.24) than birds fed the diet containing 20% extruded barley and PBP (1.37) (P < .05). Feeding PBP extruded with cassava (10 and 20%) or barley (10%) resulted in equal broiler performance at less cost than birds fed the control diet. In a second experiment, 10% sucrose was mixed with PBP by weight and ensiled for 7 d at ambient temperatures in an anaerobic vessel. Diets containing cassava extruded with fresh and ensiled PBP (FR-PBP and EN-PBP, respectively) were compared with control diets (CON) for broilers to 6 wk of age. No differences in body weight were observed by 6 wk. Feed conversion of the CON birds was poorer than the birds fed the FR-PBP (P < .05). Chilled carcass yield was better for the CON compared with the EN-PBP treatment; however, dietary treatment had no effect on the percentage breast meat, thigh, drumstick, wing, or cage.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Use of delayed secondary enrichment for the isolation of Salmonella in poultry and poultry environments.

A conventional method of isolating Salmonella was compared with isolation using novobiocin-supplemented plating media and delayed secondary enrichment (DSE). The DSE greatly increased the ability to isolate Salmonella from poultry and environmental samples. Four hundred sixty-four isolations of Salmonella were made from a total of 4377 cultures (11%). Two hundred sixty-nine (58%) isolations of Salmonella were made following the 24-hour incubation; of these, 43 (9%) isolates were isolated only at this time. In comparison, a total of 421 (91%) Salmonella were isolated by DSE, of which 195 isolates (42%) were isolated only with DSE. The addition of novobiocin to the selective plating medium increased the isolation rate for Salmonella and reduced the level of contaminating bacteria growing on the plate.

[Tentative organisation of disease recording in the poultry production. Collection and processing of condemnation results from 6 poultry slaughterhouses in Northern Jutland (author's transl)].

According to condemnation lists collected from 6 poultry slaughterhouses in northern Jutland there has been an increase in condemnation rate for broilers from 0.8 to 1.0% (Table I). The most important causes of condemnation have been emaciation, CRD, hock disorder and enteritis (Table II). Only a few slaughterhouses were involved in processing of hens, turkeys and web-footed birds showing inconstant distributions (Tables III and IV). Variation among slaughterhouses appears from Tables II-IV. The cause of variation and the value of central disease recording are discussed.

[Studies on theory and models of systemic conservation of animal and poultry genetic resources. II. Simulation experiment of systemic conservation of animal and poultry genetic resources].

Tribolium castaneum simulation and computer simulation proved the feasibility and rationality of Systemic Conservation of Animal and Poultry Genetic Resources (SCAPGR) theory and the biological meaning of the SCAPGR mathematical models. It also demonstrated that the right effective population size should be maintained and gene flow among populations should be controlled and adequate selecting method and mating system should determined according to population genetic characters of gene conserved in the SCAPGR population.

[Studies on theory and models of systemic conservation of animal and poultry genetic resources. I. Theory analysis of systemic conservation of animal and poultry genetic resources].

The concept and fundamentals of Systemic Conservation of Animal and Poultry Genetics Resources (SCAPGR) and mathematical models of genetic structure with conservation population were proposed. The SCAPGR regarded all genes of a given species in definite time and space as conservation object and live animal preservation combining with modern biotechnology as basic method. The SCAPGR might systematically conserve genes controlling the characters of a given species as well as regional varieties. In a no overlapping generation population with selection, mutation migration and random drift under consideration, two mathematical models presented in this paper might describe change of frequencies of multiple alleles at a locus and population mean of metrical characters resp.

Similarity of avian paramyxovirus serotype 1 isolates of low virulence for chickens obtained from contaminated poultry vaccines and from poultry flocks.

At present Denmark has the status of a 'non-vaccinating' country for Newcastle disease and its poultry population should therefore be free of antibodies to avian paramyxovirus 1 (APMV-1). Three live avian vaccines against infectious bronchitis, avian encephalomyelitis, and chick anaemia which had been found to be contaminated with APMV-1 viruses of low virulence for chickens were examined. The vaccines were produced by the same company and the affected batches had been used in Denmark in 1996/97. Furthermore, APMV-1 isolates of low virulence were obtained from three commercial broiler breeder flocks, one of which had been vaccinated with two of the contaminated vaccines. The flocks belonged to the same hatchery organisation. A comparison of viral F0 gene sequences and typing of virus isolates with a panel of monoclonal antibodies showed that the vaccine and field isolates were identical.

The isolation of salmonellae from poultry carcasses and equipment in the poultry processing plant by means of two procedures.

A total of 235 samples (swabs, rinse and organs) from freshly dressed broiler carcasses and from equipment of poultry processing plant were examined for the presence of salmonellae by means of motility enrichment on modified semisolid Rappaport medium (SAM) and of a conventional cultural procedure using Rappaport-Vassiliadis broth (R-VB) as selective enrichment. In 61 samples (26%), Salmonella was isolated by means of one or both procedures. The highest contamination with Salmonella was found in the rinse of broiler carcasses (35.5%), followed by swabs of equipment (32.0%), tissues of organs (31.0%) and swabs of carcasses (19.7%). Twelve different serotypes and 65 strains of salmonellae were detected. S. saint paul and S. enteritidis were the most frequent serotypes. Statistical analysis showed that there was no significant difference between the procedures.
