Electron spin resonance study of phosphorus-nitroxides from 1,3-additions of silicon-phosphorus reagents to nitrones.

This article explores a new, convenient route to beta-phosphorus nitroxides. Specifically, the reaction sequence involves the novel 1,3-addition of trimethylsilyl phosphites (e.g. diethyl) or trimethylsilyl phosphines (e.g. diphenyl) to aldo-nitrones [e.g. alpha-phenyl-N-tert-butylnitrone (PBN) or 5,5-dimethyl-l-pyrroline-N-oxide (DMPO)] or keto-nitrones [e.g. 2-ethyl-5,5-dimethyl-1 pyrroline-N-oxide (2-Et-DMPO) or 2-phenyl-5,5-dimethyl-l-pyrroline-N-oxide (2-Ph-DMPO)] to form alpha-phosphityl- or alpha-phosphinyl-O-silylhydroxylamines. Acidic hydrolysis provides the corresponding hydroxylamines that are easily oxidized to the title beta-phosphorus-nitroxides. ESR spectroscopic analysis revealed some very large beta-phosphorus hyperfine splittings (i.e. in excess of 5 mT). For this reason and their remarkable stability (persistence) some of these nitroxides show promise as integral components in new, improved weak-field dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) magnetometers.

A comparison of the rates of methylation of mercury(II) species in aquatic media by various organotin and organosilicon moieties.

Metals can be methylated in environmental aqueous media by a variety of organotin and organosilicon compounds. Main group metals and metalloids were surveyed for the identification of species that can either donate or accept methyl groups. The methylation of mercury(II) by trimethyltin cation was found to be a bimolecular reaction, the reaction rate of which decreased with increasing chloride concentration. Kinetic investigations using NMR techniques showed that the most important pairs of reactants were (CH3)3Sn+ + HgCl2, (CH3)3SnCl + HgCl2, and (CH3)3SnCl + HgCl-3. Sodium 2,2,3,3-tetradeutero-3-(trimethylsilyl)propionate (TSP) and sodium 2,2-dimethyl-2-silapentane-5-sulfonate (DSS) were found to methylate mercury(II). Organylsilatranes were found to transfer their organic groups readily to mercury(II) to produce organomercury compounds.

2-Diphenylmethylsilylethyl (DPSE): a versatile protecting group for oligodeoxyribonucleotide synthesis.

2-Diphenylmethylsilylethyl (DPSE) is a new protecting group for the internucleotidic bonds in the solid-support and solution-phase synthesis of oligodeoxyribonucleotides by the phosphoramidite approach. This group is stable under acidic conditions and can be removed by a beta-fragmentation mechanism under mild conditions using aqueous NH4OH. Alternatively, this group can also be removed using tetrafluorosilane in acetonitrile.

Analysis of heterocyclic aromatic amines in foods by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry as their tert.-butyldimethylsilyl derivatives.

A derivatization method for the analysis of 12 heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAs) in food, by gas chromatography-electron impact mass spectrometry, was developed. The amines are derivatized in a one-step reaction with N-methyl-N-(tert.-butyldimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide. The derivatives are characterized by easy-to-interpret mass spectra due to the prominent ion [M-57]+ by loss of a tert.-butyldimethylsilyl group, allowing quantification in the selected-ion monitoring mode at the picogram level. The effect of temperature, time, and reagents on the formation of the derivatives was monitored in detail. Quality parameters were evaluated in the optimum working conditions. This derivatization method is not applicable to the pyridoimidazoles Glu-P-1 and Glu-P-2 and to the beta-carboline harman due to incompletely derivatization. The instability of the imidazolquinoline and imidazoquinoxaline derivatives, requiring their injection on the same working day, is a further drawback. This simple, rapid and accurate derivatization procedure is suitable for routine analysis, as illustrated by the analysis of some common foods.

Determination of ethephon residues in water by gas chromatography with cubic mass spectrometry after ion-exchange purification and derivatisation with N-(tert-butyldimethylsilyl)-N-methyltrifluoroacetamide.

An analytical method has been developed for the determination of residues of ethephon (2-chloroethyl phosphonic acid) in drinking and surface water. The procedure is based on de-ionisation with an anion/cation-exchange resin, solid phase extraction by means of anion-exchange polystyrene-divinylbenzene extraction disks, elution with a mixture of methanol and 10 M hydrochloric acid (98/2, v/v), redisolution into acetonitrile after evaporation and silylation with N-(tert-butyldimethylsilyl)-N-methyltrifluoroacetamide (MTBSTFA). Quantification is performed by gas chromatography with ion-trap cubic mass spectrometric detection in the electron impact mode (GC-EI-MS3). Method validation was conducted using samples of mineral, tap, and river water that were fortified with ethephon at concentration levels ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 microg/L. The mean recovery from all the fortified samples (n = 36) amounted to 88% with a relative standard deviation of 17%. The method, therefore, was shown to allow accurate determination of ethephon residues in drinking and surface water with a limit of quantification of 0.1 microg/L.

The effect of Ge, Si and Sn phthalocyanine photosensitizers on cell proliferation and viability of human oesophageal carcinoma cells.

The photodynamic activity of water soluble mixed sulfonated metallophthalocyanines complexes: GePcSmix, SnPcSmix and SiPcSmix on human oesophageal carcinoma (SNO) cells are reported, and compared with the activity of the unmetallated H2PcSmix and of the newly synthesized water soluble adjacently substituted binaphthalo phthalocyanine (complex 3). The alkaline phosphate (ALP) showed damage to the cell membrane in the presence of complex 3 without irradiation. The GePcSmix complex caused a relatively large increase in inflammation and a high intracellular ATP.

Effect of cation-exchange pretreatment of aqueous soil extracts on the gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric determination of nerve agent hydrolysis products after tert.-butyldimethylsilylation.

The efficiency of pretreatment of aqueous soil extracts using a cation-exchange resin has been investigated by gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric (GC-MS) determination of nerve agent hydrolysis products after tert.-butyldimethylsilyl (TBDMS) derivatization. An aqueous solution containing methylphosphonic acid (MPA) and its monoalkyl esters, ethyl methylphosphonic acid, isopropyl methylphosphonic acid and pinacolyl methylphosphonic acid, was dried, and these phosphonic acids were derivatized with N-methyl-N-(tert.-butyldimethylsilyl)trifluoro-acetamide and analyzed by GC-MS. The yields of TBDMS derivatives were significantly decreased by the addition of calcium and magnesium ions to an aqueous solution (approximately 0.5 mM) before derivatization. The extent of lowered yields was related to the hydrophilicity of phosphonic acids. MPA and its monoalkyl esters were spiked into soil samples (sand, alluvial soil and volcanic ash soil), extracted with distilled water, dried, silylated and applied to GC-MS. The yields of TBDMS derivatives of monoalkyl esters from soil samples were low (3-42%) and MPA derivative was scarcely detected (yield: < 0.7%). By desalting the aqueous soil extract by passage through a strong cation-exchange resin, the yields of TBDMS derivatives of monoalkyl esters were significantly improved (12-69%) and MPA derivative was detected (yield: 2-36%). The extent of improved yields was related to the concentrations of divalent metal cations in aqueous soil extracts. In combination with desalting by the cation-exchange resin, GC-MS after TBDMS derivatization enables detection of nerve agent hydrolysis products in soils at sub-ppm (0.2 microgram/g) concentrations.

Determination of the main hydrolysis product of O-ethyl S-2-diisopropylaminoethyl methylphosphonothiolate, ethyl methylphosphonic acid, in human serum.

For the unequivocal proof of the use of a nerve agent O-ethyl S-2-diisopropylaminoethyl methylphosphonothiolate (VX), a rapid, accurate and sensitive method which allows us to identify its main hydrolysis product ethyl methylphosphonic acid (EMPA) in human serum was explored by GC-MS. GC-MS analysis was performed after solvent extraction with acetonitrile in acidic conditions from the serum sample, which was previously deproteinized by micro-ultrafiltration, and subsequent tert.-butyldimethylsilyl derivatization with N-methyl-N-(tert.-butyldimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide (MTBSTFA) with 1% tert.-butyldimethylsilyl chloride (t-BDMSC). Linear calibration curves were obtained in the concentration range from 50 to 500 ng/ml for EMPA in the full-scan EI mode and from 5 to 50 ng/ml for EMPA in the SIM EI mode. The relative standard deviation obtained at a sample concentration of 50 ng/ml was 8.4% in the full-scan mode and 7.3% in the SIM mode. Upon applying the full-scan EI and CI mode, 40 ng/ml and 80 ng/ml were the detection limits. Using the SIM-EI mode, in which the ion at m/z 153 was chosen, the limit was 3 ng/ml.

X-[1H, 19F] triple resonance with a X-[1H] CP MAS probe and characterisation of a 29Si-19F spin pair.

An economic approach for implementing X-[1H,19F] double-decoupling MAS NMR experiments with a conventional X-[1H] dual-channel CP MAS probe is demonstrated. The parameters characterising the isolated 29Si-19F spin pair in an organosilicon compound R(3)SiF (R = 9-anthryl) are determined. In addition, we discuss the optimum choice of experimental parameters for determining all 29Si-19F spin-pair parameters from straightforward 29Si MAS NMR spectra with only 1H decoupling applied during acquisition.

29Si and 19F MAS NMR spectra of isolated 29Si(19F)2 and 29Si(19F)3 spin systems: experiments and simulations.

We consider 29Si and 19F MAS NMR spectra of isolated 29Si(19F)2 and 29Si(19F)3 spin systems in two organosilicon compounds of the type RR'SiF2 and RSiF3(R,R' = organic ligands). Experimental spectra are analysed by means of numerical simulations. It is found that the SiF3 group in RSiF3 is reorienting rapidly around the molecular Si-C bond direction in the solid state. The two 19F shielding tensors in RR'SiF2 have strongly differing orientations relative to the two Si-F bond directions in the molecule. Possibilities and limitations of straightforward MAS NMR approaches for the full characterisation of 29Si(19F)2 and 29Si(19F)3 spin systems and other dipolar coupled two and three-spin systems are discussed.

Vibrational study of (CH3)4NSbCl6 and [(CH3)4N]2SiF6.

(CH3)4NSbCl6 and [(CH3)4N]2SiF6 are face-centred cubic compounds at ambient temperature with a = 11.548 and 11.172 A, respectively. The vibrational spectra of these two compounds are discussed in relation to their crystal structure and other compounds containing (CH3)4N+ ions. The assignment of the observed bands is discussed. The Raman and infrared spectra of [(CH3)4N]2SiF6 show that the cations and anions are not distorted inside the crystals and are weakly hydrogen-bonded to each other. The infrared spectrum of (CH3)4NSbCl6 confirms a cubic structure for this compound at ambient temperature, in which cations are in octahedral environments and can be interpreted as being disordered groups. No evidence could be found for the existence of hydrogen bonding between cations and anions in this compound. The phase transition of (CH3)4NSbCI6 is studied by means of Raman spectroscopy. It is believed to be governed by the reorientational motions of tetramethylammonium cations and may be classified as an 'order-disorder' type.

Pressure-tuning infrared and Raman spectroscopy of group 14 tetraphenyl compounds.

The effect of high external pressures on the vibrational spectra of the tetraphenyl Group 14 compounds, Ph4M (M = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb), were examined between ambient pressure and 40 kbar with the aid of a diamond-anvil cell. The four compounds displayed similar behaviour as the pressure was increased and a structural transition at approximately 15 kbar, most probably associated with a phenyl ring rotation, was identified in each case. The pressure dependencies of selected vibrational modes were obtained.

Substituent effects on the reactivity of the silicon-carbon double bond.

Laser flash photolysis of various organosilicon compounds such as aryl-, vinyl-, and alkynyldisilanes, silacyclobutanes and silacyclobutenes, and alpha-silylketenes and -diazomethanes leads to the formation of reactive silenes which can be detected directly in solution, allowing detailed studies of the kinetics and mechanisms of their reactions with nucleophiles. Over 30 transient silenes have now been studied by these methods, providing the opportunity to systematically assess the effects of substituents at silicon and carbon on the reactivity of the Si=C bond.

Effect of pedological characteristics on aqueous soil extraction recovery and tert-butyldimethylsilylation yield for gas chromatography-mass spectrometry of nerve gas hydrolysis products from soils.

Detection and identification of alkyl methylphosphonate (RMPA) and methylphosphonate (MPA) are performed to verify the existence of nerve gases by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) after tert-butyldimethylsilylation (TBDMS). However, it is sometimes difficult to detect RMPA and MPA in soils. This study examines the relationship between the pedological characteristics and the aqueous extraction recoveries and TBDMS derivatization yields of ethyl-, isopropyl- and pinacolyl methylphosphonate and MPA for 21 soil samples. The aqueous extraction recoveries were measured directly by capillary electrophoresis. Andosols showed low extraction recoveries, while Regosols and Fluvisols showed high recoveries. RMPA were extracted with higher recoveries than MPA from all soils. MPA could not be extracted from Andosols. Within the pedological characteristics, phosphate absorption coefficients showed a strong negative correlation with the extraction recoveries of all phosphonates. The levels of RMPA and MPA in aqueous soil extracts were also determined for eight soils by GC-MS after TBDMS. Compared to the aqueous extraction recoveries, the yields of TBDMS derivatives were low. Strong anion exchange led to a significant improvement in derivatization yields. The efficiencies of TBDMS derivatization were inversely correlated with the levels of alkaline earth metals extractable from soils when the three soils that possessed high total carbon were excluded.

Coordination-driven self-assembly of supramolecular cages: heteroatom-containing and complementary trigonal prisms.

The self-assembly of three nanoscopic prisms of approximate size 1 x 4 nm is reported. Tetrahedral carbon, silicon, and phosphorus were used as structure-defining elements in these coordination-based cages. A carbon-based assembly completes a pair of nanoscopic complementary 3-D structures. The formation of the structures is supported by multinuclear NMR, ESI FT-ICR mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis data.
