Floral variant of follicular lymphoma. Immunological and molecular studies support a neoplastic process.

In recent reports of the so-called "floral variant" of follicular lymphoma, an unusual variant of follicular lymphoma mimicking progressive transformation of germinal centers, questions have been raised regarding whether this process represents a malignant lymphoma. We studied 19 examples of the floral variant of follicular lymphoma and report our light microscopic, immunohistochemical, and molecular diagnostic findings. Morphologic changes consisted of effacement of normal lymph node architecture by follicles composed of atypical lymphocytes. The follicles were surrounded by prominent mantle zones that invaginated irregularly into the follicle centers, often imparting a "floral" appearance. Sufficient material was available for immunophenotypic or genotypic studies in 15 biopsies. Twelve of 15 cases studied by immunohistochemistry demonstrated phenotypes supporting a diagnosis of lymphoma. Five demonstrated light-chain restriction; one was an immunoglobulin-negative B-cell neoplasm; and six, in which only formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue was available, demonstrated overexpression of the bcl-2 protein. Southern blot analysis revealed evidence of clonal immunoglobulin heavy-chain gene rearrangement in all five cases tested. Overall, 12 of the 15 biopsies studied with these techniques showed immunologic or genotypic support for malignant lymphoma. The results of this study demonstrate that the floral variant of follicular lymphoma does indeed represent a malignant lymphoma.

[Anticomplementary activity of serums from subjects affected by neoplastic processes].

The Author studied the anticomplementary activity of 46 serums from patients affected by different tumours. The research has been positive on 49% of patients. Negative nearly constantly in mieloid and lymphatic leukemias. The highest percentage of activity was observed in the serums of patients affected by pulmonary cancers, histioleukemias and myelomas. Have been also studied the factors III-IV of the complement.

[Connection between the sector structural of the interplanetary magnetic field and hematologic indicators in normal and neoplastic processes].

Interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) sector polarity was compared to hematologic indexes of normal mice and mice after single injection of carcinogen 1,2-Dimethylhydrazine. It has been established that the hemoglobin level and the number of leucocytes in the standard blood volume depend on IMF sector polarity: both indexes are higher at +IMF, than at -IMF. Mice injected with carcinogen have mainly higher hemoglobin level at +IMF and mainly lower one at -IMF than the control mice.

[Cytometric analysis of neoplastic processes in the large intestine].

Examinations of macroscopically intact mucosa, of adenomas with various dysplasia degrees, and of adenocarcinoma have helped single out cytometric parameters and a number of morphologic characteristics describing the proliferation processes in the large intestine. Variability of the nuclear shape and size, the mitotic activity of the glandular epithelium, and the volumic fraction of proliferating DNA-synthesizing cells are characteristic of malignant processes.

[Indicators of general and local immunity in chronic and neoplastic processes in the head and neck areas].

Total and secretory immunity was investigated in healthy people, patients with chronic ENT pathologies, and patients with tumors of the oral cavity, larynx and laryngopharynx. It was found that chronic inflammation was followed by a decline of topical defence and a decrease of total immunity. In cancer patients these changes were aggravated. Topical immunity disorders included mainly secretory immunoglobulin A and were most pronounced in patients with tumors localized in the oral cavity.

[Influence of methylcobalamin and cyanocobalamin on the neoplastic process in rats].

The effect of methylcobalamine (5.6-dimethylbenzimidazolyl-Co-methylcobamide, CH3-B12) and cyanocobalamine (5,6-dimethylbenzimidazolyly-Co-cyanocobamide, CN-B12) on the growth of Walker's carcinosarcoma and longevity of white noninbred rats with implanted Zajdela ascites hepatoma was studied. The two agents exerted a similar effect. They 1) reduced the survival of rats with implanted Zajdela ascites hepatoma and Walker's carcinosarcoma; 2) did not increase the cell concentration in ascites; and 3) increased the total volume of ascites.

Comparative analysis of certain metals and tumor markers in bronchopulmonary cancer and colorectal cancers. Metals and tumor markers in the neoplastic process.

Carcinogenic metal levels in serum and tissue samples were measured in patients with bronchopulmonary or colorectal cancer. The cadmium and nickel tissue levels in the patients with lung cancer were significantly higher than in the controls. A statistical correlation was found between chromium and cadmium, as well as between cadmium and nickel in patients with colorectal cancer. In addition, prior to the operation, the tumor markers alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), carbohydrate antigen (Ca 19-9), polypeptide histidio antigen (TPA) and ferritin were analyzed. Their average concentrations were correlated with the existing concentrations of the metals. This was done for both types of cancer. Tumor marker detection showed an increase of CEA and TPA in patients with colorectal cancer. A statistical correlation was observed between AFP and zinc tumor tissue.
