The effect of environmental factors on elastomeric chain and nickel titanium coil springs.

It is well known that elastomers exhibit viscoelasticity and as such have their mechanical properties modified by temperature. Nickel titanium archwires are also affected by temperature and have been modified with specific temperature related properties for clinical use. What is less well known is the effect that other environmental factors, such as food, might have on the force delivery properties of both elastomeric materials and nickel titanium coil springs used for space closure. For instance gross colour change in elastomeric chain is a common clinical finding in patients who consume spiced foods. The aim of this work was to determine the effect three common environmental factors namely, water, Coke, and turmeric solution have on elastomeric chain and nickel titanium coil springs. In addition, it was decided to re-examine the effect of temperature at 10, 22, and 37 degrees C on both these space closing materials. Unlike many previous investigations, the test specimens were held at a constant stretch throughout the test period, including during their transfer to the Instron Universal Testing machine for force measurement. Six force measurements were made over the first hour, then at 24 hours and 7 days. A control group of dry specimens, maintained at 22 degrees C, had additional measurements made weekly for a 4-week period. The results indicated that elastomeric chain was affected by all the test environments while nickel titanium springs were only affected by temperature.

Anxiety sensitivity as a predictor of the development of panic symptoms, panic attacks, and panic disorder: a prospective study.

The purpose of the study was to examine how anxiety sensitivity (AS) acts as a dispositional factor in the development of panic symptoms, panic attacks, and panic disorder. Between 1986 and 1988, data were collected from 505 undergraduates at an urban university. At Time 1, measures used were the ASI to assess AS, the trait scale of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-T) to measure trait anxiety, and self-report questionnaires to measure personal and family history of panic and anxiety symptoms. During the Spring of 1999, 178 of these subjects were re-contacted, and information was gathered on subjects' subsequent development of panic symptoms, panic attacks, panic disorder, and trait anxiety (STAI-T). The ASI was the strongest predictor of the development of panic symptoms and panic attacks. After controlling for trait anxiety, the ASI was not predictive of the development of panic disorder.

Documenting freedom from disease and re-establishing a free status after a breakdown. Rabies.

Rabies reappeared in Finland in the spring of 1988 after a 29-year absence. This time rabies occurred in sylvatic form and the major species involved was the raccoon dog. During the outbreak 1988-89 66 animals were diagnosed rabid. Vaccination of cats, cattle and horses was strongly recommended and vaccination of dogs was compulsory in the outbreak area. A field trial was started on oral immunisation of raccoon dogs and foxes against rabies using baits containing rabies vaccine strain. The outbreak area and a wide buffer zone were baited three times. Finland was declared free of rabies again in 1991. Oral vaccination campaign with vaccine baits has been organised along the south-eastern border once a year since the beginning of 90s. Continuous surveillance and epidemiological screening is necessary to detect any new outbreaks of rabies at an early stage.

Feline distal aortic thromboembolism: a review of 44 cases (1990-1998).

The clinical case records of 44 cats with distal aortic thromboembolism were reviewed. These detailed 49 separate episodes of thromboembolism. Of the 44 cats, 33 (75%) were neutered males, and 43 (98%) were domestic shorthairs. The mean age was 8.7 years (age range 2-16 years). Evidence of pre-existing heart disease had been noted in 23% of cases. Heart failure was a concurrent diagnosis in 51% of episodes and 36% of these cases survived their thromboembolic episodes. Overall, cats survived 39% of the episodes. Cats died during 28% of the episodes, while 33% of the episodes resulted in the cats being euthanased. The median survival time was 6 months. Seventeen per cent of cats on prophylactic aspirin therapy experienced an episode of re-embolisation. Forty-three per cent of episodes occurred in the spring.

The effect of a combined approach to schistosomiasis control on the transmission of Schistosoma japonicum in Xingzi of Poyang Lake area, China.

The impact of a combined approach to schistosomiasis control from 1987 to 1989 and mass chemotherapy from 1992 to 1994 was studied in a rural community in Xingzi county in the northwest corner of Poyang Lake in Jiangxi Province, China. Humans, cattle, buffalo and pigs were known potential reservoirs of Schistosoma japonicum. Transmission occurs during water contact on and around seasonally flooded marshes that are used for grazing, the harvesting of grass and fishing. Humans and livestock underwent yearly selective mass chemotherapy, and snails were eliminated through ploughing and compacting of the marshland in the spring of 1988. Transmission was monitored through the determination of annual re-infection rates in samples of the human population, the annual examination of piles of feces from animals and humans in the marshland, the annual collection and examination of intermediate snail hosts, and the exposure to potentially polluted water and subsequent examination of sentinel mice. Schistosomiasis prevalence among humans and animals declined sharply as soon as mass chemotherapy was implemented. Snail density decreased even before mollusc control was started, possibly indicating a high variability of this indicator. The infection rates of snails and sentinel mice reached zero after a single application of mollusc control. The results underline the importance of single infected water buffalo for the transmission of schistosomiasis. Since the impact stopped for two years (1990-1991), the schistosomiasis prevalence rose quickly. Mass chemotherapy was an effective means to curb the prevalence of schistosomiasis in this area, but the effects were only maintained for one or two years in the marsh zone.

Progesterone downregulates progesterone receptor, but not estrogen receptor, in the estrogen-primed oviduct of a turtle (Trachemys scripta).

Progesterone downregulates nuclear progesterone receptor (Rp) and estrogen receptor (Re) in the estrogen-primed mammalian uterus and chick oviduct. We sought to determine if this downregulation mechanism is operative in the turtle oviduct. Female turtles were primed for 4 days with 17-beta-estradiol, after which progesterone (5 mg) was administered by injection every 24 h. Re and Rp levels in progesterone-treated and control turtle oviducts were measured by [3H]steroid-binding assays (pyridoxal 5' phosphate method) at 12, 24, 48 and 72 hr after initial progesterone treatment. Serum progesterone levels of progesterone-treated turtles increased only slightly from 0 hr (0.3 ng/ml) to 12 hr (0.6 ng/ml) after progesterone administration, increased considerably by 24 hr (5.3 ng/ml), and remained elevated (6-8 ng/ml) through 72 hr. Cytosol and nuclear Rp levels of estrogen-primed turtle oviducts showed distinct seasonal variation, with Rp levels higher in spring and summer months than in winter months. There was no seasonal variation in Re levels. Both cytosol and nuclear Rp responded to progesterone treatment. Cytosol Rp levels of progesterone-treated oviducts were significantly reduced below control levels by 12 hr after progesterone administration and remained low through 72 hr. Nuclear Rp levels of progesterone-treated oviducts showed no change at 12 hr, increased at 24 hr and then dropped at 48 and 72 hr. However, progesterone did not downregulate Re in the turtle oviduct.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Persistence and performance of esfenvalerate residues on broccoli.

The efficacy of esfenvalerate (84 g litre-1 EC; Asana XL) at 7.0 g AI ha-1 on broccoli was tested against the flea beetle, Phyllotreta cruciferae Goeze (Chrysomelidae: Coleoptera) and the imported cabbage worm, Pieris rapae L (Pieridae: Lepidoptera) under field conditions. Insect populations were monitored before and after treatment. Periodic sweep-net collections and examination of the leaves in treated and untreated broccoli plots revealed mean reductions of P cruciferae levels of nearly 98% 1 week post-application compared with untreated plots. The residual toxicity of esfenvalerate was also effective for 2 weeks in reducing population density of P rapae by 69% on broccoli leaves. The impact of esfenvalerate on feeding damage to broccoli leaves was established by counting the number of feeding holes made by P cruciferae on spring broccoli and P rapae on fall broccoli. As the leaf area ingested increased, a linear relationship was seen between the number of holes and number of insects. Results indicated that forage destruction by the two pests was significantly reduced by esfenvalerate application. Esfenvalerate was extracted from broccoli at 1 h and 1, 3, 7, 10, and 14 days post-application for residue analysis. Residues on spring broccoli were 12.2, 5.2 and 2.9 micrograms cm-2 on the leaves and 0.13, 0.05 and 0.02 microgram g-1 on the heads at 1 h, 1 and 3 days, respectively. Only trace levels (0.001 microgram g-1) were detected in/on the heads 14 days after spraying. On the basis of half-life (T1/2) values, persistence of esfenvalerate on spring broccoli leaves (T1/2 = 1 day) was shorter than on fall broccoli (T1/2 = 1.6 days). T1/2 values were 2.1 and 3.6 days on spring and fall broccoli heads, respectively. The implications of these residue levels on re-entry times into treated fields are discussed.

Genomic introgressions from wild relatives in the wheat genome alter meiotic dynamics in inter-varietal hybrids.

The use of wild relatives to introduce original diversity in the genome of bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is an interesting approach to face the challenges of sustainable agriculture and the impact of climate change on wheat production. However, the influence of these wild-species introgressions on meiosis in inter-varietal wheat hybrids remains poorly understood. We analyzed the French wheat variety Renan (Re) carrying Aegilops ventricosa (Aev)-derived 2AS/2NS and 7DL/7DvL introgressions, the reference cultivar Chinese Spring (CS), which lacks these introgressions, and their inter-varietal hybrid Chinese Spring × Renan (CSRe). This analysis combined cytogenetic approaches with the assessment of reproductive performance. Furthermore, we generated a cytological atlas of meiosis in wild tetraploid Aev, quantifying bivalent configurations and chiasma frequency. We observed a reduced pollen viability and a slight decrease in floret fertility in the hybrid CSRe. Exploration of the meiotic behavior showed that CSRe exhibited increased numbers of rod bivalents and univalents, leading to a reduced average chiasma number and frequent chromosome bridges and fragmentations, whereas the parental lines maintained stable chromosome pairing. These rearrangements indicate that homologous chromosome pairing and recombination are affected in CSRe. We applied introgression-specific oligo-Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization to localize alien segments in CSRe, providing a novel strategy to investigate the meiotic behavior of introgressed regions. The 2AS/2NS introgressed segments in CSRe were frequently located on rod bivalents or univalents, while 7DL/7DvL segments consistently formed ring bivalents. Our results provide a foundation for guiding alien gene introgression and for understanding the behavior of chromosomes with introgressions in the wheat genome.

[Dictyocaulus viviparus in Denmark. A survey of 15 years' diagnostic examination of faeces samples (author's transl)].

On the basis of routine diagnostic examinations of 12424 bovine faeces samples for larvae of Dictyocaulus viviparus, performed during the period 1963 through 1977, some calculations and reflections have been made on the incidence and epidemiology of lungworm infection in cattle in Denmark. It seems justified to conclude that dictyocaulosis is an important disease in heifers and cows as well as in calves. A distinct seasonal variation in the incidence of lungworm infection is apparent, in that more than 85% of the faeces samples were submitted within the period July through October. Lungworm larvae could be demonstrated in faeces samples from cattle during the winter and spring- This is considered to be of great importance with a view to re-establishment of the infection in the following grazing season. Overwintering of larvae on pastures seems possible. too, since patent infections among calves were demonstrated already in May and June. A comparison of meteorological data with totals of samples submitted and with relative numbers of positive samples seems to confirm, that both the level and the spread of lungworm infections are influenced by the amount of rainfall during the period June through August.

Regulation of frost resistance during cold de-acclimation and re-acclimation in oilseed rape. A possible role of PSII redox state.

A possible role of photosynthetic apparatus during cold de-acclimation was studied in oilseed rape (Brassica napus var. oleifera). Plants of spring (Star) and winter (Górczañski) cultivars were cold acclimated at + 5 degrees C, and de-acclimated during 4 weeks at combinations of + 12 and + 20 degrees C operating in the light or/and dark, with a 12-h photoperiod. Evidence is presented that the photosynthetic apparatus may be involved in temperature perception during de-acclimation. De-acclimation was faster under a 20/12 degrees C (day/night) treatment than under the reverse 12/20 degrees C (day/night). De-acclimation rate was constant when the day temperature was constant, irrespective of the night temperature both under cold day temperature regimes (12/20, 12/12 degrees C (day/night) and warm-day treatments (20/12, 20/20 degrees C (day/night). The fast decrease in frost resistance observed under warm-day de-acclimation was always accompanied by an acceleration of elongation growth. In the spring cultivar, elongation growth increased starting from the second week of de-acclimation, regardless of temperature conditions. Once elongation growth had commenced during de-acclimation, it continued throughout the period necessary for re-acclimation to low temperature. Re-acclimation to the initial freezing tolerance level was only possible when plant elongation was reduced. In addition re-acclimation of the photosynthetic apparatus to low temperature was impossible in fast growing plants. A possible relationship between PSII, growth rate and frost resistance during cold acclimation and de-acclimation is discussed.

[The effects of exposure to rare earth (NO3)3 on the immune function of mice off spring via milk].

OBJECTIVE: To study the changes of immune function in mice offspring whose mothers were exposed to Rare Earth (RE)(NO(3))(3). METHODS: RE(NO(3))(3) was administered to mother mice after giving birth by gavage at dosages of 2, 20 and 200 mg/kg bw during breast-feeding period. The weights of spleen and thymus, the spleen plaque forming cells (PFC), the delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) and the charcoal clearance of the offspring were determined. RESULTS: The results obtained from the offspring after weaning showed that the body weight of offspring treated with 200 mg/kg RE(NO(3))(3) was 18.8% lower than that of the control group; at the dosage of 2 mg/kg, the number of IgM-PFC was increased by 82.7%; and at the dosage of 20 mg/kg the rate of clearance and clearance index were significantly higher than that of the control group. No difference in DTH was found in any treated group as compared to the control group. The results of offspring at three weeks after weaning showed that the number of IgM-PFC of the 20 and 200 mg/kg bw dose groups were 47.0% and 44.7% lower than that of control group respectively; the rate of clearance and clearance index of the 200 mg/kg group were significantly lower than that of the control group. No significant changes in DTH were observed in each exposed group. CONCLUSION: RE(NO(3))(3) treatment affected the immune function of mice offspring which may caused by breast milk.

[Repair and revision 8. Relapse of lower incisors: retreatment?].

Research into the long-term stability of orthodontic treatment at the University of Nijmegen (the Netherlands) until 10 years after retention has shown that nearly 50% of the total relapse takes place the first two years after retention. After that period certain stability is reached except for the lower front teeth. Ten years after the retention phase their position is even worse than at the start of treatment. The changes in lower front teeth alignment are the result of relapse, but also of normal physiological changes during ageing of the dentition. Therefore it is questionable whether late mandibular incisor irregularity should be (re)treated. Relapse of mandibular incisor alignment shortly after debonding can be restored by tightly tying the rotated incisor(s) to the C-C bar with a steel ligature, by using a spring-retainer or by rebonding of brackets to the lower front teeth. After correction of the incisor position the C-C bar should be bonded to all lower front teeth. (Re)treatment of mandibular incisor irregularity at an older age asks for more complicated treatment mechanics.

Asthma trough to Parietaria in pediatrics.

We selected 183 patients with asthma, rhinitis and/or conjunctivitis. They responded positively to Parietaria Judaica skin prick-tests. In the first test 91 were positive. Of those 11 were monosensitive and 80 polysensitive. In the follow-up tests 92 were positive, of which 5 were monosensitive and 87 polysensitive. There were 54 cases of rhinitis, of which 23 developed asthma. Of 129 asthma cases, 90 developed asthma with rhinitis. The main seasons are Spring and Autumn and activity declines during winter. 18.57% are perennial. IgE was greater in the re-examination of the polysensitive cases. The monosensative cases confirmed the clinical symptoms most characteristic of rhinitis syndrome, 16.893% and asthma with rhinitis, 49.18%.

On the origin of the late-flowering ppd-H1 allele in barley.

To breed for climate resilient crops, an understanding of the genetic and environmental factors influencing adaptation is critical. Barley provides a model species to study adaptation to climate change. Here we present a detailed analysis of genetic variation at a major photoperiod response locus and relate this to the domestication history and dispersal of barley. The PPD-H1 locus (a PSEUDO-RESPONSE REGULATOR 7) promotes flowering under long-day conditions, and a natural mutation at this locus resulted in a recessive, late-flowering ppd-H1 allele. This mutation proved beneficial in high-latitude environments such as Northern Europe, where it allows extended vegetative growth during long spring days. We infer the origin of the mutated late-flowering ppd-H1 allele by re-sequencing a large geo-referenced collection of 942 Hordeum spontaneum, 5 Hordeum agriocrithon and 1110 domesticated (Hordeum vulgare) barleys. We demonstrate that the late-flowering phenotype originated from Desert-type wild barley in the Southern Levant and present evidence suggesting a post-domestication origin of the mutated ppd-H1 allele.

Thermoenergetics of pre-moulting and moulting kookaburras (Dacelo novaeguineae): they're laughing.

We examined the effect of temperature on resting metabolic rate in seven field-captured laughing kookaburras (Dacelo novaeguineae) during late winter and early spring. Basal metabolic rate averaged 201+/-3.4 ml O(2) h(-1) (0.603 ml O(2) g(-1) h(-1)). Overall thermal conductance (K(o)) declined with ambient temperature ( T(a)) and averaged 0.026 ml O(2) g(-1) h(-1) degrees C(-1) at T(a)s<10 degrees C. Day-night differences in body temperatures (2.6 degrees C) and in alpha-phase versus rho-phase minimum metabolic rates were much greater (33%) than predicted for 340-g nonpasserine birds and suggest that these animals operate as low-metabolic intensity animals in their rest phase, but normal-metabolic intensity animals during their active phase. Metabolic rate was measured in four of the same birds undergoing moult. Thermal conductance increased to 60% above pre-moult values about 6 weeks after moult began. Basal metabolic rate of moulting birds showing peak thermal conductance readings averaged 17 ml O(2) h(-1) higher than pre-moult measurements. Although this increase was not statistically significant, we believe the moult costs of kookaburras are too low to overcome the inherent variability of BMR determination. We suggest that moult costs of kookaburras are only somewhat higher than the measured costs of protein synthesis of other endotherms.

Analysis of a vertical compliance prosthetic foot.

Mechanical testing of the Re-Flex VSP Foot was conducted on the pylon alone and on the pylon and forefoot system. Values for spring and damping correspond well to values reported in the literature for spring and damping of physiological limbs. Pylon stiffness was 49.4 kN/m for a 600 N subject and 91.4 kN/m for an 800 N subject. The vertical stiffness of the pylon and forefoot together was 31.9 kN/m and 37.8 kN/m, respectively. Gait parameters of two persons with transtibial amputation who used vertically compliant feet for walking, jogging in place, and curb descent were investigated. Ground reaction forces, vertical trunk movement, event timing, and pylon compression were observed. The spring-loaded telescoping pylon was immobilized for half the trials. The trials were repeated the following week with the vertical compliance feature mobilized. Significant differences in vertical trunk motion and timing were found between the prosthetic limb and normal limb, as might be expected. Vertical compliance appeared to cause little change in gait parameters during normal walking. The largest differences appeared during the higher impact events such as fast walking and jogging in place.

[Accumulation of respiratory diseases among employees at a recently established refuse sorting plant].

An increasing number of plants for re-use of refuse have been constructed in Denmark in recent years. The Kaastrup Plant near Skive was opened in spring 1986. The plant accepts household rubbish and industrial refuse separately. The refuse is sorted by machine (industrial refuse is sorted partially manually) and in a large partially open machine plant, refuse is converted into fuel pellets. During a period of eight months, eight out of 15 employees developed respiratory symptoms. In seven, bronchial asthma was diagnosed and chronic bronchitis in one person. Four had initial symptoms of the organic dust toxic syndrome. After further six months, another case of occupationally-conditioned asthma occurred in the plant. Only two out of nine had previously had asthma or atopic disease. The investigation did not reveal any evidence of type-I allergy. Six out of nine had specific precipitating antibodies to refuse while all had negative RAST tests to this. In spring 1989, from six to eighteen months after the onset of the symptoms, six had still dyspnoea on exertion and three had positive histamine-provocation tests and seven out of nine had left the plant. Occupational medical measurements revealed dust concentrations of 8.1 mg/cubic millimeter in September 1986 and total germs of up to 3 x 10(9) cfu/cubic meter. Construction of the plant involved considerable contact with the refuse on account of the cleansing processes and open systems and it was reconstructed in the course of 1987/1988 so that the hygienic conditions are now acceptable.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
