[Health status indicators and the importance of their use in daily practice].

Health information undoubtedly has great social, political and economic importance. To have relevant information, it means to have basis for timely reporting, basis for action, and prerequisites for success. The purpose is to produce and use adequately appropriate information about health status, health risks and health outcomes in order to establish priorities. Health information should be useful and easy accessible to all potential users in every moment, from health care providers to the general public. Health indicators, as aggregated health statistical data, present measure instruments in this process, and because of that definition, development and implementation of basic set of health indicators at all levels (public health and clinic) must be the priority activity in the current moment of health sector reform in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Basic set of relevant and measurable indicators should be founded on different aspects of health and health care (health promotion, diseases prevention, clinical treatment, rehabilitation), monitoring and evaluation as a part of everyday's routine in health sector.

Validity of the Spanish surname infant mortality rate as a health status indicator for the Mexican American population.

This study assessed the validity of the Spanish surname infant mortality rate as an index of urban Mexican American health status. Neonatal, postneonatal, and risk-factor-specific mortality rates were computed from linked birth and infant death records of the 1974-75 Harris County, Texas, cohort of 68,584 for Spanish surname White, non-Spanish surname White, and Black single live births. Infants of Mexican-born immigrants were distinguished from those of other Spanish surname parents by parental nativity information on birth records. Infants of Mexican immigrants had paradoxically low mortality rates for high birth order, high maternal age, and delayed or absent prenatal care; only infants weighing less than 1500 gm showed expected high rates. Findings suggested loss of infant death data compatible with migration and under-registration of deaths. The Spanish surname infant mortality rate may be spuriously low and does not appear to be a valid indicator of Mexican American health status even in an urban, non-border area considered to have excellent birth and death registration.

[Health and nutritional status of 'alternatively' fed infants and young children, facts and uncertainties. I. Definitions and general health status indicators].

In this first article out of a series of two articles, a critical review of available scientific information on the nutritional consequences of alternative and especially vegan-type food habits in infants and preschool children is presented. This article involves definitions and information on general health indicators, such as the health of mothers during pregnancy and the growth and development of children. Some difficulties in interpreting available literature are also discussed. Many of the available case studies do not seem to be representative for population groups of infants and children fed alternative diets. Population studies mostly lack a control group and do not provide information on whether the sample is representative or not. Because of changing alternative food habits, some studies may be outdated. Alternatively fed toddlers six months to three years old, especially macrobiotics and veganists, seem to be somewhat smaller than their counterparts eating mixed diets, whereas there is some evidence of increased growth after the age of two years. The significance of these differences is not completely clear.
