Effect of the previously gravid uterine horn and postpartum interval on follicular diameter and conception rate in beef cows treated with estradiol benzoate and progesterone.

An experiment was performed to evaluate the effect of the side of ovulation with respect to the previously gravid uterine horn on fertility of cows inseminated at one of two periods postpartum. All cows were treated with an intravaginal progesterone insert for 7 d and received estradiol benzoate (2 mg, i.m.) at the time of device insertion, prostaglandin F2alpha (25 mg, i.m.) at the time of device removal, and estradiol benzoate (1 mg, i.m.) 30 h after device removal. All cows were inseminated 28 to 30 h after the second treatment with estradiol benzoate, regardless of observed estrus. Cows treated in Period 1 received inserts at 16 to 20 d postpartum and were inseminated at 25 to 29 d postpartum. Cows treated in Period 2 received inserts at 26 to 30 d postpartum and were inseminated at 35 to 39 d postpartum. Diameter of the largest follicle at insert removal was greater in cows treated in Period 2 (10.1 +/- 0.3; mm +/- SEM) than in cows treated in Period 1 (9.1 +/- 0.3; P < .05). Diameter did not differ with the side of ovulation in respect to the previously gravid uterine horn. Diameter was greater in cows 5 to 9 (10.3 +/- 0.3) than in cows 3 to 4 (9.0 +/- 0.3) or 10 to 13 (9.4 +/- 0.6) yr of age (P < .01). The proportion of cows that ovulated from the ovary contralateral to the previously gravid uterine horn was greater (P < .05) than of those that ovulated from the ipsilateral ovary, and the incidence of ovulation was reduced in cows 3 to 4 yr of age (P < .01). Conception rate tended to be greater for ovulation from the ipsilateral compared with the contralateral ovary, relative to the previously gravid uterine horn (P < .10) and for ovulation from the right than the left ovary (P < .06). Conception rate was less if cows ovulated a follicle that was < 9 mm than a follicle > or = 9 mm in diameter at insert removal (P < .01) and was greater in cows inseminated in June than in April or May (P < .05). In conclusion, in cows in which estrus was synchronized at 25 to 39 d postpartum, ovulation from either the ovary ipsilateral to the previously gravid uterine horn, or the right ovary, tended to increase fertility.

Mechanical reaction of the frontal abdominal wall to the impact load during gravidity.

THE AIM OF THE STUDY: Selected parameters of mechanical characteristics of the gravid abdomen under impact load. TYPE OF THE STUDY: Experimental biomechanical study carried out in a human in vivo. METHOD: Damped vibration of the gravid abdomen was detected after a defined impact load using speed cinematographic recording of 103 pictures/sec. A women in 32nd week of gestation, performing toe stand and fall down to the heel, the drop was 0.08 m. The recording was digitalized and the values mathematically analysed. The method used was PAM (polynomial approximation method) of approximation of discrete coordinates. The umbilikus' trajectory in reaction to the impact load was described analytically and interpreted graphically. Parameters of abdomen vibration were detected in horizontal profile by tensometric belt. Impact in interaction of soles with the underlay was detected with the help of tensometric platform Kistler. Ultimate strength point of myometrium was set by tearing experiment in 12 samples. RESULTS: Calculation of characteristics of damped, aperiodic vibration of hydro-viscous elastic system as the outside behaviour of the gravid abdomen. Parameters in vertical direction of umbilicus: impulse in abdominal area - 2,72 Ns, T-period - 0.1299 s, amplitude - 0,009 m, frequency - 7,7 Hz, functional damping - from -6 to +12 Nsm-1. In horizontal direction: frequency 5,4 Hz, damping 123 Nsm-1. Impact in soles' sphere 40 Ns with maximum value 1511 N, which represents level 2,2 G. Ultimate strength point of myometrium is 0,1 - 1,1 MPa. CONCLUSION: The results show one of the possible critical, risky frequencies of the gravid abdomen, that is, in this concrete case, the frequency of the vibrating system of cca 7,7 Hz in vertical direction and cca 5,4 Hz horizontally. This implies that e.g. this frequency is dangerous (possible abruptio placentae) and is necessary to be avoided e.g. when travelling by means of public transportation. The applied analytic methods and presented parameters will be used for e.g. modelling the examined gravid system under impact load of a general character--locomotion, work-load, car accidents, etc.

Evaluation of five trapping systems for the surveillance of gravid mosquitoes in Prince Georges County, Maryland.

Five mosquito trapping systems were evaluated in a large wildlife research center containing extensive and diverse mosquito-breeding habitat. The systems evaluated included Centers for Disease Control (CDC) New Standard Miniature Light traps with and without CO2 (dry ice), CDC gravid traps, partially open 1.8-m3 cages, and Fay-Prince traps baited with CO2. The first 4 trap systems were evaluated for 17 periods, while the Fay-Prince trap was evaluated on 5 trapping dates. Parameters recorded for each species were total catch, percent males, total females, and whether blood-fed/gravid. Fourteen of the 23 species caught yielded over 50 individuals in the 5 trapping systems (range of 71-2,524 specimens per species). Both light and CO2 were powerful attractants for 12 of the 14 commonly caught species. However, for most species, the majority of captured females were nongravid. Gravid traps caught fewer mosquitoes than did light- or CO2-baited traps, but the catch consisted of a higher percentage of gravid females. The open cages caught substantial numbers (>100 individuals) of 5 species, and for 2 species, this was the most productive trap. While light- and CO2-baited traps tended to catch few males or gravid females, the open cages caught an eclectic mixture of males, gravid females, and nongravid females, perhaps representative of the true percentages of each in nature.

Spontaneous abortions among factory workers. The importance of gravidity control.

The purpose of this study were twofold. First to demonstrate the impact of gravidity control on the crude odds ratio (OR), the risk estimate of the total number of spontaneous abortions among all chemically exposed women in comparison with non-exposed women. Second, to discuss whether the increased proportion of higher gravidities among the exposed subjects did compensate for an increased risk of spontaneous abortion provoked by the chemical exposure. The study included 262 factory workers occupationally exposed predominantly to organic solvents and 241 reference women who were socially comparable and relatively free from chemical exposure of their work. The subjects are included in a historical prospective survey of 6 730 women representing 12 selected occupations in the Danish county of Funen. The data were collected by postal questionnaires in May 1980. The crude OR of spontaneous abortions among factory workers was significantly increased, but when controlled for gravidity, it was no longer statistically significant. The childbearing behaviour of the two groups of women was compared in a logistic regression analysis which suggested that the increased proportion of higher gravidities among the factory workers was not only due to a compensatory behaviour. A desire for more children among the factory workers, or a less careful use of contraception compared to the reference group might explain the findings. Consequently, gravidity should probably be controlled.

[Diagnosis and clinical course of extra-uterine gravidity. Catamnestic survey of patients of gynaecological hospital of Jena University (author's transl)].

Reported in this paper are aspects relating to diagnosis and clinical course of 308 cases of extra-uterine gravidity, with reference being made to the authors' own experience and to comparable information in literature. The cases reviewed accounted for 0.86 per cent of all deliveries in the period considered. Tubal gravidity was diagnosed of 98 per cent of the cases and ovarian gravidity in 1.9 per cent, that is six cases. Concomitance of intra-uterine gravidity was established in two cases. The average age of the patients was relatively high, 29 years. Unambiguous correlations were established between the above courses, on the one hand, and parity as previous abortions or abdominal surgery, on the other. Four in 24 pregnancies of women with IUD were tubal pregnancies. Typical menstruation history was recordable from less than 50 per cent of the above patients. Early detection of unruptured tubal gravidity improved along with introduction of laparoscopy. Efforts have always been made to preserve fertility, whenever surgical treatment has been applied. There were no deaths.

Behaviors associated with egg and parasite deposition by gravid and Lambornella clarki-infected Aedes sierrensis.

Egg- and Lambornella clarki-deposition behaviors by the treehole mosquito Aedes sierrensis were monitored inside laboratory deposition containers using a video camera. Gravid and infected mosquitoes were seen probing the substrate and in the water with their abdominal tips. Both eggs and parasites were recovered from the containers. Gravid and infected mosquitoes performed the same or similar types of behaviors, but gravid mosquitoes spent significantly higher percentages of time engaged in exploratory probing movements than did infected mosquitoes. Gravid mosquitoes also spent significantly less percentage time resting and more percentage time grooming than did infected mosquitoes. It appears that, compared to gravid mosquitoes, infected mosquitoes spent less relative time in certain behaviors that may not benefit the parasite.

Horizontal transfer of the insect growth regulator pyriproxyfen to larval microcosms by gravid Aedes albopictus and Ochlerotatus triseriatus mosquitoes in the laboratory.

The insect growth regulator (IGR) pyriproxyfen is highly active against mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae). Through continuous emersion of large larvae (instars 3-4) the concentration causing 50% inhibition of adult emergence (EI50) was determined as 0.200 p.p.b. for Aedes albopictus (Skuse) and 3.5 to 7 times less for Ochlerotatus triseriatus (Say): IE50 0.0288 p.p.b. As a possible method of application to larval microcosms of these species that oviposit in water containers and phytotelmata, the horizontal transfer of pyriproxyfen to larval microcosms by adult mosquitoes was evaluated under laboratory conditions. Gravid females were forced to walk on surfaces treated with pyriproxyfen (tarsal contact exposure) and then allowed to oviposit in larval microcosms. Using replicate bioassay cages, each with an oviposition container, and a factorial experimental design, we assessed Ae. albopictus for the effects of (i) pyriproxyfen concentration (0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 mg/cm2) contacted by gravid females, and (ii) the number of treated gravid females added to bioassay cages (one, three or five females/cage), on the mortality of larvae in oviposition containers. Only 0.2 mg/cm2 treatment rate was tested on Oc. triseriatus. A significant (P < 0.05) curvilinear response in inhibition of emergence (IE) was achieved on both species. Densities of one or three treated Oc. triseriatus females/cage yielded IE rates of only 21-27%, whereas five treated females/cage resulted in 70% inhibition. With Ae. albopictus, densities of three or five treated females/cage yielded 48-67% and 59-73% IE, respectively, whereas one treated female/cage gave only 4-30% inhibition. Use of IGR-treated oviposition containers to achieve horizontal transfer of pyriproxyfen to mosquito oviposition sites could be a field management technique based on mosquito biology and behaviour. In binary choice tests with Ae. albopictus, horizontal transfer of pyriproxyfen from a container with a treated ovistrip (0.3 or 0.4 mg/cm2) to an untreated microcosm resulted in 14-38% inhibition. In larval bioassays, pyriproxyfen activity declined markedly within 10 days. Forcibly exposing gravid female mosquitoes to pyriproxyfen-treated paper surface did not affect their fecundity. However, from the 1st to 2nd gonotrophic cycles the egg hatch rate declined by 30% (P < 0.05). Some variation of results could be due to interactions between females at the oviposition site, possibly causing disproportionate transfer of pyriproxyfen to larval microcosms. Comparative studies of the oviposition behaviour of each mosquito are warranted and would potentially provide information needed to improve the technique.

[Intestinal absorption of zinc during gravidity and lactation (author's transl)].

In two experimental series the absorption of zinc was continuously studied during gravidity and lactation with Sprague-Dawley rats of the same age. The absorption was measured in vitro with isolated, everted intestinal sacs. During the first third of gravidity the absorption of zinc--based on the intestinal Zn transfer to the serosal solution and the Zn uptake into the intestinal wall--rose at first slightly, during the second third it continued to increase, whereas there was a highly significant increase during the last third of gravidity in comparison to nongravid, nonlactating control animals (P less than 0.001). Shortly before parturition the absorption already started to fall and continued to do so during lactation. Therefore, Zn absorption was higher only in the first days of lactation in comparison to the controls (P less than 0.05). Reasons were discussed for these changes in the absorption during gravidity and lactation.

Evaluation of urinary IL-1alpha and IL-1beta in gravid females and patients with bacterial cystitis and microscopic hematuria.

OBJECTIVES: to determine IL-1alpha and IL-1beta levels in patients with bacterial cystitis, microscopic hematuria, and gravid females relative to a control group of normal subjects. METHODS: enzyme immunoassays were used to measure concomitantly urinary IL-1alpha and IL-1beta in clean catch urine samples from normal subjects (n = 31) and study patients (n = 46). All normal subjects and patients underwent urinalysis, urine culture, and urine creatinine level determination. Since the IL-1alpha assay was developed for serum, the utility of the assay for urine specimens was unknown. The key parameters of urine collection, processing and sample storage for IL-1alpha were evaluated in detail. RESULTS: mean values +/- SEM (pg/mg) for IL-1alpha/ Cr and IL-1beta/Cr were control group (0.25 +/- 0.10 and 0.17 +/- 0.06), bacterial cystitis (9.97 +/- 1.15 and 42.45 +/- 1.86), and microscopic hematuria (2.81 +/- 0.65 and 2.82 +/- 0.70). Differences in cytokine levels between the control group and patients with either bacterial cystitis or microscopic hematuria were statistically significant for both IL-1alpha/Cr (P < 0.026; P < 0.007, respectively) and IL-1beta /Cr (P < 0.0004; P < 0.014, respectively). IL-1beta/Cr correlates better with pyuria than IL-1alpha/ Cr (P = 0.02 vs P = 0.44). In gravid females, only IL-1alpha was significantly elevated relative to non-pregnant females (IL-1beta elevation approached statistical significance). Gravid females with positive urine cultures could not be distinguished from those with negative cultures based on either interleukin (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Significant elevations of IL-1alpha and IL-1beta occur in patients with bacterial cystitis and microscopic hematuria. Correlation between pyuria and cytokine elevation was stronger for IL-1beta than for IL-1alpha. Changes in IL-1alpha may reflect changes in the bladder epithelium rather than in the inflammatory leukocytes. The ability of IL-1alpha and IL-1beta to serve as markers for bacterial cystitis in gravid females is diminished due to high basal levels during pregnancy.

Incarceration of the retroverted gravid uterus: the key to successful treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Incarceration of the retroverted gravid uterus is rare, and it is difficult to make a diagnosis, and, therefore, difficult to treat. We present two cases of incarceration of the retroverted gravid uterus. CASE REPORT: Two pregnant women presented with urinary retention at 14 weeks' gestation. We tried to push the gravid uterus upward, but in the end the two women underwent cesarean section. In one of the women it was possible to relieve incarceration of the retroverted gravid uterus. CONCLUSION: There was no sign of endometriosis in these pregnancies, which is important to evaluate when pregnant women have a complication.

Urinary excretion of 2,3-dinor-6-keto-PGF1 alpha and 11-dehydro-TXB2 by the gravid spontaneously hypertensive rat.

Little is known about the pathophysiological processes leading to superimposed preeclampsia. We present an animal model where the uteroplacental blood flow in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) was reduced by a silver clip. Thus, a superimposed preeclampsia-like syndrome could be studied under defined conditions. Urinary excretion of 2,3-dinor-6-keto PGF1 alpha and 11-dehydro-TxB2 were measured by enzyme immunoassays at day 16 and 20 of pregnancy. In gravid, sham-operated animals excretion of 2,3-dinor-6-keto-PGF1 alpha was largely elevated compared to non gravid control animals (day 16: 1259 vs. 258 ng/kg 24h; day 20: 471 vs. 269 ng/kg.24h). However, in the gravid rats with reduced uteroplacental blood flow urinary excretion of 2,3-dinor-6-keto-PGF1 alpha decreased to non gravid levels (day 16: 335 ng/kg.24h; day 20: 238 ng/kg.24h). By antihypertensive therapy with dihydralazin this effect was largely abolished. Only minor alterations were found in the excretion of 11-dehydro-TxB2. Our findings suggest, that a reduction of uteroplacental blood flow in the spontaneously hypertensive rat decreases the systemic prostacyclin synthesis.

Use of ultrasound in antenatal diagnosis of large-for-gestational age infants in diabetic gravid patients.

Near-term ultrasonograms of 44 diabetic gravid patients and 47 nondiabetic gravid patients were retrospectively analyzed. The mean values of abdominal diameter to femur length ratios and abdominal diameter to biparietal diameter ratios in diabetic gravid patients with large-for-gestational age fetuses were significantly different from those values in diabetic patients with appropriate-for-gestational age fetuses and in nondiabetic patients. Glycosylated hemoglobin values were above 7.4% (mean +/- 2 SD) in 79% of diabetic patients with large-for-gestational age infants and abdominal diameter to femur length ratio exceeding 1.385. Glycosylated hemoglobin values were less than or equal to 7.4% in 69% of diabetic gravid patients with appropriate-for-gestational age fetuses and abdominal diameter to femur length ratio less than 1.385. These findings suggest that large-for-gestational age infants have a different growth characteristic with a disproportionate enlargement of the abdomen. This possibly results from a long period of elevated levels of maternal plasma glucose (as shown by elevated values of glycosylated hemoglobin).

Uterine rupture during induced or augmented labor in gravid women with one prior cesarean delivery.

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to examine the risk of uterine rupture during induction or augmentation of labor in gravid women with 1 prior cesarean delivery. STUDY DESIGN: The medical records of all gravid women with history of cesarean delivery who attempted a trial of labor during a 12-year period at a single center were reviewed. The current analysis was limited to women at term with 1 prior cesarean delivery and no other deliveries. The rate of uterine rupture in gravid women within that group undergoing induction was compared with that in spontaneously laboring women. The association of oxytocin induction, oxytocin augmentation, and use of prostaglandin E(2) gel with uterine rupture was determined. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine these associations, with control for confounding factors. RESULTS: Of 2774 women in the analysis, 2214 had spontaneous onset of labor and 560 women had labor induced with oxytocin or prostaglandin E(2) gel. The overall rate of rupture among all patients with induction of labor was 2.3%, in comparison with 0.7% among women with spontaneous labor (P =.001). Among 1072 patients receiving oxytocin augmentation, the rate of uterine rupture was 1.0%, in comparison with 0.4% in nonaugmented, spontaneously laboring patients (P =.1). In a logistic regression model with control for birth weight, use of epidural, duration of labor, maternal age, year of delivery, and years since last birth, induction with oxytocin was associated with a 4.6-fold increased risk of uterine rupture compared with no oxytocin use (95% confidence interval, 1.5-14.1). In that model, augmentation with oxytocin was associated with an odds ratio of 2.3 (95% confidence interval, 0.8-7.0), and use of prostaglandin E(2) gel was associated with an odds ratio of 3.2 (95% confidence interval, 0.9-10.9). These differences were not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Induction of labor with oxytocin is associated with an increased rate of uterine rupture in gravid women with 1 prior uterine scar in comparison with the rate in spontaneously laboring women. Although the rate of uterine rupture was not statistically increased during oxytocin augmentation, use of oxytocin in such cases should proceed with caution.

The effects of prior gravidity on the outcomes of ovum donor and own oocyte cycles.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of prior gravidity on hormonal parameters, medication regimen, oocyte parameters, fertilization, and clinical pregnancy rates (PRs) in donor and own oocyte cycles. DESIGN: A retrospective study of 64 first-attempt ovum donor cycles and 102 first-attempt IVF and ZIFT cycles using own oocytes conducted during a 2.5-year time period. Analyses of covariance and t-tests using gravidity of oocyte source (gravida versus nulligravida) and controlling for sperm parameters were used to assess differences in hormonal, endometrial, medication, and demographic parameters and were performed separately for donor cycles and for own oocyte cycles. SETTING: Private fertility center. PATIENTS: In ovum donation cycles, oocyte parameters, medication administered, and hormonal parameters of 64 oocyte donors between the ages of 21 and 35, 34 of whom were never pregnant, i.e., nulligravida and 30 who had ever been pregnant, regardless of the outcome of that pregnancy, i.e., gravida, were studied. In own oocyte cycles, oocyte parameters, medication administered, and hormonal parameters of 102 women, 54 nulligravida and 48 gravida, between the ages of 23 and 44 were studied. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Medication requirements, hormonal response, seminal parameters, oocyte quality, fertilization, and clinical PRs. RESULTS: For patients using their own oocytes, there were no significant differences in any of the parameters studied. In contrast, compared with their nulligravida counterparts, gravida oocyte donors had fewer poor quality oocytes, had more high quality oocytes that fertilized, had a higher proportion of their oocytes fertilize, and had a higher PR per transfer. CONCLUSION: A prior history of gravidity is an important predictor of clinical pregnancy in donor oocyte cycles but not in cycles in which patients use their own oocytes. Oocyte recipients may wish to consider donor gravidity in selecting their donor.

Semiochemicals from ovaries of gravid females attract ovipositing female houseflies, Musca domestica.

Chemical signals originating from the ovaries of gravid females of Musca domestica (Diptera: Cyclorrhapha: Muscidae) attract ovipositing females to common egg-laying sites. Behavioral experiments indicated that females preferred to oviposit in fermented wheat bran containing ovaries from reproductively mature houseflies. Females preferred to oviposit in fermented wheat bran than wet wheat bran. This effect was additive with the attraction to housefly ovaries. Solvent extracts from housefly ovaries were attractive to gravid females. Extracts obtained with hexane were most attractive to gravid females for egg laying, and extracts obtained with ethyl acetate attracted more egg laying than extracts obtained by dichloromethane. Gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis showed that tricosane and (Z)-9-tricosene were the main components of the hexane extracts. Both tricosane and (Z)-9-tricosene were shown to elicit dose-dependent aggregation of gravid females in oviposition bioassays, but high doses of either chemical were not attractive.

FGL2 prothrombinase messenger RNA expression in gravid and nongravid human myometrium.

OBJECTIVE: Thrombin is a potent uterotonic agent that may play an important role in human parturition. FGL2 is a prothrombinase that cleaves prothrombin to thrombin. The purpose of this study was to determine FGL2 messenger RNA expression in human myometrium and to assess its relationship to the expression of EP3-6 prostaglandin receptor and inducible nitric oxide synthase. STUDY DESIGN: Myometrium was obtained from gravid women who underwent cesarean delivery (n = 19), from premenopausal (n = 10) and menopausal (n = 10) women who underwent hysterectomy, and from nonpregnant women who received 200 mg of misoprostol vaginally 12 hours before hysterectomy (n = 8). FGL2 messenger RNA expression was determined with the use of semiquantitative polymerase chain reaction and was compared with previously determined messenger RNA expression levels for EP3-6 and inducible nitric oxide synthase for the same samples. Statistical analysis was performed with the use of independent t test, Fisher exact test, analysis of variance, and linear regression, where appropriate. RESULTS: All samples that were analyzed contained demonstrable quantities of FGL2 messenger RNA. The highest FGL2 expression was found in gravid women, followed by women who were treated with misoprostol, by premenopausal nonpregnant women, and by menopausal women (P <.0001, analysis of variance). Significantly higher levels of FGL2 expression were found in the gravid women compared with the women who were treated with misoprostol (P <.001), the premenopausal nonpregnant women (P <.001), and the menopausal women (P <.0001). FGL2 messenger RNA expression correlated with EP3-6 and inducible nitric oxide synthase expression in all samples combined (r = 0.55, P <.0001; and r = 0.67, P <.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: The expression of FGL2 messenger RNA is increased in gravid myometrium compared with nonpregnant samples. Its expression significantly correlates to EP3-6 and inducible nitric oxide synthase expression. FGL2 prothrombinase expression may mediate the role of thrombin in human parturition.

The influence of secular effects and gravidity on the rate of ectopic pregnancy in a Norwegian population.

In order to assess the influence of secular effects and gravidity on the incidence rate of ectopic pregnancy, information from reproductive history questionnaires was obtained for 7804 gravid females identified through the Norwegian Twin Panel. The overall ectopic pregnancy incidence rate was 5.6 per 1000 estimated conceptions, with rates increasing for women born after 1950. Women experiencing their first pregnancy were at lowest risk for that pregnancy being ectopic. When women were stratified by whether they were born before or after 1950, gravidity still had an effect on the incidence rate of ectopic pregnancy. Conversely, year of birth was influential when stratifying by gravidity. The results obtained here suggest that the recent increase in the incidence of ectopic pregnancy is unrelated to the number of prior pregnancies.

Colonoscopic release of the incarcerated gravid uterus.

BACKGROUND: Incarceration of the gravid uterus occurs in the early second trimester in approximately one in 3000 pregnancies. If conventional manual attempts at restoring the uterine fundus to the anterior position are unsuccessful, correction by an invasive laparotomy procedure is necessary. We describe a minimally invasive technique to dislodge the incarcerated gravid uterus. TECHNIQUE: Gravid patients with an incarcerated uterus refractory to manual reduction are administered sedation, and one to two enemas. After sedation, manual reduction is attempted again. If unsuccessful, a colonoscope is passed above the level of the uterine fundus generating external anterior forces, which dislodge the uterus from beneath the sacral promontory. EXPERIENCE: The procedure was performed six times in five patients. One patient required a second procedure because of recurrence of the condition. All procedures were successful. No pregnancy losses occurred after the procedure, and no complications of colonoscopy were encountered. CONCLUSION: Colonoscopic release of the incarcerated gravid uterus is an option when attempts at manual reduction fail. This procedure may avoid laparotomy to correct this condition.
