Distribution of albatross remains in the Far East regions during the Holocene, based on zooarchaeological remains.

Many albatross remains have been found in the Japanese Islands and the surrounding areas, such as Sakhalin and South Korea. These remains are interesting for two reasons: numerous sites from which albatross remains have been found are located in coastal regions of the Far East where no albatrosses have been distributed recently, and there are some sites in which albatross remains represent a large portion of avian remains, although albatrosses are not easily preyed upon by human beings. We collected data on albatross remains from archaeological sites in the Far East regions during the Holocene and arranged the remains geographically, temporally and in terms of quantity. Based on these results, we showed that coastal areas along the Seas of Okhotsk and Japan have rarely been used by albatrosses in Modern times, though formerly there were many albatrosses. We proposed two explanations for the shrinkage of their distributional range: excessive hunting in the breeding areas, and distributional changes of prey for albatrosses.

A survey of regional analgesia and anaesthesia for obstetrics in selected countries in the Far East.

A survey was conducted in several countries in the Far East in an attempt to determine the practice of obstetric analgesia and anaesthesia there. Survey forms were sent to a total of 11 countries but in the end responses from only four countries were able to provide useful information. Responses from Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia covered between 44.9% (Singapore) and 24.6% (Malaysia) of their countries' total deliveries in 1997 and were thought to be adequate to give an impression of the obstetric analgesia and anaesthesia services in their respective countries, although this would not necessarily be completely accurate. From our survey, we found that the availability of regional analgesia for labour paralleled the economic status of the country and that a significant number of caesarean sections are conducted under regional anaesthesia, mainly spinals.

[Mathevolepis junlanae sp. n. (Cyclophyllidea: Hymenolepididae: Ditestolepidini), a new cestode species from shrews of Far East].

Mathevolepis junlanae sp. n. from shrews (Sorex spp.) of Far East is described given. The new species occupies an intermediate position between the Palaearctic species M. petrotschenkoi Spassky, 1948 (total number of proglottids--4) and M. skrjabini (Sadovskaya, 1965) (10-12 segments in a series) by the number of synchronously developing proglottids (2-4). The new species differs from M. larbi Karpenko, 1982 by the structure and measurements of copulative apparatus in proglottids. In M. larbi, vagina S-shaped, vagina length 0.147-0.154 mm, cirrus length 0.146-0.149 mm, and cirrus bursa reaching aporal excretory vessels. M. junlanae sp. n. has cirrus bursa slightly crossing center line of sexually mature proglottids, cirrus about half as long (0.084-0.092 mm), and smaller sac-shaped vagina (0.075-0.10 mm). The new species differs from the Nearctic representative M. macyi (Locker and Rausch, 1952) by lesser measurements of cirrus bursa (0.12-0.14 mm versus 0.4 mm) and a fewer number of proglottids in series (2-4 versus 5-7).

Childhood origins of depression: evidence from native and nonnative women in Alaska and the Russian Far East.

Explanations for depression usually implicate contemporaneous stressors, although biologic predispositions and childhood violence may also serve as precursors. This study evaluates the relative influence of contemporaneous stressors and both intrafamilial and interethnic violence experienced in childhood. Logistic regression is applied to data collected from a random sample of 355 women aged 20-89 in 1993 who lived in Chukotka and Kamchatka in the Russian Far East and in the Aleutians and the Northwest Alaskan Native Association region of Alaska. Although two contemporaneous stressors influence the likelihood of depression, intrafamilial violence experienced in childhood and, for natives of both Alaska and the Russian Far East, childhood emotional abuse by nonnatives exhibit dramatically more important effects that do not decay with time. These findings point to a violence-induced biologic mechanism for depression in adulthood. They also warrant interventions that extend their focus to the subtle forms of emotional violence that members of one ethnic group may inflict on another and to the social power relationships that may give these forms of violence a lifelong impact.

[Role of occupational factors in the incidence and course of respiratory system tuberculosis in fishery workers in the South Far East].

Tuberculosis morbidity among fishery workers in the South of Russian Far East remains high. Moreover, it is higher in fishermen working in the sea than in those who are engaged in fish-factories. This conclusion on fishing as a factor of tuberculosis risk was made basing on the results of 91 patients with tuberculosis of the respiratory organs. 65.9% of them were members of fishing ship's crew (group 1), 34.1% were workers of fish-factories (group 2). Pulmonary infiltrative tuberculosis running with exudation was typical for both groups, but group 1 subjects developed destruction of pulmonary tissue and discharged bacteria significantly more frequently. They had more compromised cellular immunity.

[Severe psychiatric disorders during trips to the Far East].

8 cases of acute mental disorders among Israelis travelling in the Far East are presented. The most common symptoms were hallucinations, paranoid delusions, agitation and depression. The important precipitating factors were drug abuse, reaction to the foreign environment and malarial prophylaxis. Treatment included creating a nonhostile environment, the presence of a Hebrew-speaking physician, psychopharmacotherapy and prompt evacuation to Israel. Most patients improved markedly and returned to normal functioning.

[Genetic variability and differentiation of populations of chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta (Walbaum) from the southern Russian Far East].

Allozyme variation of populations of chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta from southern Russian Far East was examined. Of 55 loci screened, 31 were polymorphic. Within-population variation accounted for most of the allele diversity; FST averaged over loci was 0.052. Linkage disequilibrium was found in less than 5% of locus pairs in the chum population examined. Analysis of within- and among-population variance components of linkage disequilibrium using D-statistics (Ohta, 1982) showed that most genetic variation was distributed among populations.

[Epidemiology, clinical aspects and prevention of borderline conditions in the regions of Siberia and Far East].

The problem of borderline conditions in the population of Siberia and the Far East is analyzed from the standpoint of a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach. The authors established the indicators, close to the real ones, of the prevalence of borderline disorders, exceeding many times the formal statistic data. Evidence is given of the role of certain personality parameters (rigidity, anxiety) and biological factors (the status of the immune and hormonal systems) in the formation and course of borderline conditions. The clinical studies carried out over time made it possible to specify definite stages in the development of borderline pathology. 3 stages were delineated: initial disorders or reactions; neurotic or neurosis-like conditions; neurotic or pathological developments of the personality. The authors demonstrate imperfection of the existing systems of psychiatric aid in respect to patients with borderline disorders and provide evidence for the necessity of organizing psychiatric services outside dispensary aid. Novel organizational models (the center for borderline conditions, the center for mental health care at industrial enterprises, municipal psychohygienic consultation) developed by the authors are provided as prognosis. These structures made it possible to enhance the efficacy of prevention and treatment of borderline conditions.

Environmental lead contamination in the Rudnaya Pristan--Dalnegorsk mining and smelter district, Russian far East.

A preliminary survey of a remote mining and smelting region of the Russian Far East (RFE) indicates significant soil lead contamination and a high probability of childhood lead poisoning. Lead concentrations in residential gardens (476-4310 mg/kg, Gmean=1626 mg/kg) and in roadside soils (2020-22900 mg/kg, Gmean=4420 mg/kg) exceed USEPA guidance for remediation. Preliminary biokinetic estimates of mean blood levels suggest that preschool children are at significant risk of lead poisoning from soil/dust ingestion with levels predicted to average 13-27 microg/dl. Samples of other pathways, such as air, water, paint, interior dust, and garden produce, and pediatric and occupational blood lead levels are needed. An assessment of the industry's ability to improve emissions controls and materials handling should also be undertaken. Global lessons in remediating contamination problems and preventing childhood lead poisoning must be applied in innovative ways to meet the logistical, social, and economic challenges in the RFE.

[Diphyllobothriasis in the Far East of the USSR].

The analysis of the literary data has shown that the population of the Far East is infected not with D. latum, as in other areas of the disease distribution, but with the Far Eastern tapeworm type D. klebanovskii. The final hosts of the parasite are the representatives of the Carnivora order, while the additional hosts are fish of Oncorhynchus and Salvelinus genera. Helminthiasis foci are localized in seaside biotopes on the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea. The remaining area of the disease distribution, including Maritime and Khabarovsk Territory, Sakhalin and Kamchatka regions and the sea water area were a zone to which D. klebanovskii is brought by Pacific Ocean salmon with pseudofoci of invasion.

Genetic diversity of hantaviruses associated with hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in the far east of Russia.

To identify the hantaviruses causing hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in the Far East of Russia, blood samples collected from HFRS patients in 1994-1998, were examined by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. In addition, 36 sera were tested by an immunofluorescence assay for antibodies against Hantaan, Seoul, Puumala, and Khabarovsk viruses, and 54 samples were tested by plaque reduction neutralization test. With both serological assays, the highest antibody titers were to Hantaan and/or Seoul viruses. Of 110 blood samples 36 were found RT-PCR positive. Phylogenetic analysis the sequences of a 256-nucleotide (nt) fragment of the hantavirus M genome segment revealed at least 3 genetically distinct hantavirus lineages. Nucleotide sequence comparison showed that two of the lineages, designated as FE and Amur (AMR), differed from one another by 15.9-21.2% and from Hantaan virus by 9.8-17.5%. The third lineage, VDV, differed from Seoul virus by 2.6-5.1%. All S segment sequences were from FE lineage, and differed from Hantaan virus by 10.7-12.6%. Thirty of the 36 (83%) analyzed sequences were found to be the FE genotype, which is very similar to that of Hantaan virus, strain 76-118. Of the remaining hantaviruses, 11% were the AMR genotype, and 6% the VDV genotype, which are genetically novel genotypes of Hantaan or Seoul viruses, respectively.

Betel nut: a common drug used by naturalized citizens from India, Far East Asia, and the South Pacific Islands.

Betel nut is a common masticatory drug used in Far East Asia, India, and the South Pacific. It is used daily by 600 million people worldwide, yet is unknown to most Western physicians. As the world becomes more culturally and ethnically interconnected, emergency physicians will encounter the use of betel nut. Significant illness can be associated with its use, including asthma exacerbation, cholinergic crisis, cardiac arrhythmias, acute psychosis, milk-alkali syndrome, and oropharyngeal tumors. We describe its source, pharmacology, composition, presentation, and treatment in the emergency department.

Comparison of vector competence for West Nile virus of colonized populations of Culex tritaeniorhynchus from southern Asia and the Far East.

Seven colonized stocks of Cx. tritaeniorhynchus from different geographic areas of Southern Asia and the Far East were assayed for susceptibility to WN virus infection by membrane feeding and by intrathoracic inoculation. Infected females also were tested for their ability to transmit virus to baby mice. No geographic pattern of differential susceptibility to WN virus infection was apparent from the experiments; however, the per os ID50 of one strain from Khulna, Bangladesh was over 10-fold greater than the ID50's of stocks from Karachi, Pakistan and Sendai, Japan. No difference in susceptibility was found by parenteral inoculation of virus. Likewise, greater than or equal to 90% of infected females from all the colonies were able to transmit virus.
