Pursuing performance. New specs for ambulances and fleet managers.

It seems so easy. A call comes in, you get in the ambulance, strap on the seatbelt and turn the key. But there's much more that goes into building the hunk of metal you're sitting in. Each part must meet a design or performance specification. But who sets up these specifications and why? Is it all geared to help you get your patient to the hospital quickly but safely? And what challenges await the maintenance person who must keep that hunk of metal running--and running well? This article will answer some of those questions, but we hope it prompts you to ask even more.

Facilitating networks of information.

In this paper we describe an approach to respond to a request for information with the identification and location of the appropriate person as a source of information for answering the question. The expertise of a person is characterized using a weighted profile that has been derived from a series of documents describing the expert's activities. Having these profiles, requests for information can be matched with these profiles. The best matches correspond with the people that are experts for providing information on the request.

Chemoprevention research: implications for primary care practice.

The field of cancer prevention research is entering a time of growth and opportunity. This important research is identifying agents that are making a substantial difference by reducing cancer incidence in high-risk populations. Primary care providers are natural partners for this research because of their diversity, commitment to disease prevention, and long-term access to their patient population. Several national chemoprevention trials in breast and prostate cancer are open and seeking to affiliate with primary care providers. Information is provided on this research effort, the development of chemoprevention trials, and how to learn more.
