Complement activation by dental implants.

Activation of complement leads to the generation of C3a and C5a inflammatory peptides. C5a is a potent chemotactic factor, stimulating the secretion of proteolytic enzymes by neutrophils and osteoclast activating factor/Interleukin-1 by monocytes. In vitro generation of C3a and C5a was measured by radioimmunoassay techniques. The results showed significant complement activation by all implants tested when compared to the control serum incubation. It is concluded that all of the implants studied activated the complement system and are not physiologically inert. Complement activation, therefore, may contribute either positively to healing or negatively to a poor outcome in osseoadaptation initially or over time.

Mechanism of adjuvant activity of dental plaque: in vitro activation of residual helper T-cell precursors in T-cell-deficient murine spleen cell cultures.

The immunoenhancing activity of a water-soluble extract of dental plaque (DP), which contains a mixture of microbial antigens, has been investigated. DP was tested for its capacity to augment the in vitro antibody-forming cell (AFC) response to sheep erythrocyte by adherent spleen cells from thymectomized, lethally irradiated, and bone marrow-transplanted (TxB) mice. Although DP was found to induce a small polyclonal AFC response, most of the increase in AFC induced by DP was antigen dependent. The latter enhancing effect is an indicator of the adjuvanticity of DP. This adjuvant activity of DP was T-cell-dependent, since removal of the residual prethymic and/or thymic-derived lymphocytes (T-cells) by anti-T-cell serum (anti-theta) and guinea pig complement abrogated the capacity of DP to augment the in vitro AFC response. This view was further supported by the synergistic restorative effect obtained by culturing anti-theta-treated adherent spleen cells with both DP and a population of unactivated T-cells that by themselves were unable to significantly enhance AFC responsiveness. Moreover, DP was found to be mitogenic for thymocytes. The cumulative results suggest that the adjuvant activity of DP is dependent on both the T- and B-cell-activating components present in DP.

A method for dental care activities time study using observer monitored counting of frequencies.

In dentistry, there is a need for better understanding of the distribution of the time spent on different activities at dental clinics. In order to investigate these resource aspects, both for the total time and for various categories of personnel and/or patients in dental clinics at the Public Dental Service (PD), Göteborg, Sweden, a time study method was used. The present study reports on the development of the PD's time study method (TSM) and analyses its functionality. The TSM, based on formulated criteria, used a method for an observer-monitored counting of frequencies. Specially trained observers registered the sampled observations for each professional, using a separate code list for each personnel group to which the professional belonged. The observer registered the on-going activity, not the duration of the procedure. Each observer followed several persons working in separated areas of the dental clinic. In 1989, the TSM was tested with the purpose of obtaining mean time values for dental care activities in the PD clinics performing general dental care. This study comprised all personnel categories in the clinic teams. Clinics were randomly selected and stratified according to the amount of dentistry for children in relation to the total time for dental care, reported as the parameter "dentist hours". Eight out of a total of 36 clinics were randomized, two from each strata.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The activity of dental caries in students of the Faculty of Dentistry, the study with the use of microbiological and biochemical tests (Dentocult SM).

The aim of the paper is to answer the question whether the Dentocult SM tests could be used to study dental caries activity in the 20-25 age group. 66 students of the Faculty of Dentistry, Medical University of Lublin, were included in the study. In all cases dental state was assessed by using average numbers of DMF and DMFs Ds. In the microbiological examinations a ready-made medium from Dentocult SM set was used. The results revealed that the risk of dental caries in the population studied cannot be determined only on the basis of Streptococcus mutans values.

Relation between the presence of supragingival calculus and protease activity in dental plaque.

Protease activity was measured in dental plaque collected from patients with or without supragingival calculus. Plaque specimens from the calculus group showed significantly greater protease activity in the presence of 0.05% sodium thioglycollate than did those from the non-calculus group. No significant difference between the two groups was observed in the protease activity without sodium thioglycollate. There was no significant correlation between the age of the patients and the protease activity.
