Living arrangements after divorce: cohabitation versus remarriage.

"The purpose of this paper is to examine the characteristics of all [U.S.] couple households in which one or both partners were previously married. In this examination, we will consider not only households maintained by married couples...; we will also consider households formed by cohabiting couples. In addition, we will examine the living arrangements of children in these households, with particular attention to whether children are from the current union or a previous union."

Extra-marital births occurring in cohabiting unions.

"Accompanying the rapid rise of unmarried cohabitation and the decline in nuptiality, Britain experienced a sharp increase in the number and proportion of births outside wedlock....84% of this recent increase corresponds to jointly registered births which can therefore be assumed to occur to informal couples. This chapter explores this new fertility trend using General Household Survey data for 1989, focusing on first births to single never-married cohabitants. The informality of cohabitation as a living arrangement and shortfalls in the data...are discussed....The chapter then attempts to provide some insights into the circumstances of the first birth, the timing of birth and marriage and the relative levels of fertility in the different unions."

Premarital cohabitation and postmarital cohabiting union formation.

"Previous research has indicated that premarital cohabitation decreases marital stability. This study examined the role of premarital cohabitation as a determinant of cohabitation after marital disruption. The author proposed that people who cohabited with their first spouse prior to marriage have a greater propensity to cohabit after marital disruption than people who did not cohabit before their first marriage. Event history analysis of the postmarital union experiences of women and men from the Canadian 1990 Family and Friends Survey (FFS) supports this proposition. It was found that the hazard rate of postmarital cohabitation was over 50% higher for premarital cohabitants than for noncohabitants."

From marriage to informal union: recent changes in the behaviour of French couples.

The author uses data from the 1986 Family History Survey conducted in France to examine patterns of entry into marriage and the range of informal unions that exist. "Since unmarried cohabitation is only recent for first unions, we shall confine our analysis to first unions and, for homogeneity, to those begun before the 30th birthday." She examines the effects of occupational status and social background on marriage decisions.

A survey of infertility, surgical sterility and associated reproductive disability in Perth, Western Australia.

Infertility, surgical sterility and associated reproductive disability were studied in a stratified cluster sample of 1,511 couples with women aged 16 to 44 years resident in metropolitan Perth in 1988. Sixteen couples were omitted from analysis because of missing data. The proportion of couples affected by current infertility was 3.5 per cent (53 of 1,495), and 67.9 per cent of these (36 of 53) had a reproductive disability, meaning that they were unable to achieve their desired level of reproductive function. Those affected by surgical sterility accounted for 37.1 per cent (555 of 1,495), and of these couples 2.0 per cent (11 of 555) had a reproductive disability. Empirically, the prevalence of both infertility and reproductive disability peaked at ages 30 to 34 years in the female partner. Of the factors studied, infertility was associated with surgery for a ruptured appendix, a history of pelvic inflammatory disease and number of sexual partners. In 10 of the 47 couples with reproductive disability, contraceptive sterilisation had been a cause of later regret. Most other cases were due to infertility. Almost one half of couples with reproductive disability had sought treatment. The affected couples had at least one child from the current union in 23 of the 47 cases of reproductive disability. The results support the need for development of a strategy to prevent infertility and other causes of reproductive disability.

[Diversity of couple relationships].

"This article focuses on differences between married women who cohabited prior to marriage, married women who did not cohabit prior to marriage, and cohabiting women. There are quite remarkable differences between these three groups: in opinions about primary relationships and separations, in motives for marrying, in behaviour (stability of union, labour force participation) and individual and couple-related characteristics (number of children, religion). These results come from the Netherlands Family and Fertility Survey 1993 conducted by Statistics Netherlands." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

Women's status and family planning in Haiti.

"The paper argues that women's status in Haiti is a factor favorable to the spread of modern contraception and a potential rapid demographic transition from high to low fertility. After briefly reviewing recent theories on the determining of fertility declines, the paper considers women's status in Haiti. It discusses family patterns, conjugal unions, and economic activities. Finally, it reviews current patterns of contraceptive use and considers how these are related to various aspects of women's status."
